Sorry--my sister came over (to wash clothes in preparation for her NYCC trip) and we were catching up and I'm desperately behind.

Today's scandal: Stephen King says ‘Twilight’ author ‘can't write.’ OH SNAP.

(And the wank is already delightful.)

Yesterday's scandal: A transcript of Christian Bale's meltdown; the surprisingly danceable remix; More Christian Bale Fun: McG Prophecies, Flip-Hop Remixes, and a Soundboard! Y'all, I hope that, someday, if I lose my shit at top volume for almost four minutes solid, and I happen to be miked, and a recording happens to leak, that the losing of my shit brings the internet as much joy as Christian Bale's has brought to us. God bless.

(In his defense: archnemesis Shane Hurlbut is "a pretty unrepentant light tweaker." This is my new favorite insult. Meanwhile: Gawker begs to differ. In conclusion: there's plenty of fail to go around!)

Today's Snack Deathmatch: Cadbury vs. Cadbury.

MOAR DOLLS: I just keep staring at the Serafina Pekkala prototype. SHE SO PRETTY. I'm still just so giddy that they're actually making her. And yes, that is a Sam Elliott Cowboy Grandpa doll listed beneath her.

(I like how the site has to specify, "This character does not wear shoes." So, you know, don't call up Tonner and bitch them out when she doesn't come with any.)

Meanwhile, I found out that 100 Edwards and Bellas will be sold at the Tonner NYCC booth in a couple of weeks. You know. Early. Before you can get them anywhere else. Of course, you'll have to bring your beatstick to ward off the other Twihards in order to reach the table, but still. I immediately started shrieking "NOOOO! NOOOOOOO!" because, while I know people who will be physically present at Comic-Con and could pick them up for me, I don't have the money yet because I haven't finished my stupid e-thing to sell (which is still assuming I'd have anything left after paying off the air conditioner, which I said I'd take care of). In fact, I have a children's picture book (just the text, obviously) that I need to find a publisher for. But, of course, did not think to do this ahead of time just in case Sparkle Motion should be present at NYCC. AUGH. Ah, well. There'll still be 1900 other dolls to cut TwiMoms for.

(Oh Lord: MTV Staffers Unbox The Magical Edward Cullen Doll. I'm not even going to look. I don't even want to know.)

So my mother got a letter Saturday morning informing her that she has won $125,000 in a "Canadian lottery," and here is a check for $5000 to take care of "Canadian taxes," but she will only have to send them $4800 of it back and then blah blah blah scam scam scam. Fortunately the first thing she did was 1) not believe it and the second thing she did was 2) call upon my Google-fu. The first thing I did was Google the name on the check, and the very first page of the very first site of the very first result said this: Read more... )

Number of times I walked Pete, who I was dogsitting: 6.

Number of things I got done today: ZERO.

It's amazing how not getting anything done can leave you so tired. Either that, or it's the fact that I was up all night with an upset stomach. (Oh, that.)

Hmm. Today's flashback omg help I am running out of entries: Let's go with the post I wrote on Melville's Pierre, a book so bad that critics at the time actually told him to stop writing. ("And then I find out that that's not even the incest the professor was talking about.")

All right: easily skippable Twi-spam. Most of it I wrote last night, which is why there's a difference in enthusiasm between this section and the one below. Again: being up all night sick will do that to you.

A few non-partisan stories about (American) voting: Massive voter roll purges being done in secret?; 5 Friends, a celeb-packed campaign to get people to register and vote; Vote for Change, where you can check your voter registration regardless of affiliation; Your Grievance For the Next Four Years: "Voter Fraud"; There's Nothing Some Fear More Than Citizens Exercising Their Constitutional Rights.

I'll tell you the truth, I'm to the point where I want to vomit if I so much as see the word election on a TV screen--I can't even find a channel that will report news on anything other than the election at this point, and it's been going on for more than a year now, and all they do is talk about the same superficial talking-head soundbite non-issues over and over again. And I make a point to rarely, if ever, mention politics here, because the parts of this journal that aren't personal are pop culture/entertainment blogging, and I like it that way. I like not having to moderate arguments and I like having a happy little quiet place where I don't have to hear about politics--not because I don't want to hear about politics ever, or because I don't want you to hear about them, but because I assume we're all getting our daily political FDA requirement elsewhere, at (the few?) blogs and websites and newspapers that actually know what they're talking about.

Anyway, my point is that I do care. I just don't want to care about it here, other than the occasional link or story that's about politics as it relates to entertainment, or politics as it relates to everyone regardless of party. Like voting. Because I do believe it's important, and you better believe that if someone tries to stop me from voting I will raise holy goddamn hell about it. And you should too.

Okay, our dishwasher is now on its last legs. I mean, it'll still turn on, but it's been so spotty for so long that we're obviously going to have to replace it in the next few months. Yes, we can get by washing dishes by hand. It's not so much that the dishwasher's dying as it is that this will be the eleventy-thousandth appliance to die this year. And Shelby's going to have to have surgery for her hip dysplasia in the next year or so, and we're still paying off the Unexpected Pension Taxes, and somewhere in there we've got to buy Tiny Tim a new crutch. The really stressful part is that my mother is now looking to me to finish my writing projects and hopefully bring in enough extra income that we can get on top of the bills and pay more than just a tiny bit, the interest, and sneaky late fees (everyone wants payment just before the last paycheck of the month) on them. You know. No pressure or anything.

And then my computer crashed in the middle of the "King Arthur in Fifteen Minutes" notes, and I lost all yesterday afternoon's work. "Document recovery" my ass. This is why you didn't get a linkspam, because I was too pissed busy trying to redo my work to deal with it.

(Also, Semagic came thisclose to eating all of tonight's linkspam when my computer crashed. "Load automatically saved draft" only pulled up the earliest version, until I finally thought to try "Load Draft" and see what came up.)

Via [livejournal.com profile] quitesometime, holy shit: Two Blog Entries You Should Be Reading. "Just when you're ready to break up with the Internet, forever, and take back the lingerie you bought it, you stumble on things that remind you that it's sort of good for something." I made a Time magazine blogger believe in the internet again, y'all. What have I done?

Speaking of the Breaking Dawn recap, I got bored and fished out some digital scrapbooking background samples (mostly from Scrapgirls, I think), skimmed over the Twilight recaps, and started making text icons. They would be fancier, except that my broke-ass copy of Photoshop 6.0 has decided it doesn't want to load 90% of my fonts. Please, if you have moar skillz or more cooperative software, feel free to make your own. (And please use icons with profanity judiciously, y'all.) POW!

I found an old post-it note on my floor this morning. I have no idea where it came from, and I'm not sure I've ever seen it before. There was only one word on it, in my own handwriting, and that word was... weavers.

Oh, and remember the Anne Taintor Calendar of Destiny? June's wedding-themed text turned out to be weirdly appropriate, because--I can't go into details because they're not really my details to share, but all kinds of divorce and engagement and relationship things happened to my real-world friends and family. So this month's text is, "The excitement never ends." I am terrified, y'all. It's like that Irish curse--"May your life be interesting."

Meanwhile, the medication adjustment (less Zoloft, more Lamictal, same Wellbutrin) is actually going okay. Interestingly enough, my first two days on the new mix have also been my first two days in a week or two without any headaches at all, and I feel a lot more cheerful. At the same time, I'm also really sleepy and snacky. So it's kind of weird. And possibly unrelated anyway.

I wasn't in a bad mood, exactly, but I haven't had the best day (tension headache, tension in my jaw, the realization that the premature grey/white hairs are spreading and not forming a Rogue streak). And then somewhere along the way, we had a sudden rainstorm and then I got into a much chattier mood, as evidenced by all the commentary below. Maybe it's the atmospheric pressure, I don't know.

I am horribly behind on things I have promised to post for people, so if I haven't done yours yet, it's... because I suck, basically.

From Fandom Lounge: "[livejournal.com profile] rachelmanija and [livejournal.com profile] lady_ganesh have created a fandom auction in support of marriage equality" over at [livejournal.com profile] livelongnmarry.

From [livejournal.com profile] amberkb: "As I'm sure you've seen on the TV, there's been massive flooding in the midwest. I live in Cedar Rapids... and I'm sure you've seen on the news that our town was really hard hit. I have up pictures from before and after up on my LJ. If you could post a little blurb asking people to donate to the Red Cross, that would be great. So many people's homes were destroyed, and businesses too." Another problem, I should add, is that so many crops were destroyed--which not only raises food prices in general, but kills this year's income for the farmers.

From [livejournal.com profile] lady_moriel: "[livejournal.com profile] counteragent's little sister-in-law, Jenny, is very sick. So. [livejournal.com profile] lizoraveriam linked to a few helpful programs, and you know what caused the most visible improvement? CCleaner. It got rid of a bunch of cruft left behind by uninstalled programs--I don't know if that solved the problem, as it also sounded very likely that the Charter software was buggy and possibly causing a memory leak, but I haven't been able to find evidence of the wifi itself taking/using up all that much space. So basically, I'm going to leave the computer on--I used to turn it off maybe every week or two, whether it needed it or not, but let it run otherwise. (Okay, answer this debate for me: better to turn the computer off daily or leave it on? I had been told it was better to leave it on, as the shutting down and rebooting was what used it up and "aged" it, or however you want to put it. That's why I'd been leaving it on, at any rate--I've done that with all my computers over the years, and they've all kept on trucking until an actual virus brought one down.) Anyway, after the wifi software was installed, it kept crashing or saying it didn't have enough quota, etc., etc., so I'd turn it off a couple of times a day this past week to try to prevent that. So what I'm saying now is I'm gonna let the computer run on wild and free until it crashes, if it crashes, to see if the quota problem has been resolved. Because, if nothing happens the rest of the week, we're obviously back to normal. And if it does crash, I have a couple of diagnostic programs I can look at now to see what the problem might be.

Meanwhile, back at the ranch, my grandmother is fine. Read more... )
