I'm making good time on "Takiawase"--it's just that "Hassun" ran (extra) late because of another project I had to do, so now this is also running late. At some point I'm going to get out from under the backlog, but today is not that day. However, some of y'all in the "Hassun" comments asked if we could have an open discussion thread for the episode currently airing, so: here we are. I'm going to have to be on Twitter to pitch in for the ratings and collect east and west coast tweets for the Storify, but LJ is definitely better for threaded conversations; I'll try to drop in between broadcasts. And if it turns out people are interested in a discussion post like this, we'll keep doing them. To state the obvious: there will be spoilers in the comments. Try to keep it to spoilers through this episode, though, in case people don't want to know about ~the future~ yet.

While we're here, we have two Aromaleigh colors this week:

I mean, all the colors will be there for a good long while, but these are the two newest. I haven't seen them in person yet, but they both have some color-shifting business going on--Lure is meant to be Abigail's multicolored sweater, and Murder Tie has to have some stealth red in it, of course--so it'll be an adventure trying to take pictures of them. Still working on the Tattler swatches--I've found a couple of lighter colors that blend well with it, so that it looks kind of like a sunset. But I'll get back to that after I'm done with "Takiawase."

By the way, here's the preview for tonight--and NBC Hannibal's Tumblr tags:

#Hannibal #NBC #Television #Previews #So last Friday was like the first JFC episode #This Friday is THE REAL GD DEAL #There's not even a part of the episode that we can call out to be ready for #IT'S JUST THE WHOLE THING

Buckle up.

New Made of Fail! In which DAYNA MEETS WIL WHEATON. I have a feeling my dogs will enjoy this one, probably because they will be the only ones able to hear it. (Happy birthday, [livejournal.com profile] queenanthai!)

New Tonner Doctor Who pictures! (Compare to the smaller picture still at the top of the page.) See, I told you that they get sneaky and update the pictures. I just... don't know that you're going to like them any better.

New book from Stephenie Meyer in June! Except that it's a 192-page novella about a character who was in Eclipse for 10 pages and no one cares about. Meanwhile, she said a long while back that she would never write anything similar for Carlisle (the original Cullen who was turned in the 1600s), because that would require research. On the upside, $1 from each copy will go to the Red Cross, or you can read it for free two days later with an option to donate directly. Due to the love-hate embrace these books and I are locked in (let's face it: Twilight-related page hits have been very good to me), I will probably recap it. (Speaking of Things I Have Recapped, apparently a great Twifan cry of "WHAT ABOUT MIDNIGHT SUN????!1?" went up on Twitter.)

Also, if you make an eyeshadow called Skin of a Killer, I WILL buy it. I will hate myself, but I will do it. FOR SCIENCE.

The Domestic Poster for Iron Man 2; Smell Like Tony Stark With Iron Man Cologne.

The whole concept cannot help but beg the question: What exactly does Tony Stark/Iron Man smell like? In our imagination, l'aroma de Stark involves the scent of crisp hundos, mixed with new car smell, motor oil, and Axe body spray. Which is to say masculine and slightly industrial, with just a splash of douchebag.

The original fragrance has been described as "leathery" and "woody" (tee hee) and the Diesel website calls it "a voluptuous and explosive cocktail that bears witness to a man with an identity as strong as it is present, almost magnetic," which sounds pretty much like what I just said.

Peoples of the internet! So I have read over your de-stressing suggestions--a lot of them were what I expected, but I was curious as to what people would recommend most often, and also the more unusual suggestions. (This is related, but I'll go ahead and ask up front where people will see it: does anyone have BPAL/TAL imps of Milk & Honey and/or Blinding Glory of Love they'd be willing to sell me? I kind of want to put off buying entire bottles at $25 each until I've tried them, and also, until I have the second e-book out.) So, I present to you some--not all, but some--of y'all's suggestions, with additions of my own where applicable:

Pleasantly busy day, it looks like. Howling winds outside, actually, but sunnyish, so that's fine.

Have to wrap presents later. I hate wrapping presents. I mean, I do an okay job of it in the end, and I like presents to be wrapped, but it usually involves me wrestling with a large, fragile sheet of shiny paper for about fifteen minutes.

Still have to take certain pictures. TLB went missing earlier this morning, but was eventually located. I would rather not discuss how the tableshelf ended up covered in maple syrup.

Lizzie's McAfee trial ran out, so I was like, the hell with this, I'm putting AVG on. So now I'm having to do all the scans and setups and whatever, but I hear it's better anyway.

(I am really glad it has a rootkit scan, because isn't that what Sony put on its CDs for a while there?)

For those of you keeping track on the Aromaleigh front, Wish is really pretty with Damask. It's a similar look to Chloe/Amelie, but more pink and less peach.

My feet are killing me, which suggests to me that I need new/better shoes, or some kind of comfort-inducing insert (although those "I'm Gellin'!" commercials make me want to slap someone). I actually want to go buy me some Chucks with my next round of book money, although I doubt those will have any kind of support. Hm. I just want some of those because I rarely get more formal than sneakers, but Chucks are an ever-so-slightly more sophisticated aesthetic than scuffed tennis shoes, you know? And you can customize them! I kind of want to make a purple plaid. I do not see any way to order a foot massage, however.

Very tired--like, "sleepy" tired, not "verge of a nervous breakdown" tired. Maybe it's just because there's been a lot of holiday-related running-around lately, which is fun. And I've been eating out more, which means I'm drinking soda, which means I'm getting more caffeine than I should, which means I'm not sleeping very well at night. All I know is, a friend called yesterday and thought something was seriously wrong, because I sounded completely out of it. I woke up a bit late and didn't take my meds on time this morning, so now I have a headache, etc., which I'm hoping will go away by the time I go out to the Christmas swap party tonight. Speaking of which, I am still trying to find my boots (just short black boots to wear under my jeans, nothing huge), because I would really like to wear those. Also, I have very nearly talked myself into wearing a dark blue top with crocheted sleeves that are a bit... princessy. Eh, I will claim they are "festive."

First, a few Avatar links, since that's what the last entry was about. And thanks for such a civil and thoughtful discussion over on the Avatar entry. Bear with me as I lead into this, because I have some philosophical ramblings about beauty products that guys (i.e., people who do not wear makeup and may not understand the appeal of cosmetics) may find interesting.

So. I have gift cards to Sephora, and also a promotional code from their newsletter that expires today, and then three free mini lip glosses as a birthday promotion, therefore: it's economy-boosting time. My on-and-off obsession with makeup, as previously documented here, is somewhat peculiar, given that I wear very little of it. I mean, number one: I don't leave the house much. I have sensitive problem skin, so there doesn't seem to be any point in irritating it with the constant application and removal of makeup that no one's going to see, you know? What I really love is trying out different colors, because if I wear anything, it tends to be eyeshadow and lip gloss--I really need to wear foundation and concealer, but honestly, when I do, all I look like is someone very obviously wearing foundation and concealer, so I figure the flawed natural look is preferable at that point, and I'll just have fun with my favorite eyeshadow palettes (Hard Candy's Suede and Star). Hence the recent fixation on Aromaleigh, because the samples are so cheap that I can play all I want, and I'm hearing from other patrons that their face powders do a really good job of blending and disappearing, so I'm going to get samples of those and see if I can finally achieve the no-makeup makeup look ("Like you, only better!").

As for why girls--some girls--get so obsessed with makeup, even someone like me who rarely wears it, I can tell you very simply: Yes, but it's a badass lavender )

YAYS, my Aromaleigh samples came in!

As previously mentioned, this is my (early) birthday present to myself. I got a ton of similar colors for the express purpose of trying them out side by side, to figure out which one(s) I like best--at $1 a sample, I figure I'm good for it. I have very deep-set eyes, so I can't wear terribly dark colors; I'm mostly looking at softer, lighter shades. After some deliberation, I have decided that I am neither a cool nor a warm, but rather a neutral, and I think I might actually try some of their foundation powders next. I've had better luck with Bare Escentuals (also a loose mineral makeup) than with other powder or liquid foundations, but it's still not quite as invisible-feeling as I'd like, and, again: one dollar per sample at Aromaleigh. Even an entire container would be cheaper than Bare Escentuals. It's worth trying.

(All of my heterosexual male readers just ran off to chug beer or headbutt each other like frightened deer or something.)

I think I'm down to Wish ("A peachy golden pink with slight iridescence") or Aurora ("A pinky-beige plush matte base scattered with tiny shimmers of blue and pink. Fit for a princess." I SEE WHAT YOU DID THERE) at this point. Hell, if I'm going to bed anyway, I might as well just do each eyelid a different color.

As for the three lipstick samples, I think I will start with Nuance, and then maybe the Rosewood blush.

(OH MY GOD SHE'S TALKING ABOUT BLUSH, RUN AWAY!)

Oh, and I still need to do photo tests of their three Twilight powders for you. FOR SCIENCE. After which I will probably break into a Twilight Merchandise Curse rash. (...What? How do you think I got The Littlest Edward to sparkle?) OH OH I HAVE MORE TWILIGHT CANDY TO TRY because I am fearless. And apparently suicidal.

I'm still getting used to Lizzie's touchpad mouse, but I think we can have a little more linkspam. GALADRIEL YAY )

Checking in

So. Trying to ease back into work--there are people in my life who don't think that what I do is terribly interesting or worthwhile, and even I admit that it's only recently that it's become a gainful employment once again. So I don't tend to recognize that it's possible to overwork myself, my dreams aside. But then you look back and realize that I put out an e-book and two Fifteen Minutes (HEY DID YOU HEAR ABOUT NEW MOON IN FIFTEEN MINUTES? BECAUSE THAT'S STILL THERE) in the space of about six weeks, and that's a lot of mental effort. I mean, narrative fiction is one thing--but humor can actually be kind of nerve-wracking, because (as I'm so fond of saying), it's either funny or it's not, and if you're any good at it, you know when it's not, and you just have to sit there sweating blood until you come up with something that is. Which is why I love a nice rambly entry or recap that just happens on a whim, because it's not me trying, and it doesn't involve breaking out into metaphorical hives. So my point, and I did have one, is that I'm having to recognize that maybe I am just a little bit burnt out right now. But the more time you take off from something, the harder it is to get back into it--think of how much you dread going back to work after several days off--so I spent yesterday setting up footnotes on New Moon, should something else in the house blow up and I find myself ever needing to do a third e-book. Just putting in the numbers and reminders to myself ("Talk about that news article for this one, here's the link"), which I also did last November for the Twilight 15M, and let me tell you, a year later, that really came in handy. So I did that to ease myself back into footnoting, so on and so forth.

I think one of the things I'm going to try to do is be a bit kinder to myself, in terms of work. What I really need to do, I think, is stop trying to create deadlines and expectations for myself--which sounds odd, but the thing is, the ones I create are stressful, self-defeating, and counterproductive. I think you do need discipline, but I need to live more in the present with it--put in the daily hours and work steadily and do my best, but not worry as to whether that "best" is good enough, and if I'm "on track" and set all these grand unattainable plans, because that does not produce results for me. In fact, it makes me kind of crazy, and the best things I've done in my life were, in fact, the things I did on a whim and with no expectations. That may not work for you, but it seems to work for me. So I'm going to try to live more with my best efforts in the present and stop trying to stress myself out about the future.

(I have a Zen Garden app on my phone that starts up with little sayings, and one of them was, "To a mind that is still, the whole universe surrenders." I think it's a little like that.)

Meanwhile, in other news, we're supposed to get snow tomorrow (YAY), and the dogs are deeply depressed because it's too cold for them to go out and play (I'll let them out after lunch, once it's warmed up a bit). Also, I think my birthday present to myself will be a whole mess of eyeshadow samples from Aromaleigh, since they're only $1 each anyway, last a good long time, and you can get as many as you want. (Aromaleigh: TLE approved.)

cleolinda: (why you do this)
Depression, I have often said, is like an influenza of the soul. A spiritual hamthrax, if you will. I has it. Do not want.

It's actually starting to worry me a little, the intensity of this go-round--it's not the usual stone-cold ennui. Normally I'm not this bad off until after New Year's (well, except for the pity party I throw myself every year in the weeks leading up to my birthday), and, again: that's more of a seasonal apathy-funk. This involves a lot of dread and distress and, at times, actual panic involved. I have to think this is because things are just generally bad around here at the moment, and have been for a good while now. Two different family members are having job-related crises, for example. I'm having performance anxiety in terms of trying to write, I don't have a dependable place to work, I'm just generally very unhappy. But it's taking on a hysterical edge that makes me uncomfortable--I keep having urges to act out in some way. I don't mean harm myself or anyone else; I mean, like, throw a gigantic melodramatic fit du shit. I know I had that minor meltdown where I started throwing shit earlier this summer, but that is the ONLY TIME IN MY LIFE I have ever done anything like that. So I'm not used to having the urge to, like, flounce from the internet for the hell of it or something. And that's why I'm sitting here talking about it so calmly, because I feel like the only way to combat irrationality is with detachment. Take an overview of the thing, recognize what you're doing, shove it into the light of day. So... yeah.

(By the way, laptop has been ordered; money has cleared checking account. It will take about two weeks from November 3rd for Dell to build and ship it, what with the custom art and the crazy-ass 17" facial recognition screen. I don't even know. I spent a ridiculous, extravagant amount of money because I could, and it felt GOOD.)

Been having a really hard time the last few days. Don't even really want to talk about it, although suffice it to say that it's not just me feeling pitiful, it's me actually trying not to get sucked into a number of different people's dramaz and not entirely succeeding. I'm trying to space the entries several days apart, but if The Secret Life of Dolls seems to move at a brisk pace over the next week or so, it's because I find working on that to be both comforting and distracting.

1) House rules: Don't fight on my journal. Don't. Disagree, discuss, that's great. But you will be civil and non-snippy to me and each other on my own journal. Take it somewhere else if you can't.

2) My stepfather decided to buzzcut the Angry Jasmine again. The jasmine then got so much angrier, in fact, that it disgorged a swarm of yellowjackets that stung him upside the head several times. I'm not even making this up.

3) Yesterday, I opened the front door to take Scout outside on his leash, and there's a dead bird toes up on the doorstep. A fairly large bird, too--you know, the size of a pigeon, rather than a sparrow. We have no idea what it was doing there, because it was under the little porch overhang fairly close to the door, so it couldn't have just fallen out of the sky or something.

First off: Happy holidays if you celebrate them!

Secondly: I just wanted to reassure people that lurking is totally okay. I know that for a lot of "personal" journals, lurking can be kind of creepy, but I really think of this as sort of a hybrid journal/media blog, and I generally don't post anything I wouldn't want repeated (very much keeping the "open universe" concept in mind). So linking to an entry here is okay, and quietly reading without saying anything is completely fine. Based on my site stats, the majority of people don't say anything, in fact. (And since I have anonymous commenting turned off for the sake of my own sanity, I imagine that a number of them can't.) I like chatting with people when I can, but you're not under any pressure or obligation, and I don't think it's weird if you stay in read-only mode.

Thirdly: Since I was discussing the imminent release of the NECA Bella figure in the comments, and a few people raised concerns that having a Bella around would suck, let me ask you this: would you have believed me if I'd told you two months ago that you would love The Littlest Edward? (I mean, not all of you do, I guess, but he's pretty popular now.) Keep in mind how crazy Bella drives me in the books. And that I know y'all are concerned about this. And that I know that reenacting Twilight unironically would be super lame besides, I don't have a truck or bad vampires. And also, that TLE still has My Little Ponies to take care of. And also-also, that Anna still hates him. I'm just saying, there's lots of places we could go with The Littlest Bella, and even I haven't decided what all they could be. So, you know. No worries.

And we haven't even opened The Package yet, and no matter who's in there (uh. Creepy choice of words, sorry), it will obviously affect the entire Shelf. But I promise you, we have gotten through everything we need to get through--or we will have, after the conclusion to yesterday's cliffhanger, which I might be able to post tonight, I don't know. Depending on how long it takes me to write, we could have The Reveal by Monday or Tuesday.

Fourthly (are we on four now?): I got a couple of related-to-doll stories recs. From [livejournal.com profile] melayka, [livejournal.com profile] abe_kroenen, a multi-fandom Hellboy-centered photo comic (hey, is that an Elrond?), and--help, I've lost the comment! Who recommended Kimono's Townhouse, the one with the My Little Ponies? ETA: It was [livejournal.com profile] dakiwiboid, thanks!

Fifthly, the doll food in the previous entry was from Pancake Meow, although the milk was real, and if you look closely, you'll see two tiny doll "aspirin" (it's the little touches that mean so much).

Sixthly, the Aromaleigh samples really are very becoming.

FYI

Once again, I am having trouble with my internet connection. If I don't show up for the Oscar live-blogging, show up late, or disappear in the middle of it, that will be why. And I'm telling you now because... obviously, I will have no way of telling you when it happens.

Now, ABC's schedule for tonight (all times Central Standard), as far as I can tell, is the Barbara Walters Special at 6 pm ("Academy Award nominees Anne Hathaway and Mickey Rourke, 2009 Academy Awards host Hugh Jackman and the Jonas Brothers are the guests on Barbara Walters 28th annual Oscar-night interview show"), the red carpet at 7 pm (is Tim Gunn hosting this? He's involved somewhere in some capacity?), and the show itself at 7:30. No one has any idea how long the show will run, although it has optimistically been scheduled to end at 10 pm and will probably end before 10:30, given how hellbent the producers are to cut time.

(I'm sure there will be red carpet shenanigans on E! for hours before anyone even shows up, but quite frankly, my mother and my aunt are having a belated birthday lunch today, and also, I'm probably going to end up liveblogging for at least four hours straight, so I really don't care. You can watch Seacrest desperately try to sneak up on Brangelina, but I'm good, thanks.)

(Oscar show secrets! The stage is gonna look like a nightclub! The awards will be presented "as a narrative" [wha?]! "And at least some of the presenters who'd been lined up have backed out, emboldened by the anonymity they were afforded by the producers." O SNAP.)

Meanwhile, as a follow-up to last night's cosmetic musings, I discovered that the pictures on the actual Urban Decay site are a lot closer to the eyeshadow as it appeared in the store samples. I really want to try Asphyxia, X, Shotgun, Kiss, Shattered and Edward Stalker now.

Oh, and I got an email to the effect that the Twilight Tonners are available to ship. I don't have $250 to blow right now, though (and if I didn't get the Bella, you know we'd never hear the end of it), so Serafina Pekkadoll's going to be my priority because SERAFINA OMG, and if the Twilights sell out or fall into the clutches of the asshat resellers, of which I am one, well, that's the way the vampire sparkles. Or something.

ETA, 7:08 pm: Okay, I'm not going to hit post until the ABC red carpet's over, but I am here and getting down to business.

Nnnngh. Still tired, mostly from running around all day doing errands. I mean, it's a good tired, but it's on top of the sneezing and the chills, so that's not so good. See, the value of actually going to a Sephora, instead of just ordering online, is that all the color swatches look great on the website, but then you go to the store and everything looks totally different. Not even bad-different, just... in the store, you get a better idea of what you'll actually be putting on. (And of course, there's all kinds of highlighters and luminizers and concealers and liners and it's like, look, what does this actually do? And you try it on the back of your hand because ew public sample germs and you're like... oh. That. Yeah. Well. I'm not spending $30 on that today, thanks.)

And now we're all standing over my hand )

OSCARS CRISIS! Hollywood Frustrations And Fears Over Sunday's Awards; Stars And Advertisers Give Show Cold Shoulder:
For weeks now, they've been begging myself and the other journalists who cover the Oscars not to trash the planning and performances for this year's telecast like we have in years past. Because their frustration and fear is that, if Sunday's top-to-bottom reworked show can't bring back viewers after 2008's sunk to its lowest ratings ever, then nothing will. And the worst part is that not even Hollywood wants to participate in the Oscars anymore.
And then, among discussion of the desperate measures taken to spice up the show, there's this:
One new idea thought up by the producers that will be seen Sunday? Trophy boys. The result is that very handsome young men will now join very beautiful young women on stage carrying out the Oscar statuettes. If that's not an acknowledgement that the viewership for the Academy Awards these days is limited to only females and gays, I don't know what is.

Long day, low blood sugar--tomorrow is Sister Girl's birthday (I told you December is a busy month chez Jones)--so the linkspam is somewhat compact. 'Cause I'm tired.
