So. Trying to ease back into work--there are people in my life who don't think that what I do is terribly interesting or worthwhile, and even I admit that it's only recently that it's become a gainful employment once again. So I don't tend to recognize that it's possible to overwork myself, my dreams aside. But then you look back and realize that I put out an e-book and two Fifteen Minutes (HEY DID YOU HEAR ABOUT NEW MOON IN FIFTEEN MINUTES? BECAUSE THAT'S STILL THERE) in the space of about six weeks, and that's a lot of mental effort. I mean, narrative fiction is one thing--but humor can actually be kind of nerve-wracking, because (as I'm so fond of saying), it's either funny or it's not, and if you're any good at it, you know when it's not, and you just have to sit there sweating blood until you come up with something that is. Which is why I love a nice rambly entry or recap that just happens on a whim, because it's not me trying, and it doesn't involve breaking out into metaphorical hives. So my point, and I did have one, is that I'm having to recognize that maybe I am just a little bit burnt out right now. But the more time you take off from something, the harder it is to get back into it--think of how much you dread going back to work after several days off--so I spent yesterday setting up footnotes on New Moon, should something else in the house blow up and I find myself ever needing to do a third e-book. Just putting in the numbers and reminders to myself ("Talk about that news article for this one, here's the link"), which I also did last November for the Twilight 15M, and let me tell you, a year later, that really came in handy. So I did that to ease myself back into footnoting, so on and so forth.

I think one of the things I'm going to try to do is be a bit kinder to myself, in terms of work. What I really need to do, I think, is stop trying to create deadlines and expectations for myself--which sounds odd, but the thing is, the ones I create are stressful, self-defeating, and counterproductive. I think you do need discipline, but I need to live more in the present with it--put in the daily hours and work steadily and do my best, but not worry as to whether that "best" is good enough, and if I'm "on track" and set all these grand unattainable plans, because that does not produce results for me. In fact, it makes me kind of crazy, and the best things I've done in my life were, in fact, the things I did on a whim and with no expectations. That may not work for you, but it seems to work for me. So I'm going to try to live more with my best efforts in the present and stop trying to stress myself out about the future.

(I have a Zen Garden app on my phone that starts up with little sayings, and one of them was, "To a mind that is still, the whole universe surrenders." I think it's a little like that.)

Meanwhile, in other news, we're supposed to get snow tomorrow (YAY), and the dogs are deeply depressed because it's too cold for them to go out and play (I'll let them out after lunch, once it's warmed up a bit). Also, I think my birthday present to myself will be a whole mess of eyeshadow samples from Aromaleigh, since they're only $1 each anyway, last a good long time, and you can get as many as you want. (Aromaleigh: TLE approved.)

A few quick links:

'The 40 Year Old Virgin Who Knocked Up Sarah Marshall and Felt Superbad About It' is Sadly Real and Has a Trailer. And sharp-eyed folks on Twitter noticed that a certain sparklepire shows up at 1:37. (BEHOLD.) Way to steal from the easiest target ever and still fail at humor, guys.

New Moon retold with lolcats.

Vampirism Does Not Make Stalking Attractive. I think I might actually buy this shirt to sleep in. You know, as a precautionary measure.

Remember the Twilight hate questionnaire a lot of you guys filled out? Well, [livejournal.com profile] octoberland's article is up now!

From [livejournal.com profile] oasis_beatles: [livejournal.com profile] megmatthews20 needs eye surgery related to Marfan Syndrome, can you help? [livejournal.com profile] hope_in_sight is running a general/fandom auction to raise the $1500. As far as vouching for the validity of it, I recognize Meg's username as a longtime reader/commenter here (I was actually kind of shocked when I saw who it was for, the name was so familiar to me). I haven't seen her comment in a long while, for reasons that should be obvious.

Also, I know there were a couple of similar reader requests in my LJ messages, but I swear to you, my inbox has eaten them. I rarely if ever delete messages there, and there's at least two I can't find now. I have to add, though, that I'm very wary of posting requests for causes that can't be easily verified, so keep that in mind.

Unfortunately, I also get dismissive comments from people about my writing (looking at you, Mom). Right now, my dreams of becoming a professional writer are very vague, so for you, someone who has actually PUBLISHED, to get that kind of reaction must be even more hurtful.

For what it's worth, *I* appreciate your work.

this entry really rang true for me- especially-
So I'm going to try to live more with my best efforts in the present and stop trying to stress myself out about the future.
I have an interview for a place at Cambridge University on Monday (2 days!), and I am so stressed about it you wouldn't believe- trying to prepare and do mocks on top of an normal absurd work load that i put myself under (I'm studying Chemistry, Physics, Maths and Further Maths if that gives you any idea of it) and I'm literally making myself ill with worry.

So to recognise that you're going through the same and I'm not the only one forcing to do more than I can manage is brilliant. I've just had a huge cry about it and you brought a smile to my face.

So thank you. Oh, and New Moon in 15 mins was great, well done.

Just saw this now and wanted to say good luck! Cambridge interviews are not as scary as they're made out to be. They expect you to be nervous and they'll generally want to put you at your ease, not trip you up. (I studied Archaeology & Anthropology; my interviewers were lovely.)

Hope it all goes well!

Oh God. Man, what happened to real parodies like Airplane! and Hot Shots!? These guys have completely ruined the genre so much that I forget that it can be funny.

Although I don't think R-rated comedies are the easiest target ever. Making a parody of a comedy seems like a more difficult task than, say, parodying disaster movies. Which Airplane! already did.

We're supposed to get snow tomorrow too! And it was about 65F yesterday. So confused.

Oh, no. That Apatow-parody looks just awful. Especially since his movies are usually pretty satirical themselves. And adding a Twilight-mock? Really? They don't exactly attract the same audience. If your mockery of something is dumber than the thing itself, you are most decidedly Doing It Wrong. They should just leave it to the experts at Snarkfest. *sigh*

[livejournal.com profile] octoberland's article was very interesting--I was kind of stunned at the part about how she asked fans for input, too, and hardly anyone replied. In my experience, they're a maniacally defensive crowd. She should have stopped by MyLifeIsTwilight.com. O____o

I think the twifans are so used to been mocked/insulted/belittled that are pretty much wary of anyone outside their group asking them about the series...wich is sad because I would had liked to see their view reflected.

Also a lot of other cultures use the Watching sleep as a way to show romantic inclinations on their works of fiction?

It's snowing in Houston right now! And for Houston, it's a BLIZZARD. Seriously, barely any on the ground and they let us out of high school at noon. Everyone had cameras out and they were all hanging out of school windows and I saw someone trying to catch enough to make a snowball...while the snow looked like rain. But right about now, there's an inch of snow on the ground and solid flakes and it's AWESOME.
So...yeah! Watch out for that!

So, sometimes when I'm bored with the internet I like to look at the missed connections on Craigslist because most of them are so random and unspecific that I find them hilarious. Anyway, I came across this (http://greensboro.craigslist.org/mis/1478341709.html) about a New Moon showing, and I hope to God that's someone's clever way of saying how creepy and stalkery Twilight is because if not...well, I just don't know.

Your stuff is brilliant - I just found you the other day and am telling everyone I know about this site.

It is very weird that a paper cut sends Jasper into a frenzy, when, well, they go to high school. With high school girls. Who, if they aren't all on Seasonale, well, not to be indelicate, but - really.

Also, I see some serious Rocky Horror action for these films. I saw New Moon at a morning show during the week - so no screaming. There was one guy who did running commentary, mostly snarking on Jacob, and it was hilarious.

You and Iowahawk are my only "must reads" on the interwebs these days. Thank you Cleo-Sparkle-Linda-Lauren for your work - the only downside is that I may need supplemental oxygen available when I read you. . .

Oh, good gravy, the still pictures for that movie with the really long title almost gave me dry heaves. I was almost hoping that it was yet another example of Seltzer and Friedberg failing to be funny, but it's actually being directed by some other guy I've never heard of.

Notes to "parody" film makers: 1) The really long title thing only worked with Don't Be a Menace because it didn't actually include word-for-word bits from the movie in them, and 2) aping the Seltzer-Friedberg "style" is a special 32nd flavor of fail (in other words, "don't do it").
