Thirteen going on thirty

Oh, wow--someone sent me a book, but I'm not sure who it's from? There wasn't any name or card or information with it. It's something I had really wanted to read for Black Ribbon research, though, so--thank you so much, whoever it's from!

By the way, if you were working the upstairs register at the Brookwood Mall Books-a-Million on Wednesday night, and you sold a copy of Dead Until Dark to two women, the older of which kept saying "SHE WRITES ABOUT THE SHOW" really loudly over and over again, and the younger of which looked like she kind of wanted to die... I need to apologize to you about that.

("Mom, you really don't need to go announcing to people that you've heard how terrible the Twilight books are. You have to scope people out! You have to find out whether they like them or not first!" "No, see, you need to do that. I don't actually care if people get mad at me." "WELL, CLEARLY WE HAVE ESTABLISHED THAT.")

("I still can't believe you thought EDWARD imprinted on the baby. How long did you think that?" "Ever since you told me! When the book first came out!" "In August? Damn, no wonder you had such a weird look whenever you talked about the movie, if you thought that." "I'M SAYING! He's the love of her life!? And he was going to run off with THEIR BABY?!" "And it didn't strike you as weird that no one in the media raised holy hell about that?" "Look, I don't know. People are crazy. That's all I know.")

Also, I feel like I should say a bit more about The Gift of Fear, since several people raised this concern--it actually doesn't make you feel paranoid at all, or at least I've never talked to anyone who had that problem. (In fact, one of his subsequent books is called Fear Less.) What it actually does is tell you to trust your own gut feelings and how to recognize a true warning signal; it actually made me feel less paranoid, because I knew I could rely on my instincts to tell me if something was wrong. I mean, in addition to normal prudence (locking your doors at night, using the buddy system, not taking candy from strangers, whatever). I haven't read it in a while so I can't cite chapter and verse, but I actually found it comforting and kind of empowering.

And no, it's not culty (even though people like to give the book out to others a lot). It's not some kind of complicated self-help crock. There aren't "steps" or anything. It's just security expert extraordinaire Gavin de Becker (who is awesome, and understands violence against women in a way that so many people don't: "Men are afraid that women will laugh at them. Women are afraid that men will kill them") saying (and this is a gigantic paraphrase), "If you feel uncomfortable or anxious or scared in a situation and you feel like you want to leave or disengage, do that, and don't worry about being 'polite' or what other people will think of you. Trust yourself and put your own safety first." It's not about feeling more scared; it's about listening to the times you already feel scared, and giving yourself permission to act on that.

The "new" Jacob is kinda hot.

(This is OT, but I've been on a Hugh Jackman kick since I saw Australia- which included rewatching all three X-Men movies- and now I'm kind of peeved because my Kate & Leopold dvd isn't working. :/)

Can I just say that I love your linkspam so much? I was sent to your journal for your twilight commentary a few months ago, but I really got hooked onto your journal because of the links. They're always interesting and always stuff I wouldn't know where to find on my own, and they come with the added benefit of having your funny link names :]

I'm really glad you don't link to political news, or brangelina news too. You manage to weed through to the articles that aren't displayed everywhere and that really, really helpful.

Anyhoodle, thanks so much! ♥

Hee, thanks. For some reason, celebrity gossip in and of itself--I don't know if there's just so much of it out there or other dedicated blogs that do it better, but... I'm just not really that interested in it. And politics, well... I like keeping the peace around here. : )

INGLORIOUS BASTERDS- I first read that sentence as meaning pictures of Brad Pitt and *Freddy* Krueger, and I was like "Ooooh! Must see!" (you know if that happened, the next day Jennifer Aniston would be appearing nude on a magazine cover with Michael Myers *g*)

WORST SF FILM OF THE YEAR: I actually thought that ALIENS VS PREDATOR: REQUIEM did not suck. Any film which has a xenomorph treating a hospital maternity ward like an all you can eat buffet is okay in my book. X FILES: I WANT TO BELIEVE I CAN GET MY 90 MINUTES BACK gets my vote...

DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL: Finally, a role in which Keanu's wooden screen presence and stilted dialogue delivery will *suit the part perfectly*!

I go to school in New Orleans and man, everyone just FREAKED out this morning about the snow. I was trying to cram for my French final, but people insisted on yelping, screaming, and frolicking for joy outside my window.

I know for a fact that most people at my school are from the Northwest, so it's not like they've never seen snow... but seriously, everyone because five years old again.

I guess it was kind of brilliant (if I hadn't been studying). It was the strangest sight, really. New Orleans is just one of those places where is doesn't snow. Everyone was outside taking pictures (all of which ended up on Facebook within minutes, I swear) and building snowmen. It was nifty, except for the blinding coldness.

"Men are afraid that women will laugh at them. Women are afraid that men will kill them"

Okay if The Gift of Fear is where this quote originates from I'm going to snap that thing up asap. I heard this phrase for the first time in one of my classes this semester and it sums up so much of the ideas of masculinity and femininity we've been talking about. I love this sort of stuff.

I don't know if you've ever watched anything released by the Media Education Foundation but they have some really amazing videos about social issues and gender in the media, etc. The founder is a professor in my school's Communication department and he covers some fascinating things. Heh, I realize I sound like a shameless plug but I guess after watching some of the documentaries he's shown us I kind of just want to run out and tell every single person about them. It's a shame these things aren't discussed more.

[identity profile] topazera.livejournal.com 2008-12-13 06:14 am (UTC)(link)
Ooh, do you have any documentaries you want to recommend? I'm not sure how widely available these docs are, but I love a good non-fiction movie night. :)

If your Mom had her own reality show on E! where a camera crew just followed her around and filmed her all day, I would watch it all the day long. The stuff she says and does is just so funny. I would have loved to be in line behind you as that conversation was going on.

[identity profile] particle-person.livejournal.com 2008-12-12 07:09 am (UTC)(link)
Bearing in mind that I haven't read the book, the biggest issue I have with Gift of Fear's thesis as described by you above is that people's "fear detector" can be screwed up by certain things, like racism or homophobia. (See: RWS's rant about the Keith Richards thing just before the incarnation of SF3.) So, yes you might be safe if you always follow what the little voice says, but sometimes you'll be needlessly conservative in certain situations.

[identity profile] cleolinda.livejournal.com 2008-12-12 07:14 am (UTC)(link)
Which is true. I'll have to read it again to see if he deals with that. There are criticisms of his work, to be sure. But from a female perspective, I feel like it's more important for women to feel empowered to speak up or walk away when they feel uncomfortable than be concerned that maybe they're being too conservative in a situation that is already setting off alarms. Not to put too fine a point on it, but it's like--would you rather be rude or dead? Which is overly reductive, but the thing is, sometimes you just don't know how something's going to spin out. You just don't. And a lot of women err on the side of politeness because they're afraid they're overreacting, and then any number of bad things happen because they didn't trust their instincts. That's all I'm saying.

David Tennant being out of commission has been the news of the week all over London. It's become lunch-with-your-bosses conversation. Two days ago BBC did a comparisson of DT's Hamlet to his understudy (the man who usually plays Laertes). Apparently the man got a standing ovation for just being able to pull a version of the part off.

That's big in the UK.
