Does Science Fiction Speak to Our Condition More Than Fancy Literary Writing? I don't know, although I'm inclined to agree generally that books that are about people doing tangible things speak more to our condition than vague existential meebling about how hollow life in this modern, over-commercialized world is. I mean, ideally you have the tangible storylines, which may or may not include people having awesome adventures, and the existential depth.

Is it bad that I saw the headline about Anne Hathaway's boyfriend and immediately thought, "Wait, wait, when the hell did they clone Shakespeare and since when did he start running a charity?" I was genuinely indignant that I had somehow missed the dawn of mad science when I suddenly remembered (and not without a wave of disappointment) that they were actually referring to that Anne Hathaway, not Shakespeare's wife.

I thinking "speaking to our condition" works best with relatable characters, so that depends on a.) Whether the story is plot or character-driven, and b.) How good the writer is. The characters in Star Wars (plot/special effects driven) never felt like anything but cardboard to me, but the Firefly (character-driven) crew always felt like real people. I've never connected with any literary characters, but that's because every "literary" novel I've read came across as stuffy and pretentious. I think you can tell when the author is writing because they care for the characters (as opposed to trying to sound smart) and the former is better written and more enjoyable- and "speaks to our condition" because you can see yourself in the character. *shrug*

it may be too soon to clue him in that his potential future sister-in-law is a total weirdogeek

My sister and her now husband have been together since I was 14 (I'm 20 now) and I don't know if it was a good thing or not that he was around to witness my completely awkward teen years and refusal to outgrow the YA books and fictional worlds that interested me when I was in junior high. If anything I've become even geekier since they met. Maybe being around to see me grow up that way though is why he hasn't been surprised or weirded out that his 2 and a half year old son calls forks "dinglehoppers" and recognizes dragons and griffins alongside ducks and cows from time spent hanging out with me. I've held off on Harry Potter stuff up until now but teaching him "Lumos" and "Nox" when turning light switches on and off is becoming awfully tempting.

Even though she wasn't on EMI, I never would have thought in a million years that Tori Amos, of all people, would turn out to be the proverbial canary in the coal mine.
