Today is my grandmother's birthday, yay! Yesterday we all had a birthday lunch for her with roast beast beef and carrots and potatoes and cake and ice cream and a creamy orange and pineapple congealed salad which is actually really yum, thanks for asking. We're Southern, what can I say. Also, we ended up talking about Britney Spears, and my grandmother was surprisingly up-to-date on the crazy ("That Dr. Phil said he was going to help her! She needs to stop messing with that married man"). It was a good day.

Greatest Journal: the final days.

Alleged Response from Cassie Edwards Issued via MySpace; Edwards plagiarized for author's note and from Britannica. Seriously? Seriously?

"I, seriously, was like the Lindsay Lohan of scrapbooking." Something I found wandering around from those links: a Nancy Drew keepsake box. Which I took as a sign that I should read the Nancy Drew book Valkyrie got for my birthday next.

(I feel kind of ashamed saying this, but... I kind of want to scrapbook now. Like, only with things I have around the house, because I'm cheap. I mean, couldn't it be fun? A page for a movie you saw, for a book you liked, for something you went out and did one night? Except that I don't even know what you scrapbook on. I guess I could do digital scrapbooking with image files and a scanner.)

Lupercalia 2008 scents are up at BPAL (did you hear! Beth's having a baby!), and Earth Rat sounds really good (I like citrus).

I showered and laundered today, and then lay down for five hours to recover. Ah, Norovirus. Also, I managed to eat a bowl of tomato soup (garnished liberally with crushed saltines) for dinner last night; for lunch today, I had another bowl and a grilled cheese sandwich (!). Felt a little oogy, and spent most of the afternoon digesting it, but succeeded admirably. Sister Girl had a barbecue sandwich. Sister Girl is a maniac.

(Tonight: a baked potato. "You think you can handle it?" "Let's dare to dream.")

Visit scenic Cleoville! No, seriously, visit it, because visiting it (once a day) makes it"improve." Hey, you visit mine, I'll visit yours (link in comments!). ETA: And now to build industry! Wow, this is involved.

Attention: GreatestJournal is going down.

Via [livejournal.com profile] notsohip: Co-founder of GiveWell, a new charity-evaluating organization, tries to astroturf MetaFilter. Link goes to the otf_w report I wrote up (today's update: co-founder booted).

[livejournal.com profile] biblio_filia and I both want to know, each for our own writing projects: does anyone know of a definitive, or even good, Empress Elisabeth of Austria biography?

From [livejournal.com profile] particle_person (both links): Sony BMG drops music DRM. It is the last major label to do so. Unfortunately, they're still doing it wrong. And the EU didn't get the memo, either.

Okay, I checked up on this whole cream-or-no-cream, cloudy-or-not-cloudy thing. My mother's pralines are made with butter and buttermilk, and they don't always come out shiny, but (she says) it usually depends on the weather and whether you can get the pralines hot enough and then out on the wax paper fast enough (it is true, the first ones down are always the shiniest, and the last ones are the cloudiest). Something about the soft boil stage, I don't know. So it is possible to make pralines with some kind of dairy ingredient and still be shiny.

Also, Sister Girl reports that she went to Clary's Cafe and did, in fact, get an eclair as big as her head.

Preachy 'The Invasion' gets a little too heady. Eh. I hear it's terrible, and I kind of don't care. I'm going to see it tonight anyway, because: Nicole Kidman and Daniel Craig for two hours. Also, I hear Jeremy Northam's in it?

Not all the linkspam I've got, but I'm running against the clock here )
