I'd been meaning to pull my tweets from the winter I had surprise spinal surgery; Twitter Advanced Search dredged them up for me with the organizational flair of a plate of scrambled eggs, so I've done my best to compile them logically. What really surprises me is that I don't remember being this upbeat about the whole experience. Or hallucinating about rhubarb, for that matter.

The winter of 2017-2018:

After not posting any #content for, uh, maybe two years, I suddenly got a wild hair on to rewatch the entire Star Wars series, since I hadn't seen the original trilogy in maybe fifteen years. I particularly wanted to watch them in story order--not Machete Order, mind you, although that is also a good idea--because I couldn't remember who knew what, when and why, and I particularly wanted to see Rogue One go straight into A New Hope.

Even when I haven't posted anywhere else, I've stayed active on Twitter. So I thought, let's livetweet it! That sounds fun! I'll put in a #sithmas tag so people can mute my blathering if they want! Two movies a day, that'll take four days! It... did not take four days. It took two weeks. Maybe three weeks? I'm still recovering from surgery and had to go more slowly than I expected. But I also kept pausing to discuss with people in my mentions, and ended up leaning into that more and more as we went on. So, within this ridiculous amount of tweeting, I also got information about the old EU books and the new canon books; I discuss what I saw on some of the DVD extras, what I remember of the OT from my childhood, Anakin/Padme Discourse, literary trope digressions, more and more callbacks/parallels as the movies progressed, and my love for the Galaxy of Heroes mobile game (HAVE U SEEN MY MURDER BEARS). So here are all the threads, each reformatted on single pages by the grace of Thread Reader, with all my typos and mistakes and enthusiasm. Enjoy.

Phantom Menace
I do not own a copy of this movie in disc format and decided to take that as a sign from the universe. In my defense, it's not in the Machete Order, either.

WOW I MEANT TO HAVE THIS UP SOONER

So! A lot of stuff this week!

I'm on A Matter of Taste again! And we talk about ALL THE THINGS: True Detective, Sleepy Hollow, my sad frustration with Dracula, and then, of course, an hour about Hannibal, through which we laugh our asses off and it was the best time. Although I'm kind of manic and going a mile a minute, sorry about that.

MANY STORIFY POSTS:

As many Hannibal promos as I could round up. WARNING: The two and a half minute version of the premiere's opening fight scene and some behind-the-scenes material is discussed at the end (by "discussed" I mean "everyone on Twitter going HOLY FUCKING SHIT").

Back on the 13 Hour Devour livetweet roundup, we've got the Hugh Dancy Q&A.

I thought I'd only need those two, but ended up having to split a ton of stuff off into a third post. By the time we're done, I may have a separate post for tonight's livetweeting, I don't even know. Included: the saga of the Podcast Avocado, a discussion of the use of red and light blue on the show, the Mysterious Package, and, most importantly, the Mads Mikkelsen Q&A on Twitter, which went hilariously off the rails after they logged him into the NBC Hannibal tumblr and showed him around. HE KNOWS.

MORE, so much more, and also MY LITTLE RAVENSTAG )

And finally, reminder: I'll be switching over to @cleolindajones to livetweet for the evening.

cleolinda: (dire ravenstag 04)
Okay, things are about to get hellaciously (hella?) busy the next couple of weeks, sooooo let me lay it all out:

Yesterday was the #13HourDevour Hannibal marathon--I broke down and got the Amazon Prime free trial for other reasons, and it turned out to be a pretty good way to stream the show and watch along, although a lot of folks were using their DVDs as well. I kept meaning to walk away at some point and do non-computer stuff, but... I ended up sitting there through the whole thing. The whole thirteen hours. I mean, I was multi-tasking, but... thirteen hours. I am no longer afraid of the Oscars next Sunday. My fingers are ready.

The way I did it, though, didn't so much involve finging as a lot of gathering and organizing--I didn't necessarily livetweet that much myself, except towards the end. But I really wanted to put a Storify post pulling a lot of different things together, and I wanted it done before I called it a night, rather than let it take over today as well. So we ended up with three posts total (with single-page versions as well). A sample:

As far as I can tell, it was wildly successful--various hashtags trended all day long, sometimes things that the producers didn't even come up with. Like, within minutes. The Hugh Dancy Q&A was in the second hour (see first post); various cast and crew wandered in throughout the whole day, with @NBCHannibal doing giveaways on the hour and at least one producer holding down the fort at any given time. I was just super interested in the whole process from a social-media perspective, because I don't think anyone's ever tried anything like this before, and it was fascinating to see it actually work. I'm sure it looks super obsessive on my part, but I just really enjoy experimenting with what you can do with this kind of thing.

I did set up a second Twitter account, though--@cleolindajones--to spare casual followers from massive livetweetage. So I'll probably be on that second account for the Oscars, Hannibal on Fridays, whenever I get to livetweet the second Game of Thrones book, Sleepy Hollow next year, and so on. Feel free to follow or unfollow that as necessary; I try to be vague anyway, but hopefully putting livetweets on a separate account will help people in different time zones and/or countries avoid spoilers until they want to see them.

So! I'm recording with the Matter of Taste guys again tomorrow night; we have the season 2 premiere on Friday (DOUBT NOT), the Oscars on Sunday night, and God knows when I'll have the first episode recap up considering all that plus the fact that the show's moved back a day and I don't have a "long weekend" time frame anymore. (Links to the season one recaps are worked into the marathon posts, but they're also listed here, if you want to revisit them fist.) Also I have another couple of writing deadlines, which is exciting, but clearly I'm going to have to bring my time-management A game to all this. Fortunately, spring is coming, which will help a lot.

ALSO I have started watching True Detective, which surprised me with the King in Yellow thing that none of y'all told me about, if you would like to discuss that here. I'm catching up on the latest episode sometime today, if/after I have been productive.

}:D

Okay, I have nearly posted this entry like four different times, then held back for some reason, then needed to update it again, and it's finally turned into this mulch pile of an entry that I keep turning over every couple of days. IT NEEDS TO BE POSTED.

So. Doing somewhat better. Blood pressure is still a little high but nearly normal, after an initial week of self-imposed semi-bed-rest. (I gave up on trying to answer the comments on the previous entry, but thanks for your good thoughts, guys.) The day after that med check that I mentioned, when hypertension came up as a possible cause of my constant headaches, I stayed in bed and the headaches vanished. I've only them on the few rainy days since (which is normal for me). It took a while, and I'm still having to keep a pretty sharp eye on it, but I don't think I'm going to have to go on medication for it. Honestly, I spent the whole week until the GP visit being really anxious, but rationally anxious, like, how bad off am I, exactly? So, scared and a little sad, even.

And now, I think I've gone into a manic upswing, which means that I'm calm and rational, sure, but I can't focus. I'm having a really hard time maintaining a coherent train of thought; my thoughts actively wander, if that makes any sense. Like, to the point where it's difficult to read, the way it's difficult to get through a really dry text at 11 pm when you're supposed to have read it for class the next day, you know? It's like a mental dizziness, not a physical one. I had good ideas on Saturday, then was super productive on Sunday, and then it just all fell apart on Monday. (I had such a good idea for the book on Sunday, almost something of a game-changer, that I'm concerned it's just the mania talking and I'm going to do all this work on it and then sit here next Monday and wonder what the hell I was thinking.) I know, too, that I'm more liable to be cranky or lose my temper when I'm manic, and... that's not good for my blood pressure. Like, maybe I just need to not talk to people, any of them, at all, until this passes. But I digress. Mostly I'm managing it with, like, lavender and lemongrass-based BPAL blends, chamomile tea, and a glass of wine at night. The combination of my actual antidepressants was so difficult--painful, even--to get to a comfortable balance that, if adding on simple things like tea and aromatherapy are enough to settle me down for the week or two I need it--well, screwing with that is not something I would do lightly.

Here. Have a corgi being vacuumed.

‏@AaronStarmer: I'm sorry but one sharknado doesn't prove global warming. You need a sustained pattern of shark and/or manatee related weather events.

@jellinfelon: At the end of the movie the sharknado sucks all the sharks back up and puts them back in the sea. Turns out they were only loan sharks

@cleolinda: I'm pretty sure he's got a whole Cannibal Martha Stewart thing going in the backyard, yeah.

@Ceilidhann: I would watch the Lecter version of Martha Stewart. Pretty table decorations & how to use up all your victims.

@NoelCT: Suddenly imagining Hannibal being a Martha Stewart fan and getting personal revenge when her show was cancelled last year.

@cleolinda: Not to mention the prison correspondence.

@cleolinda: These gifs express my feelings on the bittersweet ending of the Twilight movies.

@cleolinda: An hour early was not early enough. Line all the way through the building to the back door. Forgot one does not simply walk into Twilight.

@cleolinda: The line has now doubled all the way back around to the front. #sparkledammerung

@cleolinda: FRONT ROW RAILING SEAT ACHIEVED. ONLY MINOR CASUALTIES. IN TRENCHES WITH PRETEENS. #sparkledammerung

@osheamobile: RETURN WITH YOUR SCRAPBOOK OR ON IT

So I was actually planning to go see Skyfall with my mother Friday night (my grandmother had an unexpected surgery last week and we ended up not going last Friday), but then, on the spur of the moment, she decided that Skyfall was maybe too long for a 7:30 pm showing, so why don't we just go ahead and see Breaking Dawn, since it's only two hours, comes on half an hour earlier, and I have to write that thing anyway? Yeahhhhh the line was so long it went all the way to the back of the building, then snaked around and doubled back to the front. We happened to get there at six, when it was only at the back of the building still. My mother had never witnessed this kind of thing before (and this wasn't even a midnight showing, mind you), and immediately got Line Claustrophobic. Also, really pissed off at people breaking in and not respecting the lineness of the line. (I started telling her veteran war stories of the New Moon preview.)

Mild spoilers )

SHORT VERSION:

@christylemire: My review of the shockingly entertaining TWILIGHT finale. We are all Renesmee Cullen:

This is by far the best film in the series. This does not necessarily mean it's good. But as it reaches its prolonged and wildly violent crescendo, it's at least entertaining in a totally nutso way.
That's about the way of it, yeah. I also chimed in for Christy's article on the lead actors' future (@AP: For Twilight actors, transition from beloved film series with fervent fan base can be tricky). The horse I chose to back should come as no surprise.

I want to leave my own share of discussion at that, but we usually have spoilers in the comments, so why the hell not: go for it. I don't want to talk very much about the movie myself, since I need to save it for That Of Which We Do Not Speak, which we will speak of because we all know I'm writing it. I actually knocked out a fairly solid outline at 3 am Saturday morning. (Also, we'll be recording a Made of Fail episode on Tuesday.) Don't know how long it'll take to write, but these things always take at least a few days, and both my grandmother and my sister are really, really sick; I know my immune system well enough to know that, particularly after going out and being around people omg, I am probably going to get sick (again) myself. I'm proactively warding it off the best I can, but I'm just saying: build some wait time into your expectations here. I don't think it'll take six weeks like The Avengers did, but bear with me here a while. Go ye and catch up on the first four Twilight in Fifteen Minuteses while you wait.

Meanwhile, this is going to be the Help I Cannot Remember Specifics thread, for all my HELP I CANNOT REMEMBER SPECIFICS needs.

I want to be as vague as possible with the spoilers, but--responses to this movie seem so violently mixed that, when I had a sudden epiphany as the movie ended, I felt like people might go into it with different expectations if they approached it a particular way. For one thing, none of the Alien movies are anything like the others, if you think about it. I always thought Alien itself was kind of slow until I read that Ridley Scott thought of it as "a haunted house movie," and then I got it. Whereas Aliens is kind of a war movie, by contrast. (I think I've only seen #3 and #4 once each, when they originally came out; I can't really say what "secret" genre they might be.) I like that they're all different. I didn't want this to be a remake of Alien; I wanted to see the filmmakers think of yet another take on the story. In fact, there is a movie I really love, in a wildly different genre, that Prometheus reminded me of:

(Honestly, I've started wondering--as I've said before--if you can trigger manic moods. If nothing else, I think it suddenly being SUMMER IN THE MIDDLE OF MARCH gave me an overdose of natural light, and that may have caused it as well. As I recall, my most pronounced upswings are almost always in the spring and summer.) Otherwise, I'm outwardly calm, but as I've gotten older, I've been edging further and further into mild mania, and the happy creative bursts have been "evolving" into something less comfortable. The upside at the lower hypomanic end is that I feel happy and creative (verging on hypergraphic); at the high, verging-on-manic end, I feel overcaffeinated, impatient, and irritable, I have all these ideas but I can't concentrate or focus, I have a hard time sleeping, and I don't want to eat. I have a sample of BPAL's Safari blend, and a dab on the back of each hand (so I can smell it while I'm typing) seems to have centered me a bit. "Also already attached to the film are Hugh Jackman (as Jean Valjean), Helena Bonham Carter, Russell Crowe, and Sacha Baron Cohen," and director Tom Hooper wants to film them singing it live, rather than lip-syncing, and all I know about Les Mis is that all the theater kids were obsessed with it and Valjean like steals a loaf of bread or something so Javert chases him endlessly for umpteen thousand years because sometimes justice is not just, so if someone drops that reference I'll get it, and nothing else. Well, a friend of mine used to play "Master of the House" a lot. Wait, I think I remember Claire Danes in a huge bonnet. Okay, I'm reading the summary on Wikipedia now, and I'm getting "French uprising, not the Revolution like I thought; pretty girls suffer." So, what I'm saying is, I should have a blessedly uncomplicated movie experience, free of any previous stagings. Huzzah!

Meanwhile: LITTLE GIRL IN A CROCHETED YODA HAT FOR YOU TO BUY (the hat, not the girl) (I mean, I guess you can make an offer?).

I am tired. *flop*

I'm not going to say straight out that I'm going to try to post every single day this year, but I'd like to post more often. And some days, that may involve a single link, if that's all I can manage. We'll call it The Daily Something.

@thehairpin: So, When Exactly Is a Dubstep?

@cleolinda: I still have no idea what a/the/wtf dubstep is, except that people seem to use it as an insult, like "hipster." #getoffmylawn

@cleolinda: omg if Skream's remix of "In for the Kill" is dubstep and I have that, that means that THE DUBSTEP IS COMING FROM INSIDE THE HOUSE

SPEAKING OF SPARKLE EXPLOSIONS someone linked me to Nerd Lacquer nail polish on Etsy but only this afternoon did I comprehend that it is BASED IN ALABAMA? Just a glance at the color library indicates there are colors for--what, Star Wars, Star Trek, Doctor Who ("No, this product is not bigger on the inside"), Hitchhiker's Guide, Monty Python, Firefly, and--? Not sure what else. The next time I get to treat myself, I'll have to try a blue or something.
