So! Today is the 10th anniversary of this LJ! And even though I am about to link you to a ton of stuff not actually on this LJ, I still consider it the mothership.

My second piece is up on The Toast! If you read it before, a Significant Correction has been made. It changes EVERYTHING. RUN, JULIE.

(The Toast is on fire generally today, btw.)

Over on my tumblr: a gorgeous new illustrated Hunger Games: Catching Fire poster, the Sleepy Hollow gang playing baseball (the follow-up), a few new Hannibal things (OMG), Old Maps of Paris, Kate Beaton's Halloween quiz, and Martha Stewart Halloween photography shut up.

Over on my new side tumblr: the lesser-known jacket of Anna Valerious, wonderful Dracula illustrations by Anne Yvonne Gilbert, and that POOF! gif I wanted.

And, in case you missed it, I finished the recap for the first episode of NBC's Dracula a couple of days ago (I need to go back and answer a lot of comments. ). I am SUPER, SUPER HOPING to make this November 1st deadline for my Black Ribbon story before the next episode that night, just in time to start the process all over again. Wish me luck!

I was going to post a book discussion but then I was tired and also sick. But it is Halloween so I will share something with you, via The Hairpin, from the scariest movie I have ever seen in the theater:

BEFORE YOU DIE, YOU SEE )

Obviously, this is your cue to share a movie that has scared you stupid. I want experiences of real, actual, physical terror if you've got it.

NOTE: ALSO: TCM is running The Innocents later tonight; don't miss that if you found the discussion interesting.

ETA: I have been reminded of Tiny Moist Hand!

Yesterday: A new Secret Life of Dolls. By the way, someone asked in the comments when the Cliffhanging Last Line would come to fruition. I had intended it more as Deep Foreshadowing to pay off at a much later date, but once I sat down and thought about it--it doesn't make much sense to put it off that long (in the scheme of things that only I know). So next week, as promised, we will have Shelf Justice, and then the week after that, we will find out what the last line means.

However, for the purposes of the story time frame, we are all going to have to pretend that the U.S. Postal Service has been replaced by the Pony Express, or maybe unusually large carrier pigeons. Actually, given what happened with Tonner Edward, that may not be too much of a stretch.

Meanwhile: you remember [livejournal.com profile] snowcoma, who adopted Edward Cat for her mom. She's in medical trouble now too. There are some really wonderful things up for auction for her as well--if you lost out on some of the [livejournal.com profile] foresthouseeyes lots, you might consider browsing Grace's as well. So far I'm seeing jewelry, artwork, perfume oils, fiction, scarves, Meyer lemon cuttings, and a signed copy of [livejournal.com profile] cupcake_goth's Gothic Charm School book. So you can get a year of postcards from The Littlest Edward (he may want to make his own stationery, I don't know) over on one community, and a year of postcards from Galadriel (filled with clues and predictions) on the other.

Also: Mark has finished Reading Harry Potter, and I have heard that he said in the comments there what his next Read would be. I won't spoil it, but it is something I had considered offering to recap if we managed to raise enough for both of Emily's surgeries. Basically, I wanted to wait and make sure we weren't going recap the same thing at the same time. So: we will see.

Meanwhile-meanwhile: Scary Deathmatch Finals over at [livejournal.com profile] snacky's!

Also-also: tonight, I will be celebrating Halloween dressed as a crazy doll lady writing the Secret Life installment-after-next. The hellions down the street will probably do terrible things to our tires. If I am lucky, there will be peanut butter cups. Who else has plans?

OH HOLY SHIT I ALMOST FORGOT. Today is the seventh birthday of this journal! Also that.

So, to begin: wow. The auctions at [livejournal.com profile] foresthouseeyes have really taken off. Of note: Kevin and Dayna are offering up the January episode of [livejournal.com profile] made_of_fail_pc; Kevin is offering a Straight Guy Review of a Bad Romance Novel ("Bodice rippers... anything with Fabio on the cover... Pregnesia"); and Dayna is giving up a book that Wil Wheaton signed because apparently she couldn't find a knife sharp enough to hack off one of her own limbs and offer that up. Everything else I keep wanting to go in there and fight people for myself, which is counter-productive to my own budgetary aims, so consider yourself lucky.

I'm still trying to figure out what (besides signed books on the auction comm) I can offer. I just really don't know that I can fulfill a promise to write a Movies in Fifteen Minutes. Shit, I was never able to go back and do Order of the Phoenix, and I wanted to do that. I don't want to promise something I can't deliver, and I'd also like for everyone to be able to read it. On the other hand, a terrible thought did occur to me: I never recapped The Host. And recaps are a lot easier to write. The dread spectre of some kind of recap blogathon, whatever people are interested in me torturing myself with, occurred to me. I'm open to suggestions.

Meanwhile: Valerie and I took little Henry to the zoo today. Guess I who saw there? Spoiler: LOOK AT MY ICON )

Internets, there are "sexy" Halloween "costumes." We need to discuss this.

I mean, yes, there are and have always been. I am not here to to discuss the sociofeminopolitical implications of "Slutoween." I am here to say, simply, unto you: WTF. Picspam )

ETA: I cut Sexy Optimus Prime from the first draft of this entry. Judging by the responses on Twitter, I'm wishing I'd left it in.

So today is my journal birthday (six years old!). Also: HALLOWEEN. Wish I felt more celebratory. I felt pretty horrible all week, but then I cheered myself up with a Twitter-spamming errand-shenanigans photo safari this morning (uh... sorry about that, Twitfolk). It went like so:

You're in Honeydukes? )

It is October! I need to remember to change my calendar.

(Still truckin'. Getting down to the final details, which are often the most difficult to track down, which is why I put them off to the end. Involves a lot of screaming at now-defunct fansites, apparently.

ETA: Holy shit, you guys, I think I just finished. I mean, there's some really tedious checking to do, but... the actual work part is done. Wow. I kind of don't know what to do with myself.

... well, you know who they come to.

You know who they haven't come to yet? This guy (as my sister would say). We called Best Buy. The laptop was supposed to come in today (and bless those of y'all who actually remembered that it was supposed to come in today). Apparently it's on a truck somewhere (and not a UPS truck, because the Brown SWAT would sort that shit out for me with a quickness) and it won't be in until Wednesday. My mother was indignant. I was completely unsurprised. And we can't go get another one, because we've already paid for this one and our warranty/service whatever is specifically attached to the serial number hoodoo on this particular machine. I just shrugged and went on my non-computer-owning way.

I am completely over a lot of things summer, by the way. Mostly, it rained. And what did it rain? Drama. Besides, I tend to consider May in Alabama as being "summer"--it's not like I have any school to get in or out of, so it doesn't make any difference to me--so I've already had my full three months and then some. Summer is so five minutes ago. I am moving on to The Burnt Orange Season. Halloween, specifically. If stores can put up the Christmas displays at 9 pm, October 31st (and I actually witnessed this once), I can start gearing up for Halloween now. It'll help me get back into a Black Ribbon mood anyway.

(As a sidenote, I can't wait for the day that freakin' book is finally on a freakin' shelf and y'all can go, "My God, she went on about this thing on Livejournal for SIX YEARS." Actually, if I woke up and found out that elves had finished writing it for me in the night, the future publishing process would make it more like seven years. Oh, number seven, you so auspicious. And crazy.)

Just a little bit of linkspam, because I am tired and my eyelid is still jumping and it looks like it's going to be good for me to take an entire weekend off (no, the recap for last week's True Blood is still not ready):

Why was Terrence Howard booted from 'Iron Man 2'? "Hollywood insiders believe the exit stems from Terrence Howard's difficult behavior on the set of Iron Man. But those with intimate knowledge of the situation suggest a far more dramatic backstory: Howard was the first actor signed to the film and, on top of that, was the highest-paid. That's right: more than Gwyneth Paltrow. More than Jeff Bridges. More than Robert Downey Jr." I cannot even fathom that. At all.

A little Twilight--and here's why I'm addicted to Twilight (or its fandom, or the general phenomenon, or something), y'all: I was in a terrible mood last night, and then I heard that Edward will have THE SKIN OF A KILLER (NO, BELLA, DON'T TOUCH ME, I AM A MONSTER, WHY JUST LAST WEEK I BROKE EMMETT'S STEREO) and then I laughed and I felt much better. Also: leaks from the soundtrack (I wouldn't feel right just putting the whole thing up a free-for-all download, but... yeah, I do have it, thanks to everyone who offered to send it); Love, Pain and the Vampire Thing at the (unexpectedly snarky) NYT; more TOUR OF TERROR carnage: Pattinson and Hardwicke to appear at the Apple store in Soho tomorrow night. DAMN. There are actual politicians who haven't spent this much time on the road campaigning.

THE GREATEST HALLOWEEN COSTUMES EVER: Heidi Klum OMG and I don't know who this is as Rose McGowan with a gun for a leg from Planet Terror but HOLY SHIT.

I THINK IT'S TIME FOR A POLL

A band of trick-or-treaters just came to our door and sang my mother a song about pulling down her underwear. SOMEHOW, THEY ESCAPED WITH THEIR LIVES.

("What was that about my underwear...?" "When I was a kid, it was something about smelling your feet." "Oh...?")

Fairly productive day--a long slow slog, but I kept on keepin' on. I mean, my eyelid's started twitching again, but what're you gonna do.

Today's journal flashback: Van Helsing in Fifteen Minutes, because that's pretty much what started everything. And, you know, Halloween and stuff. Speaking of which, I have something fun planned for tomorrow, if I can get it all to work.

Meanwhile, the dogs went crazy yesterday evening while everyone thought someone else was watching them and they tore a large strip of wallpaper off near the kitchen window. Which means that if we can't match the wallpaper (we probably can't), we'll have to re-paper the entire kitchen. You know, because we have the money or the fortitude to deal with that right now. Also, they ATE THE WALLPAPER, WHAT THE HELL. So now we're going to have to get a second crate (they're too big to both fit in the old one) and crate them during the day because I can't watch them and get work done, which hurts my heart but guess what? It's not like we can let them run around and destroy the house, either--they've already acquired a taste for magazines as it is. Fnarr.

Total change of subject: can anyone recommend a good, free music player/program for my computer that is NOT iTunes? Yahoo Jukebox has decided to suck hosewater since they killed Y! Unlimited and tried to send everyone over to Rhapsody, WHICH IS NOT FREE, leaving the player a shell of what it once was. I downloaded Media Monkey and it seems okay... )

I started writing up a list of Specific "Fifteen Minutes" Footnotes That Still Need Work (links, research, a quick polish, whatever), and the Dracula one's kind of long, the Van Helsing one's okay, the POA one is really short, and then you to get to the King Arthur list, and it says, I am not kidding,
Total mess. Seriously, you have like 6 pages of unincorporated research. Get basic intro together.
HAVE YOU DONE ANY WORK ON THIS AT ALL?
Pelagius?
And then I just said to hell with it and took the dogs for a walk.

Today's journal flashback: a handful of shorter movie bits, Wicker Park ("A movie I haven't seen in five minutes, if you will"), the cracked-out Jurassic Park 4 script (really honestly truly, not making it up), and... hey, why not a discussion of Picnic at Hanging Rock? Can't think why not.

Earlier today, because I don't want y'all to overlook it: Where my synesthetes at?

From [livejournal.com profile] mercat: "There are several different movements in action to try to save Pushing Daisies, so I thought I'd link you to them: Help Bees Help Daisies, Pies for Poverty, Honey for the Homeless, and a mail-in (more info)." And I'll tell you truthfully, now is the time to act. You know, not several months later like the Moonlight fandom, bless them.

And from [livejournal.com profile] entropy_and_me: Doctor Who spoiler ) I'll just be in my scream-proof anti-fangirl bunker now if you need me.

More linkspam, now that I have crushed half my readership's souls: Han Solo Ain't Never Had No Sex With Princess Leia in a Star War! )

YAY COLD!

Oct. 28th, 2008 06:37 pm
cleolinda: (twilight)
IT IS SO COLD, YAY! I don't think I've ever pulled out Queen Susan this early in the year. Although that was partly because I forgot that my mother had put my two sweater coats into the cedar closet, and I was tearing up the house in despair looking for them (the blue one is gorgeous! and the black one has a HOOD, y'all) so I would have something to wear outside. Next up: the hot chocolate. I hope the mini-marshmallows aren't stale.

Today's journal flashback: since I'm running out of days and substantial entries, let's do some more weird dreams. How about the time Dream!Jennifer Connelly and I ran into... someone; the one where Tyler Durden and I fled the yippy dogs; and then I nearly dated a vampire but I had to catch a shuttle to the moon.

Llinkspam! I think we need some kittens now )

So. Mostly productive today; posted True Blood recap #7 late this afternoon--I still have last night's episode to recap as well. (While we're here: An interview with Sam "Werecollie" Trammell [no spoilers as far as I can tell].)

Today's journal flashback: my dentist, Dr. Jones (no relation), likes to sing along with disco songs.

Oh, and something I think I'm going to start using Twitter for--you know those ALERT ALERT ALERT posts I do sometimes? I'm still going to do those for OH MY GOD GO HERE NOW things, but if I see something really awesome (litmus test: do I start shrieking and clapping like a fool?) that isn't quite that urgent, I will probably post the link on Twitter first (example) and then have it in the normal linkspam later in the day. So, you know, if you're into Twitter, something to keep in mind. And even if you're not, you can still check my page on your usual website rounds.

On to the linkspam: Alice in Wonderland news! )
