So. I didn't get the quiet evening alone I wanted--I realized too late that the church music program my parents were going to (my stepfather plays drums) only lasted two hours; for some reason, I'd thought they'd be out a lot longer. And Lord knows you can't watch The Dark Knight in only two hours.* But the day itself went off quietly and without incident (particularly once I got Elizabeth settled in**), and I got a Lucky Brand locket bracelet that I love and a beautiful jewelry box (hand-pressed aluminum, made in India, I think? There's this store called Ambiance at the Riverchase Galleria, and it's pretty much full of nothing but stuff like that) that I'll have to take pictures of or something, because I can't really do it justice otherwise. Also, I caught my mother watching Casino Royale on cable OF HER OWN FREE WILL. VICTORY IS MINE!

* Can I just say that the DVD extras bite? As in, there aren't any? I mean, I got the two-disc thing and it was like, "Here's the six scenes in IMAX, except you're watching this on a TV so it kind of doesn't help, and here's Hans Zimmer talking about the music." Thanks...? I mean, I wasn't disappointed because I had already heard that the extras sucked and what I really wanted was the movie itself--the whole chase with the truck is so awesome it still makes me giggle--but I just wanted to officially register that complaint.

** I have to add that Elizabeth is the first doll I think I've ever gotten that looked better in person than in the picture. I seriously will have to borrow that camera again and do a little photoshoot.

And then today there was MOAR CHRISTMAS SHOPPING and then I sat down with my Dark Knight DVD and basically skipped around and watched all my favorite parts, which... really are the whole movie, I guess, but I felt like watching them out of order? And the truck part twice. I don't know.

(I did not, however, get werewolf cupcakes. This must be rectified next year.)

But for whatever reason, I'm really tired, so I just wanted to post a couple of things and catch up on the rest tomorrow, I guess:

I meant to post this days ago, but better late than never--an Overheard in New York link from [livejournal.com profile] dduane:
Conductor: Hello, and welcome to the Hogwarts Express. This is platform 9 3/4, and we will be leaving shortly for Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.

Preteen holding Harry Potter book, to suit holding Harry Potter book: Oh my god! I knew they would come for me!

Suit holding Harry Potter book, to himself: I did too.

Meanwhile:

'Wolverine' Trailer: See Wolvering & Friends Do Everything Imaginable; Breaking Down The New ‘X-Men Origins: Wolverine’ Trailer. I'm not sure what's going on with that first headline, but I feel like this movie should, in fact, involve a shitload of wolvering.

EXCLUSIVE: We Interview J.J. Abrams And Unveil A New ‘Star Trek’ Banner!

First 22 minutes of 'Watchmen' screened.

‘Blade’ Helmer Set for a Reinvention of ‘The Crow.’ Really? We need this? And I'm not even assuming that it's cursed from the get-go.

Rumor: Billy Zane's The Phantom is Getting a Sequel?! REALLY? WE NEED THIS?

Lucian Wolfs Out in New Underworld Pic; New 'Underworld: Rise of the Lycans' Poster.

Twilight sequel marches on: BEN BARNES FOR ARO? WHAT? I mean, I would totally be okay with more eye candy, since God knows I'm not there for fine cinema. It's just that I always imagined Aro as a low-rent Dumbledore type. Go back and read all his dialogue in a Dumbledore voice! YOU CANNOT UNSEE THE DUMBLEVAMP.

And shouldn't Barnes be off filming Dawn Treader somewhere? Somewhere very tanned? I have a bad feeling about this.

And finally, via [livejournal.com profile] snarkel: Celine Dion is amazing. No, SHE IS. WATCH IT.

Can I just say that the DVD extras bite?

they were a MAJOR letdown. I did appreciate the anatomy of chaos extra. I liked that one.

But there should've been much more, especially for a movie on that scale. Very little insight to its creation.

I kept wondering if they hadn't wanted to use any behind-the-scenes footage of Heath Ledger or do any kind of commentary where they'd have to talk about him. Christopher Nolan and the cast seem to have been very sensitive about/wary of exploiting his memory--maybe that was it?

That, or maybe Warner Bros. is planning a double dip in the future? I can't remember what the Batman Begins extras were like for comparison, though.

I have to say I was envisioning somebody older, and for some reason French-er, than Ben Barnes. Vincent Cassell maybe?

Oh my god that Celine Dion video was fantastic. And very, very convincing.

lol @ Celine Dion. She reminds me of every single person in my vocal seminar class in college: i.e. a bunch of crazy asses who made weird facial expressions and sounds to warm up. We had the same voice teacher and had to perform in front of each other once a week.

From: [identity profile] cleolinda.livejournal.com
Oh, I foresee myself watching it a lot more than twice, but that was all the time I had today. It's so crazy that they did the big truck flip with miniatures--the sound people must be amazing, because they really sold the weight of it as it turned over. And just the way the shot is framed, the truck lined up right down the center--man, I love that part. And obviously, everything before that as well, but... yeah. It really helps to show Batman being totally awesome and pwning the Joker through most of the sequence, because the rest of the movie, basically, is the Joker pwning everyone else. But the thing with the wires, and the street lamps, and the bike--! THEN THE TRUCK. Every time I see it, I'm still just like, "I CAN'T BELIEVE HE DID THAT."

Oh man, the Ben Barnes + Twilight is making my brain go boom. Like, the Utter Hotness of Ben combined with the sheer, terrible hilarity that is Twilight is coalescing into some kind of unstoppable force. It's reminding me inexplicably of George's World's Collide Theory in Seinfeld.

"If Lustful, Ogling Sarah walks through that door, she will kill Independent, Snarky Sarah! A Sarah divided against herself cannot stand!"

Also, I'm somehow jealous that you've somehow gotten so much more Christmas shopping done than me! Why must we have snoooooow! < /Bella>

Also also! Re: Amazing Truck-Flipping Action in Dark Knight: There will never be a time when that will not be awesome.

It still cracks me up that in the trailer for the movie it was just like, "And then a truck flips over." Somehow, it's really the sound effects and the directing/film editing leading up to it that make it so awesome--I'm always wary when people pull out the "IT IS PURE CINEMA" line, but it's so well done.

You know, I think its hilarious that they're considering Ben Barnes for Twilight. I was pulling for something like this all along. Maybe not for Aro, but I thought it would be hilarious if they put in Gaspard Ulliel or Henry Clay or one of those people as some random Volturi. "See? He's in the movie...but he's NOT edward!!" The funniest thing about the Dark Knight DVD was the total lack of hype on the cover. No "critically-acclaimed", no "biggest blockbuster of the year!!11one!" and no adoring review grabs from critics.

Basically just, "Here, have a short summary of the plot with the names of the actors in parentheses. We already know this is going to sell like the dickens, anyway, and nothing we say or do can stop it."

I think my jaw dropped in sheer wonder the first time I saw the truck flip, on the big screen. You're right, technically it's just part of a larger action scene, but there's something about it that really is so powerful and cinematic. I think that's my favorite bit of the movie for pure impact.

Date: 2008-12-16 05:40 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] cleolinda.livejournal.com
Yeah--I think the biggest evidence of that is the difference between seeing it in the trailer and actually watching it in the context of the movie itself. The buildup and the timing and the sound effects--these are people who know what they're doing.
