I don't know why I woke up at 2 am, but I did, and I checked Twitter on my phone in bed and saw it: David Bowie passed away. So basically I'm posting my favorite stuff on Tumblr:

http://cleolinda.tumblr.com/tagged/david-bowie

Or I was, until something went buggy and YouTube refused to play nice anymore. Because my taste is odd (and movie-centric?), it's stuff from the '80s and the '90s-00s, rather than the early classic songs.

It's odd--I was shocked for several hours, didn't go back to bed until 5 am--but I'm having a hard time being sad. It's so wonderful to see everyone sharing their favorite things, to see the scope of someone's life all at once and how much it meant to people, knowing also that he went out the way he wanted with "a carefully planned finale." Sometimes it seems like someone is gone, yet more present than ever.

I'll open up comments for this entry--I just didn't have the spoons to deal with them before--but:

@THR: Christopher Lee, Legendary Movie Villain and Horror Icon, Dies at 93 http://thr.cm/VqKAV8

@cleolinda: LRT: I'm going back to bed.

@cleolinda: Raise your hand if you are actually surprised Christopher Lee didn't just scare Death off

Meanwhile: "Antipasto" recap is on the way, maybe tomorrow if things continue to go well. Things did not go well. I mean, I'm okay, but I was hit really hard by some PCOS issues this week, and life slowed to a naproxen-haze crawl. I feel really great about what I've gotten done, but it's taking WAY LONGER than I had hoped. And then, in a completely unrelated development, I'm having a major medication shake-up. So, you know. Persevere. That said, last week's livetweet Storify is pretty tight. "Primavera" is tonight, with the return of Will and more book material, so I'm resting up for that.

R.I.P. Ray Bradbury, Author of Fahrenheit 451 and The Martian Chronicles.

I have a lot of feelings about this, and I'm not even sure how to articulate all of them. I haven't read everything he's ever written; we had Fahrenheit 451 in high school, of course, but I liked Something Wicked This Way Comes a good bit more. I actually just reread The Martian Chronicles and Bradbury Stories last month (the latter isn't the Compleat Works of Ray Bradbury, but it's the biggest collection I've found). But when I was in high school, the school paid for a few interested students in my writing class to go to the Writing Today conference to see him speak. He did what I think was supposed to be a Q&A, but was mostly just him rambling on about anything he wanted for more than an hour, because that is a precious gift when you're Ray Bradbury; he was also the guest of honor at the luncheon, but I remember the morning session more clearly. Actually, since this was more than fifteen years ago, I only remember two specific things he said: Read more... )

Legendary sword master Bob Anderson dies.

It is reported that the sword-fighting trainer and choreographer passed away today, at the age of 89. Bob Anderson was a behind-the-scenes name little known to many fans but who had a tremendous impact not only on the “Lord of the Rings” trilogy, but on cinema itself. Anderson’s many credits include: Star Wars, Pirates of the Caribbean, Princess Bride, Highlander and much more. From thelordoftherings.net: “Bob Anderson, the world’s top sword master who has consulted on such films as Star Wars and trained the legendary Errol Flynn, was also brought in to train the actors in different fencing techniques. An expert in medieval arms, Anderson read the novel and then developed sparring methods based on Tolkien’s descriptions of each culture.”

For my money, his two greatest contributions as sword master and/or choreographer are in The Princess Bride and the first Pirates of the Caribbean. Maybe the massive three-act Battle of Amon Hen in Fellowship of the Ring as the third greatest, but for pure fencing swordsmanship and iconic fun, the first two. However, he actually was Darth Vader in a couple of the Star Wars movies:

Anderson also owns a claim to fame for being a swordfighting trainer for several films, as well as a stunt double for Darth Vader in Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back and Star Wars Episode VI: Return of the Jedi. He is one of seven people to have played that character. [...] Anderson did not receive much recognition for his role in the Star Wars films for years after their initial release, in part because David Prowse was so lauded for his portrayal that director George Lucas did not want to detract from the boost it gave the actor's career. In a 1983 interview, however, Mark Hamill paid homage to Anderson's contribution, saying, "Bob Anderson was the man who actually did Vader’s fighting. It was always supposed to be a secret, but I finally told George I didn’t think it was fair any more. Bob worked so bloody hard that he deserves some recognition. It’s ridiculous to preserve the myth that it’s all done by one man."

There is very little I love in movies--perhaps in life--more than a good sword fight. If anyone deserves an Oscar montage this year, it's Bob Anderson, and it would be the most entertaining thing in the whole show.

I'm not sure whether today is a good day or not to mention this, given that Elizabeth Taylor has passed away; this is either really heartwarming or really sad, depending on how you look at it. To update you guys on Sam... he's mostly blind now (cataracts). We've also realized that he's fairly deaf, although he can hear noises at a certain level; I suspect one ear is worse than the other, because he'll get confused and look in the wrong direction when he does hear something. He's also had a really bad spring allergy/sinus infection business that means he can't smell much, either. It's like Job's dog over here, I don't even know. I've been his seeing-eye human and primary nose-wiper, but the vet's given him an antihistamine, and now he can breathe and smell his way around a lot better. He's been more active and alert since he got it as well, which is like chasing a very fluffy toddler around, before he tries to climb over Shelby or gets stuck in another corner. But mostly, he curls up on his dog bed(s), with his blankets and/or beach towel, and just... smiles. That huffy, panting smile little dogs have, you know? He just sits there and, like... exists in a state of joy. I don't even know what to make of that.

More )I'm tired from attempting to sledgehammer out a functional draft of this chapter (which is good), so I don't really have a segue from this to anything else. So... "also, this."

@drgrist: Dude threw on scuba gear, jumped into a TSUNAMI, found his house & his wife, & saved her. I mean, damn.

I... I don't really have anything I can follow that up with.

Okay, more housekeeping.

The new layout: For those of you just joining us, the goal was to make the layout, particularly the comment posting boxes, more accessible to anyone with visual impairment. I threw "November Day" up here just to have something clean and legible for the Oscar liveblog, but... now I actually like it. I went through every single other layout LJ offers, tested more than a dozen of them full-size, and kept coming back to this one. In fact, I don't even think I want to go back to Component now; it looks cluttered and small in comparison. Problem: This layout does not have an option to change any of the colors. So we're staying with it in teal for this week, and then foresthouse and I are going to work on the CSS code over the weekend and shift all the hex codes to purple hues. I had a few people who said they liked the teal better (if it weren't an issue of persona, I'd actually be perfectly happy with it myself), but I also had people who were touchingly distraught at my non-purple existence. So we'll at least see what it looks like changed, live, so we can tweak it. Here's what a screencap of the current layout looks like with the hue shifted in Photoshop and lightened/desaturated a bit, both a warm purple and a cool purple:

POLL TIME )

On the upside, my parents are both down for the count with a third iteration of Death Blarg, but somehow, I have managed to dodge it this time. I am hoping that better health and weather will lead to an improved awesomosity forecast.

That said, we had a freak hailstorm yesterday:

I seem to have come down with a nasty stomach bug--the kind where you have those sporadic clutching pains--and so we're just going to put Secret Life off until Saturday. I'm in pain and surviving on toast and Coke at the moment, and it took me two hours to put this entry together. We'll make it through somehow.

Meanwhile, I don't think I'll be tweeting Varney the Vampire anymore. Some people loved it; others were annoyed. However, when I have more time, I might recap it properly (although quickly, because it gets incredibly paid-by-the-word repetitive).

I don't know when the new Made of Fail will be up, but [livejournal.com profile] queenanthai points out that it's nominated at podcastawards.com in the Cultural/Arts section.

Speaking of the new episode, Mark (who is on it) is now watching Firefly, reading The Hunger Games, and rereading Harry Potter.

Speaking of Harry Potter, there's a new Tonner Q&A up in which we are given hope for a Tonks doll. You put some changeable wigs on it, and I'll be all over that. Maybe. In a theoretical world where I have a money tree. Also: we're back to an affirmative on the Eowyn doll, which I at least want to see.

Also, briefly:

Veteran comic actor Leslie Nielsen, 84, has died in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.

Empire Strikes Back director Irvin Kershner dies in LA at 87.

James Franco and Anne Hathaway to host Oscars.

Ian McKellen is back on aboard The Hobbit, thank Eru.

New preview for HBO's "Game of Thrones."

And finally: The Spider-Man musical on Broadway--now in mishap-filled previews--is "one of the most face-meltingly insane live spectacles I've ever witnessed."

Oh, oh! I don't think I mentioned this earlier--Bill Condon decided to troll Twilight fandom with the first image from Breaking Dawn, to the general confusion of mainstream movie news sites. I have a horrible feeling that the bruises have been photoshopped out.

Many things! So many that I only culled the very best links for the spam, and it's still hugelong. Well, it's not that bad. JUST READ IT.

To begin: the new Made of Fail, "Self-Esteem is for Everybody," is up. I'm not on it (Scarlett is of Scarlettopia and the Spoony Experiment is, much to Dayna's twitterpation), but Dayna and I were talking a few days before, and she had me write down what I was saying so she could read it on air (about 28 minutes in), and it was: my advice to geek boys. My sad, hard-won, somewhat embittered advice. Alas, earwax.

Also, the Christopher Pike thing just got better. (Scroll down to "ETA again.") Not only is he now accusing caligirl_08 of being the one with an army of Amazon review sockpuppets, he's claiming that [community profile] bookfails is "a livejournal community sponsored by someone of Turkish background who has taken things much too far and is trying to rob fiction authors of their artistic license." Such artistic license includes claiming that the Aryans of India are the same as the "Nordic ideal" Aryans.

However: sad news as well.

Hollywood legend Tony Curtis dies at 85.

Bonnie and Clyde Director Arthur Penn Dies at 88.

'Marty,' 'Chinatown' actor Joe Mantell dies at 94.

First of all: in case you missed it, since I did post on a Saturday when everyone was out actually doing things, there is a new Secret Life of Dolls. And bless y'all for actually commenting on the "Explain what you like about Secret Life" entry; I didn't think you'd actually do it. I was hoping for maybe a couple of quotes I could use in the future, not 100+ comments. Bless. So I have now written the next four entries (you can see some of the titles here; two of them are just too spoilery to post), and I'll have to take pictures, but I hope we can get to #78 by Halloween, and since they're drafted, I don't see any reason why (OH GOD DON'T LET THE HOUSE BURN DOWN) we can't.

Meanwhile, I was extremely productive yesterday because my internet connection decided to hate me. Over and over and over again. As such, there was no linkspam. But a few key things happened, and I would like to mention them briefly and then catch other things later tonight or tomorrow: IT'S REALLY HAPPENING )

So. It is time to catch up.

First of all, I have taken Betsy (my previous computer, lost to the Compocalypse) to the Data Resurrectionist, and he says that the OS (which is pretending not to exist) isn't just the problem--some of the files are corrupted as well, perhaps 10% of them, but he'll retrieve what he can. God knows how much this will cost. Footnote-writing takes on a new urgency. I wanted to have the Vampires e-book out before Eclipse, but then, I also wanted it done before last Christmas. This is something else entirely.

Meanwhile, the asshole kids down the street (we are pretty certain) have now started tampering with my stepfather's tires, creeping up to our yard and cutting off one stem valve at a time (you know, where you pump air into the tire). It costs $30 to replace a stem--and that's if you notice it. That's if your tire has helpfully gone flat while your car is still in the driveway, which is not what happened last week--rather, my stepfather was out on the interstate when the tire gave up the ghost. He could have had a blowout, could have crashed, could have been seriously hurt. As it was, the tire had to be immediately replaced. For $300. Which we so totally could afford right now.

Yeah. The police have been called. And if you're reading this, assholes, this particular officer's mother used to work with my stepfather. They know each other. He's taking it seriously. So these four tire-slashing shenanigans have been documented by the cops. When you get caught, you're going down for all of them, and your asshole parents who won't rein you in--who deny that you threw bricks onto our patio and left a ladder to climb over our fence and rang our doorbell at all hours even though we saw you running back to their house--are paying for all of it. Yeah, YOU. I hope you're reading this and you DO recognize yourself and CUT IT THE FUCK OUT. I don't care if you're fourteen. Hope you enjoy juvenile detention.

So... um. Meanwhile!

Sam has gotten his summer cut!

Let us document Sam before he gets his summer cut this weekend on Twitpic Sam's had his summer cut! on Twitpic

Speaking of which, I think I must have tripped over the dogstacle course that is our house and hurt my right foot--maybe landed on my toes or the ball of my foot weirdly, or too hard--because it's been bothering me since two Wednesdays ago. Basically, since the funeral. And I've been limping a little. It doesn't feel like the bones are the problem--maybe I've pulled a muscle or a tendon? I don't know. It doesn't hurt very badly, but enough to be a pain in the ass. Well, figuratively.
