First of all: a new Secret Life of Dolls cliffhanger, wherein Bella finally discovers the Sparklerosa, is thataway.

(Looking over my shoulder, my mother asked me to explain what was going on in the entry. She had to have most of the doll source material references explained, but she knew immediately why I had called it the Sparklerosa. Heh.)

So: I left the house twice this weekend, and it took two days for the piper to show up wanting payment: I have now come down with fluish symptoms (may not actually be flu). Basically, I hurt all over and I feel clammy-feverish, in addition to my general autumn snerfle-blarg and three or four nights of insomnia. And yet, I am leaving the house TOMORROW as well. YOU CAN'T HOLD ME DOWN! I DO WHAT I WANT!

Coughing all the way.

So... I ended up going to bed really early last night with a headful of snerf. Also, yesterday was apparently Everybody Being Bitches Day, and I was tired. Thus, you get a late yesterday/early today linkspam now.

Correction: Abdullah/Windfola was not an Arabian; he was a Trakehner, and a rather famous one at that.

Also, thank y'all for all the Findy Thoughts, because after my failed expedition to the farthest reaches of the attic, I went back to my closet and found The Thing I Need In Order to Write the Next Installment. It's going to be epic, I think.

Spent a nasty rainy day baking six dozen cookies for Mom's work lunch meeting tomorrow. Pretty nice, actually.

Also, that package that went missing? UPS Twitter Dude showed up (on Twitter, naturally) to ask if he could help (I guess they use Twitter search to find mentions of "UPS"?), which was great, and then our communication concluded with, my hand to God, "And by the way, your Twilight commentaries are absolutely brilliant. Good work." I could not stop laughing. Oh my God, I am STILL laughing. I mean, it's a lovely compliment, it's just--of all the things I ever expected a customer service professional to say to me? That was not one of them.

Re: This morning's Secret Life of Dolls: There was an alternate picture I didn't post that might explain what was going on in the photos a bit better--the second one was actually supposed to be The Littlest Edward complaining ("IT'S INDECENT!," etc.) from "my" perspective sitting there at my desk. Also, Serafina's pose was supposed to look like this, only I couldn't quite get her legs to cooperate, so it ended up looking like more of a pinup pose (not unfittingly). And in case you were wondering how inadequately clothed Eva Green!Serafina tended to look in the movie, here you are.

Meanwhile, my mother watched the Twilight DVD the other night--I've gotten through most of the extras--and asked if I could find her sheet music for "that song Edward Cullen plays on the piano." (She used to love playing the piano and wants to get back to it.) "I know it isn't really him playing it in the movie," she assured me for some reason. "No, it's him," I said (deciding to give her the benefit of the doubt that she didn't think that Actual Edward Cullen had somehow been magicked into existence for the purpose of filming a movie), "the actor's also a musician." "HE IS?" she cried. "I REALLY like him now!"

It's happened. I can't deny it anymore. She's a Twimom. I facepalmed.

Easily skippable Twilight stuff, since we're here )

Huzzah! My college roommate (Valkyrie) and her husband (Dr. Typo, for those of y'all who used to read the Daily Digest) had their baby today! Baby Typo is seven pounds or thereabouts and 21 inches long. Also, we all haunted Dr. Typo's Facebook this morning once word got out that they'd gone to the hospital--we sat there refreshing madly while he updated his status from his iPhone, and the Lovely Emily (my other college roommate) can't get Facebook at work, so I relayed all the news to her via email. Of course, he disappeared for long stretches of time, quite reasonably, as he needed to actually be with Valkyrie and not liveblog the whole thing. Ah, modernity.

(While we were waiting, Em and I discussed Breaking Dawn, which she had just read for the first time. Appropriate!)

So. I didn't get the quiet evening alone I wanted--I realized too late that the church music program my parents were going to (my stepfather plays drums) only lasted two hours; for some reason, I'd thought they'd be out a lot longer. And Lord knows you can't watch The Dark Knight in only two hours.* But the day itself went off quietly and without incident (particularly once I got Elizabeth settled in**), and I got a Lucky Brand locket bracelet that I love and a beautiful jewelry box (hand-pressed aluminum, made in India, I think? There's this store called Ambiance at the Riverchase Galleria, and it's pretty much full of nothing but stuff like that) that I'll have to take pictures of or something, because I can't really do it justice otherwise. Also, I caught my mother watching Casino Royale on cable OF HER OWN FREE WILL. VICTORY IS MINE!

* Can I just say that the DVD extras bite? As in, there aren't any? I mean, I got the two-disc thing and it was like, "Here's the six scenes in IMAX, except you're watching this on a TV so it kind of doesn't help, and here's Hans Zimmer talking about the music." Thanks...? I mean, I wasn't disappointed because I had already heard that the extras sucked and what I really wanted was the movie itself--the whole chase with the truck is so awesome it still makes me giggle--but I just wanted to officially register that complaint.

** I have to add that Elizabeth is the first doll I think I've ever gotten that looked better in person than in the picture. I seriously will have to borrow that camera again and do a little photoshoot.

And then today there was MOAR CHRISTMAS SHOPPING and then I sat down with my Dark Knight DVD and basically skipped around and watched all my favorite parts, which... really are the whole movie, I guess, but I felt like watching them out of order? And the truck part twice. I don't know.

(I did not, however, get werewolf cupcakes. This must be rectified next year.)

But for whatever reason, I'm really tired, so I just wanted to post a couple of things and catch up on the rest tomorrow, I guess: Read more... )

By the way, if you were working the upstairs register at the Brookwood Mall Books-a-Million on Wednesday night, and you sold a copy of Dead Until Dark to two women, the older of which kept saying "SHE WRITES ABOUT THE SHOW" really loudly over and over again, and the younger of which looked like she kind of wanted to die... Annotated "Dracula" on Wednesday; wrote as much on "The Day After Tomorrow" and "Hidalgo" as I could without the internet (which turned out to be surprisingly little, compared to the other parodies--only 50 notes or so each). Ended up taking Friday and Saturday off, because my eyes had started burning and a bit of the vertigo came back (congestion related to allergies, I think). Probably best not to get burnt out this early in the process. And then someone actually sent me the Webkinz black cat I was going to get for myself, which was a really nice surprise (hee!). So... basically, I'm going to pick another one to look forward to while I slog through, because I'm just that lame. Heh.

Also, I need to start drinking more often, because I had a glass of white merlot with dinner, and I'm a little woozy now. (Maybe I'm just not used to the feeling anymore, I don't know.) Maybe I will instate a quota of one (1) Woodchuck Amber per evening or something (I hate the taste of beer), because this is just sad. My favorite drink in college was Long Islands, y'all. And if nothing else, you'll have 100% more annotational entertainment as I attempt to work while toasted.

Oh, Jillian emailed me the other day--"The Extreme Makeover Home Edition show has announced email casting/nomination for Illinois and the more people to send in nominations for us the better." The entry with details at Christina's journal: "The TV show Extreme Makeover Home Edition is casting for the state of Illinois. We have sent in the application but I need the help of my friends and your friends if possible. I only have until May 7 to get as many letters to the producers to try to get our family chosen." She also describes what they need--why they'd like to get on the show.

Another entry from Erin (see previous entry), and it's not good this time. ETA: She's deleted and reposted something else.

Sweeney Todd: Can't stop listening to soundtrack, plz send help. The extras on the second disc are fairly decent, by the way. No commentary, but--have you ever heard a Tim Burton commentary? Forget a Depp and Burton commentary--the one on Sleepy Hollow was Mumbletown all the way. But there's a few good bits on the costumes (which, if you've spent any time on this journal, you will know is the really important thing), plus some recording studio footage on the first disc, and a number of tangentially related featurettes (Did you know? Victorian London kind of sucked if you were poor! Sweeney Todd may or may not have been a real person! There's a theater in San Francisco that still does Grand Guignol plays today, and OH GOD WAS THAT AN EYEBALL AUGH WTF).

Speaking of eyeballs (~augh~) AUGH )

Anyway. Well, here's a dumb question: who would be interested in an annotated Movies in Fifteen Minutes? Just, in pencil, in the margins of one of the hardcovers--a one-of-a-kind handwritten thing. (It has to be in pencil, because I can't write in the margins of a book with pen. I just can't. It's sacrilege.) I could also print out all the existing online 15Ms, as a separate auction, and annotate them by hand? It's kind of weird to propose this, though, because it sounds like I'm completely full of myself to even suggest it, but it's one of those things--if you need money, and you think there's the slightest chance anyone would want something, you'll toss any idea out there no matter how ridiculous it sounds. Thoughts?

ETA: Yes, I know, bookplates. I have a large pile of self-addressed stamped envelopes to send those out in, to people who requested them an embarrassingly long time ago; I was just never able to get one that looked the way I wanted, and again, it's been such an embarrassingly long time that I may just need to swallow my aesthetic pride and do something much simpler. Point being, I don't want to charge people for signed bookplates. I just... I can't explain it, I just feel like I shouldn't take money for that. A signed book, you know, at least you're paying for the book itself as well. I don't know. So yes, I still need to do the bookplate thing, but that's an issue separate from needing to raise money to pay taxes.

Still congested, tired and lightheaded, so am taking it easy on the journaling front, backlog be damned. Been trucking on with my Sherlock, however--these are the books I have (I'm in the middle of the first one), and this is the third book I'm going to get. I particularly want the annotated A Study in Scarlet in the third book, for reasons that... will someday be clear, let's put it that way. Also, my soul craves the complete 12-disc Granada series set, because my first introduction to the Sherlock Holmes stories was in eighth grade when we had to read The Hound of the Baskervilles, so my English teacher also had us watch some of the Granada episodes. So basically, Jeremy Brett is Sherlock Holmes to me, even though I've seen other versions; I always liked how he got Holmes' manic-depressive energy, the way Holmes would brood and then a case would turn up and it'd be all like THE GAME IS AFOOT! And Watson would be like, "Uh, no more cocaine for you today." And didn't Natasha Richardson randomly show up in "The Copper Beeches"? Good times.

Meanwhile: The latest LJ hoohah. I'm simply going to set this information out here and let you decide as you like: Boycotts! Blackmail! Shenanigans! )

Ugh. I'm getting really depressed--not so much moodwise as just functionally, physically depressed. I don't even want to leave the house looking and feeling like this, much less do anything. Like I said before, I think it's seasonally related. It just sucks. Fortunately I have a hair appointment on Monday, which I think should help at least a little bit.

So. TCM the other day. First off, I walked in on the last hour or so of Quo Vadis, which I think I taped about ten years ago and never got around to watching. This was clearly a terrible oversight on my part, as it involves Robert Taylor, who I really, really like (he has a very distinctive voice, I don't really know how to explain it. Also, hot as the sun, if a little needy, in Camille); a pre-King and I Deborah Kerr, Peter Ustinov camping it up while Rome burns, and lions eating Christians. Read more... )

So then I actually tried to get some work done, so I kept an eye on The Fall of the Roman Empire but didn't really get into it until about the last forty-five minutes, maybe. Read more... )
