I am waiting for a professional do you like me yes/no/maybe check one answer right now, and I am not doing a very good job of not driving my friends and family crazy with my Eeyore stoicism and nervous upset stomach. I have also broken out with strange rosacea-like blargh across my cheeks, because my body likes to think of new and interesting ways to rebel every time I intellectually compartmentalize anxiety and pretend it's not there, but this is still better than that GIGANTIC HEINOUS FEVER BLISTER I got on my lip when Mom went into surgery. (Anxiety I calmly refuse to acknowledge has, over the years, also chosen to express itself as dizzy spells, blood pressure spikes, severe fatigue, nausea, facial blemishes, and, on occasion, boils. I am hoping none of the other plagues of Egypt show up.)

Meanwhile! As I am waiting! We have many things to discuss.

My sister has a new cat, and his name is Jackson. (ETA: My sister does not have a new cat here.) picture )

There is a new Made of Fail episode up.

Also, a Help Pakistan fandom auction (I heard something to the effect that 20% of the country is underwater?).

Mark is now three chapters into Order of the Phoenix.

Stephen Fry is... on his way to Mobile, Alabama? I don't even know.

Entertainment linkspam! Man, it's nice when I can keep reasonably on top of this stuff and not spam you with a Wall o' Text. In which things get scary IRL )

As mentioned earlier: Eclipse in Fifteen Minutes went up a few hours ago.

And now: the new Eclipse-themed Made of Fail podcast that I'm on. (There is some very strong language here and there, so be warned.) At pretty much exactly 20 minutes in, we realize that KC has no idea what happens in Breaking Dawn. At 20:34, you can actually hear me rubbing my hands together in a brisk burst of evil. The next 16 minutes are a full game of Horrify the Twilight Noob: Breaking Dawn Edition recorded for posterity, underscored by unusually maniacal laughter from my general direction. We get to The Birth Scene (and, more to the point, What Happens Afterward. "Oh, don't worry, Jacob will look out for the children--" "No no no! No! No! Don't you dare! DON'T YOU DARE! I have to tell this, I have to tell this! Because this is my favorite game") and KC has the most incredibly epic reaction. I start laughing, first really loudly, and then so hard that sound stops coming out of my mouth. (God, I have such a weird laugh.) If you have ever wanted to hear a full explanation of what happens in that last book, this is your chance.

Also discussed: Kevin's thoughts on Airbender (I hadn't seen it at that point), the saga of Edward Cat, a sustained meltdown from Dayna, and later, a jewelry-nerd rage spasm from me ("That makes me so! angry! ANGRY!!") around 1:28:30. Apparently I was in fine, or at least somewhat manic, form for this episode.

Meanwhile: in case you are wondering why it takes so long to write Fifteen Minutes things nowadays, it might help to see what my process is like. I THINK IT IS TIME FOR A DAIQUIRI IN A BAG )

And now, to bed. I have a feeling I will sleep very well tonight.

Oh my Lorrrrrrd. I usually wake up--without needing an alarm, no less--somewhere in the vicinity of 6:20-6:40 am, and I get up and haul Lizzie downstairs and get breakfast and let the dogs outside, and so I'm well settled in by the time my mother leaves for work an hour later. Today, she woke me up at quarter of eight. I then passed out on the couch until 9:15 am, at which point I could finally raise my head high enough to attempt sustenance. I've been conscious since then, but just barely. In fact, I keep nodding off right where I'm sitting for two-minute micronaps. The massive headache isn't helping. I've had an upset stomach for a few days now (long story, but it's not a big deal. It happens from time to time), and it kept me up all night, which I think is part of it. But I'm also stiff and achy. I don't know if I'm coming down with something or what. Because it's not like I had some kind of partyriffic Memorial Day. I didn't even have so much as a Woodchuck. I did go to see Prince of Persia, but I didn't even have a headache afterwards. Apparently I have a delayed hangover from Jake Gyllenhaal's abs or something.

(I don't have a whole lot of thoughts on Prince of Persia, but only because I feel like hell. I would have more thoughts if I felt better. It was at least as good as Clash of the Titans, and probably better, although not as unintentionally funny. Gemma Arterton again, though! I like her. She pretty. And I like when she explains things in mystically plummy tones. If Tonner upgraded their Tamina doll to her full princess outfit at the beginning, I would buy the shit out of that. And Jake Gyllenhaal brought a pleasing combination of parkour and puppy-dog eyes. It's not the greatest movie in the world, and I still want to know why they couldn't just hire darker-skinned actors rather than tan up the ones they did have, but it's pretty, and I've paid to see worse.)

Speaking of microsleep (it's a topic!), the new Made of Fail podcast is up; the gang discusses the Nightmare on Elm Street remake, and DC comics writer Sterling Gates is also on hand to talk about Supergirl and War of the Supermen.

Also, there seems to be a shakeup in Middle-earth: Guillermo del Toro quits 'Hobbit' film over delays; Peter Jackson Might Direct The Hobbit… Only If He's Allowed; Hollywood Ink: No, Peter Jackson Won't Take Over The Hobbit.

I am hideously late on mentioning this, and I'm not sure how it slipped my mind when I meant to post it last week: remember the United Airlines thing? Well, they're still being vile. Here's the part that is diabolically brilliant, in my opinion, and was only thwarted because [livejournal.com profile] evilpuppy paid closer attention than a lot of people would:

Now, I DID receive the check [to cover taxi expenses] she mentioned, however, there was something printed above the endorsement line that stopped me from cashing it.

"Endorsement of this check is in full settlement and release of all claims that payee has asserted or may assert against United Airlines, it's connecting carriers, agents, and employees for loss, damages or delay arising from any UA Flight or the airwaybill associated with this claim."

Really? Really?

YOU GUYS

May. 11th, 2010 11:26 am
cleolinda: (twilight lolcat)
I just saw this and I am so blown away by it that I up and ran to Semagic JUST TO POST A LIVEJOURNAL ENTRY FOR IT:

Paul W.S. Anderson Casts His 'Three Musketeers.' Okay, stand back. Are you ready for this? I don't think you're ready for this. Here we go:

Logan Lerman will play D'Artagnan, the young man who leaves home to join France's elite fighting force, and gets hooked up with the three titular musketeers. Porthos, Athos, and Aramis will be played by Ray Stevenson (one of my very favorites, and the perfect Porthos), Matthew MacFadyen, and Luke Evans, respectively.

It's the villains who will have film geeks really lining up, though. Everyone's favorite Nazi, Christoph Waltz, will be playing the dastardly Cardinal Richelieu, and Mads Mikkelsen will be playing Rochefort. Orlando Bloom has been offered the part of the Duke of Buckingham, but has not yet accepted. Of course, since this is an Anderson movie, Milla Jovovich has nabbed a part. She'll be playing Milady de Winter, whom Anderson describes as "a 17th century Bond girl." Er, I guess.

POW.

Meanwhile, I'm trying to catch up with Made of Fail, which has just come out with Episode Twenty-Nine: If you liked it, you should have put a Power Ring on it. I think this is the one with Lewis Lovhaug (aka Linkara) (again). I listened to about three different shows yesterday, so I'm not sure which came out when anymore. I believe I will be on the July episode; the next one will be Dayna having a meltdown over the Nightmare on Elm Street remake, IIRC, and then there's the June anniversary ep (which I might be on, albeit briefly? I don't know?). So there's that.

More linkspam! )

1) The United Airlines debacle: As of this writing, they have gotten in touch with [livejournal.com profile] evilpuppy, given her the number of a representative to call, and seem to be taking this seriously. I'll update you more fully once the dust settles on that; I'm in a wait-and-see mode at this point. Y'all's comments from yesterday are an eye-opener, though.

2) I posted Clash of the Titans in Fifteen Minutes on Sunday. I can't make icons at the moment, as I still haven't put anything spiffier than MS Paint on this computer.

3) I am still nominated for a thing! Voting seems to close on Thursday?

4) Speaking of Thursday, word on the street is that the U.S. Post Office intends to close at 5 pm, instead of staying open until midnight to let people get their taxes mailed out at the last minute. Be advised.

5) Made of Fail has a Formspring account! As do Kevin and Dayna individually! I have not answered questions on mine for a few days, but I've already answered 400, so I think I can take a little break!

5b) Please, guys, I love y'all, but don't ask me for psychiatric advice on Formspring. I'm not qualified. I can talk about my own experiences, but I really can't give out medical advice. All I'm going to be able to say is, "If you are concerned about this, you should talk to a doctor and/or therapist."

6) Speaking of Dayna, she sat through the New Moon porn "parody" and texted me through the whole thing, as you might have seen yesterday (NSFW). (With a special appearance by Kevin, who was on the phone with me on unrelated matters during the second half! "So I'm thinking it'll take a week to write that, these things... just... do... ... ... uh..." "Dayna texting you again?" "She says they miked... Rosalie." "Uh.") Also, I owe her five actual dollars now. (I was playing the odds, people!) The screencaps are safe for work, but the general conversation is graphic, crude, mind-scarring, and frequently devolves to "Ah," "Argh," and "Oh dear" on my part. The movie squicked Dayna, if that tells you anything.

New Made of Fail! In which DAYNA MEETS WIL WHEATON. I have a feeling my dogs will enjoy this one, probably because they will be the only ones able to hear it. (Happy birthday, [livejournal.com profile] queenanthai!)

New Tonner Doctor Who pictures! (Compare to the smaller picture still at the top of the page.) See, I told you that they get sneaky and update the pictures. I just... don't know that you're going to like them any better.

New book from Stephenie Meyer in June! Except that it's a 192-page novella about a character who was in Eclipse for 10 pages and no one cares about. Meanwhile, she said a long while back that she would never write anything similar for Carlisle (the original Cullen who was turned in the 1600s), because that would require research. On the upside, $1 from each copy will go to the Red Cross, or you can read it for free two days later with an option to donate directly. Due to the love-hate embrace these books and I are locked in (let's face it: Twilight-related page hits have been very good to me), I will probably recap it. (Speaking of Things I Have Recapped, apparently a great Twifan cry of "WHAT ABOUT MIDNIGHT SUN????!1?" went up on Twitter.)

Also, if you make an eyeshadow called Skin of a Killer, I WILL buy it. I will hate myself, but I will do it. FOR SCIENCE.

(IT WAS $11.25 FOR TEN SAMPLES!! With FREE SHIPPING. You can't beat that WITH A STICK!)

(You should probably beat me with a stick, but...)

Today on Tumblr: It's another Victorian/vampire/goth-themed day! Don't miss the amazing Atwood-esque white/violet dress.

Snackfood Deathmatch, Semifinals round 2: Rice Krispies treats vs. cinnamon rolls! Are you ready to rumble?

Ricky Martin is livin' la vida open, says he's gay. I don't know if it's just that I spent yesterday afternoon offline reading, but I'm really not seeing a whole lot of reaction to this. Which is probably the way it should be.

The Domestic Poster for Iron Man 2; Smell Like Tony Stark With Iron Man Cologne.

The whole concept cannot help but beg the question: What exactly does Tony Stark/Iron Man smell like? In our imagination, l'aroma de Stark involves the scent of crisp hundos, mixed with new car smell, motor oil, and Axe body spray. Which is to say masculine and slightly industrial, with just a splash of douchebag.

The original fragrance has been described as "leathery" and "woody" (tee hee) and the Diesel website calls it "a voluptuous and explosive cocktail that bears witness to a man with an identity as strong as it is present, almost magnetic," which sounds pretty much like what I just said.

'Knight and Day' Trailer: Good Cruise or Bad Cruise?

Will Smith locked for two Independence Day sequels? No. NO. NO! I already did the first one for the book! I AM NOT GOING BACK TO THIS.

Sister Girl will apparently be able to keep her finger, although she assures me it was "barely holding on." They gave her a digital block (apparently this is supposed to numb the entire finger?) but it... kind of didn't work, and she felt all four stitches. (They offered DermaBond as an alternative. That's right: they offered to glue my sister's finger back on.) The doctor (who, if he was an intern as she had feared, was the oldest one on record) asked if he should stop or try something else and she said, "NO JUST FINISH IT OKAY JUST FINISH IT I JUST WANT IT TO BE OVER." Then, they put a Band-Aid on her finger, which is really so useless that I feel like it must have been cosmetic, or maybe just to keep the stitches dry. She then entered an outpatient treatment program of Taco Bell and OxyContin, and will be off work a couple of days while she is painkillered up.

Meanwhile, I forgot to mention that there's a new Made of Fail podcast up with MarzGurl from That Guy With the Glasses. (Guys, am I supposed to be on the next one this month? I can't remember.)

Meanwhile-meanwhile, over at Formspring: 175 anonymous questions answered, 75 to go. It seems to be glitching, though, and won't show anything when you click "more." Maybe I'll copypaste the answers somewhere else periodically. They better come back, though, because that's like 150 answers lost if they don't.

Also, barring unforeseen circumstances, I will be liveblogging the Oscars tonight. My understanding is that, due to a TV affiliate dispute of some kind in New York, some channels will not be allowed to carry the Oscars. You will be able to watch them streaming live (in theory. Good luck with that) courtesy of the AP.

I forgot to mention! New episode of Made of Fail is up. "It's like... fudge... made of out PEANUT BUTTER."

Meanwhile! Right after I posted that last entry--seriously, I hit "post" while putting on my shoes--I went out and saw Sherlock Holmes again, this time with my mother. More Holmesian nerditry )

(For those of you wondering when I'll ever shut up about Sherlock Holmes: IT'S NOT TWILIGHT, OKAY? So shut it and count your blessings.)

Meanwhile: omg so cold. I love it. It's already one o'clock, but it's still only 26°F, which means it only gets colder from here. In fact, we've got snow predicted for Thursday. The dogs are bored out of their minds because I won't let them stay outside longer than ten minutes at a time; I'm under a fleece blanket (NOT A SNUGGIE) in the den at my laptop, and I had to put on my huge floor-length coat and my gloves just to take them out front. (I do have a pair of full-coverage gloves, but I put on my favorites just because they are pretty: fingerless gloves recycled from toesocks, because a hole got into one of the toes, and they were too awesome to throw away. Bonus photo feature: My stubby little hobbit hand.)

Fingerless gloves, recycled from toesocks on Twitpic

(Speaking of accessories: the purse I decided on, because it's simple, and the grey-on-black paisley is interesting but casual. I'm going to try to fix my faux Fendi for more stylish occasions, but this looks like a good everyday bag. And it's from Etsy, yay.)

And I think I had something else to mention but I can't remember what but I'm sure I will later. Very busy, tons of work, trying to alternate footnotes with novel-writing, yay.

The new Made of Fail podcast is up, and it's something like my fifth appearance on the show--and this time we also have Rinna from Poufwa, the first podcast I ever did! Also, my sexy, sexy phlegm ("Yeah... I'm reporting live from my death bed..."), brought in loud and clear courtesy of my new headset. Topic: half New Moon and half Crazy Fans, with a substantial segment on the Dollhouse cancellation up front (aw, hell, I just heard myself cough in the background).

("I am in bed with another woman right now...")

And now, I'm going back to bed.

ETA: OH BY THE WAY we totally discuss the Twilight porno that Dayna watched for us.

Meanwhile, what are you thankful for? Even if you are not American or eating many awesome foods today, although if not, I do pity you a teensy bit. Of course, you also don't have to deal with the accompanying Family Holiday Drama most of the rest of us do, so... maybe we're even.

I, for one, am thankful for the Made of Fail crew, who sent me these:

(The gold and silver shimmer M&M phrases are a reference to Episode 10, which I was on--the one people seem to recommend most to newcomers. The others just have "15" printed on them, because the M is already on there, and...)

Phew! New Moon Fails to Break Opening Weekend Record. So The Dark Knight is safe. However:

Instead, after clinching the Best Midnight Opening record and Best Opening Day record, New Moon will have to settle for third on the Best Opening Weekend list after walking away with a pretty astonishing $140 million when it was all said and done.

If that number holds up (and it should), the film will replace Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End for third place on the list of all-time best opening weekends (domestic), and will settle in behind only Spider-Man 3 (second) and The Dark Knight (first). Still, with $130 million, New Moon more than doubled Twilight's opening weekend ($69 million) -- in addition to taking in the largest domestic weekend gross of the year.

My final estimate of $140M did turn out to be correct, though. I feel irrationally smug about this, purely from a movie buff point of view.

Meanwhile, the new ep of Made of Fail is about to start recording, and it will actually not be an entire review episode of the movie. Not... entirely.

So I'm still getting used to the keyboard (you know how laptop keyboards are more compact) and the touchpad mouse, since I haven't installed my wireless ones yet (for some reason, I never seem to hit the M key on this one hard enough), but: LIFE IS AWESOME. Also, I get to stay logged into everything (I cannot even tell you how happy this makes me), and I have all my pet programs back, or at least the ones I've remembered to go download so far (INCLUDING SEMAGIC, HUZZAH). I'm currently set up in the den with the dogs, rather than holed up in my room the way I usually would be, and I kind of love it.

My cold is still pretty gnarly; it's at that point where you can tell you're going to have to get snarflier before you get better, you know, as it progresses through the Stages of Phlegm, but I'm holding up. My nose is itching off my face and kind of hurts, plus the chest congestion and all, but I've had it worse.

I'm trying to get back to work now--had a day off, as it were, to freak out over the new laptop--now that I've successfully delivered 2012 in Fifteen Minutes and survived the New Moon preview on Wednesday. I'm not even going to pretend that New Moon in Fifteen Minutes is something Of Which We Do Not Speak, because we've all known since they greenlighted the movie the very day after Twilight was released that I would be doing it. So I'm working on that--couldn't sleep last night due to congestion, so sat up and wrote about six pages on it by hand (this is not all that much, though), and handwrote a bit more this morning. It's really intimidating, not just because I've got the Twilight one (which turned out pretty well) to live up to, but I've also got the last one I did--2012, of course--to live up to as well, since that turned out unexpectedly well. (Probably because writing these for five years with a determined focus on getting better at it has... well, in fact, gotten me better at it.) So I guess you could say that the problem with working on growing as a writer is that you have to keep growing, and sometimes you end up rocking in the corner and twitching a bit because of it. But really, my performance anxiety isn't as bad as it was last year, probably because I've got more time to wrestle with it. Please, let me somehow find a way to see an early preview of Eclipse next summer, I've been ever so good.

Speaking of which, I don't know that I've seen this posted anywhere:

Oh, and we'll be recording the new Made of Fail on Sunday, BECAUSE I HAVE A COMPUTER AGAIN AND I CAN.

P.S. I'm a Master Sparkler Taunter!

Before I forget... again... (I'M SORRY DAYNA OKAY?) (omg feel better and don't go to the hospital again), the new Made of Fail podcast is up. I'm not actually on it, but they do spend the first five or ten minutes giving a recitation of the Compocalypse from The Book of Jobolinda. (Don't apologize for laughing, guys--honestly, it's the only way I've been able to cope with it.) There's also a spirited discussion of the merits of IE8 vs. Firefox ("I'm just going to have to stay in a hot browser threesome... does that make me an internet furry?"). I may be mentioned later on, but I can't remember when (the only way I was able to listen: iTunes on my iPhone, because I am now in the iCult, apparently. Hey, it's great while I'm computerless).

Oh! Wait! I am invoked about 35 minutes in as the Reason Dayna Is a Closet Twihard. "At least it doesn't have realistic belly scales! THE KIND NATIVE TO SCOTLAND." (As far as that goes? Let's just say that the dragon enthusiasts got to the Horrifying Sex Toy medium way before the Twilight entrepreneurs did. You'll have to ask the Made of Fail folks for details, because I am a lady, goddammit.)

Re: Friday's Secret Life: People do this every time one of the characters refers to "Miss Cleo," so--I just want you to know that I'm not trying to hint that you have to call me that. I'm not a TV hotline psychic or the little old lady down the street or anything. Plain "Cleo" is just fine.

Also, if you feel creative in the comments or something, this is precisely what folks created [livejournal.com profile] slodfans for. I mean, fanfic of fanfic will probably destroy the universe, but that's what it's there for. (Newest post: Icons!)

(This afternoon: more guerilla photography, lest I get busted taking pictures of vintage toys again. "Is that--" "NO!" "--one of my forks?" "... Maybe." I did discover that the NECA action figures do have a bit more bendability than I had originally thought. I also put two characters close together in the same shot for the first time and it is TERRIFYING. Like something out of Gulliver's Travels, for real. Anyway. That'll probably go up tomorrow.)

I've rambled on too long already, so: remind me to tell you what I ended up doing to rescue my hair for the next chatty/linky post.

Meanwhile, I totally, deplorably forgot to link the big first-anniversary Made of Fail episode when it came out; there's also a poll up for you to weigh in as to whether you like the new intro better than the old one. (I'll be guesting on the next epsiode, which will be Harry Potter-themed.)

Also-also, from [livejournal.com profile] lightlack: "I was wondering if in one of your future linkspam posts, you might be able to post something about this story in the LA Times about a very young girl with severe schizophrenia. I don't know this family personally, but they're friends of a friend, and after I read the article I wanted to help spread the story, in case somebody out there with connections might know of some resources that could help this little girl out."

[livejournal.com profile] made_of_fail_pc does, in fact, have a new episode up.

[livejournal.com profile] greyduck's new photo comic Quacked Panes (the secret life of rubber duckies, if you will).

The Sirens conference ([livejournal.com profile] sirenscon, October 1-4, 2009, Vail, Colorado):

Inspired by the daring adventures of women characters and compelled by the brilliant works of women authors, Sirens is a conference dedicated to women in fantasy literature. The conference, both scholarly examination and professional retreat, welcomes academics, authors, professionals, and readers to attend—and provide varying perspectives on fantasy books by women, female characters in fantasy works, the market for fantasy by and about women, and how to support women in fantasy literature.

Our Guests of Honor in 2009, our inaugural year, include authors Tamora Pierce, Sherwood Smith, and Kristin Cashore, each of whom has written of strong, smart women warriors. In addition, all attendees are encouraged to propose presentation topics related to women in fantasy: history, social studies, fan studies, business, specific books and series, fantasy generally, or even Sirens's 2009 focus on warrior characters and the women who write them.

The thing is, and I feel awful about this, the due date for proposals is tomorrow. Somehow I got "June 20" stuck in my head and thought I had plenty of time to mention it, because I suck. So if you do have something you think would work, do think about submitting that. I don't know that I'll be able to go, but I would love to and will if I can (depending on health and finances), so if nothing else, keep it in mind if you think you'd be interested in attending.

(Additional details: registration is currently $175 [all programming, events, keynotes and keynote food]; hotel is $109 for 1/2, $134 for 3-4. Adds [livejournal.com profile] praetorianguard, "Hotel is the Vail Cascade Resort and Spa. Think library, awesome bar, hot ski bum staff.")

From [livejournal.com profile] quizzicalsphinx: "Since you're an Alabama girl too, I wondered if you might link people to the Calhoun County Animal Shelter's Donation Page. Due to the economy, they've had steadily declining donations and two weeks ago, they lost their gas. I can't confirm this rumour, but word on the street has it that, as of this morning, they lost their electricity and water as well. If the utilities cannot be restored, up to 300 otherwise adoptable animals may have to be euthanised. Here's the local news report."

Assorted thoughts:

A couple of mail-related things--Lelio? I couldn't figure out what your LJ username was (to contact you), but I did get what you sent me? Also, I brilliantly lost the message (comment? email? PM?) where someone mentioned Rement, but I did get that package as well. The one with The Littlest Shopping Basket?

God, I need an intern.

Lots of jaw/tension headaches. Not sure if it's the weather (air pressure) or not. Or possibly a buildup of massive amounts of fail.

Slept in today, then made necessary purchases at local shopping centers. May go see Up tomorrow.

Yelled at people on eBay who could not hear me for bidding against me on a bargain and thereby making it less of a bargain. Won the auction anyway (it ended at only $18, I am not nickel-and-diming myself to death, stop saying that). You will find out what it was several weeks from now, I think, although rest assured that it is merely a prop, not a character.

Making a doll-sized longbow? Not as easy as you might think.

I had no idea people still loved them so much, and I expected to be roundly mocked for still having mine.

(OMG THE BLUE PONY WITH THE FISH IS SO PRETTY! and also does not have dead, black eyes)

(OMG PWNIES.)

A couple of icons I loved but forgot to mention a while back: In case of explushination, break glass; a fever of 100 and werewolf.

1. The new Made of Fail episode is up, wherein we have a Very Deep Discussion about Watchmen. (It's also the origin of Tiny Rorschach's Journal, although I don't know if that part of the discussion actually made it in.) I've just started listening to it, so I don't know if I've made a fool of myself yet.

And yes, they do ask me about the Secret Life of Dolls, by listener request.

2. My dog is a very strange dog.
