Odds and ends

More pictures of Alice Dollen! She is, in fact, wearing slippers, since someone asked. And the date on her card says only "2009," woe.

(OMG YOU GUYS! THE YELLOW BARBIE CORVETTE I HAD AS A KID! omg. We gave all our Barbie stuff away when I was in college and my sister was in her early teens. If I went out and bought another one for Alice, no matter how cheap, thereby bringing MOAR CLUTTER into the house, my mother would kill me.)

I'm a freshman at Georgetown, and I didn't know about the attempted rape because it happened before I got here. That freaks me out so much. As if the creepy cuddling thing wasn't bad enough.

Ah, see, I can sleep through a lot, too, and have--a slept through a lightning storm, and an earthquake, and I've even sleep-walked outside and I didn't wake up, but you even lightly touch me and I flip out. I once (accidentally) back-handed my mother because she tried to wake me up by shaking my shoulder. So, I guess what I'm saying is, I don't really get how someone can not wake up to that, but wake up to a condom opening--and, I think, another girl woke up to the door closing. And I don't really know what the girls alcohol consumption was, either; they were mostly sorority girls, so I assume that they were drunk, but I suppose I could be wrong.

And, I agree about Edward. I don't think he'd go so far as to touch Bella without her permission, though that in no way excuses the creepiness of watching her sleep without her knowing.

I know. It was really, really creepy. That's when I started bolting my door at night.

Big fan of Joss Whedon and I was moderately disappointed with the pilot ep of Dollhouse. I'm hoping it was a re-shot pilot that the suits had their sticky fingers all over it and that's why it wasn't so hot. I have heard it gets better, and I better see some real Jossness soon because otherwise I won't bother with the show.

And the Edward Cullen RUBBER KEY!!!
I'm sorry, did I miss something? Why would I need a rubber key?
O.K. I admit, I did buy a Twilight t-shirt at Hot Topic. My husband asked if they "carded" me when I walked in to make sure I was young enough to shop there (I am 41). Jackass, yes he is.

My first thought was "Ah! It's part of the Cullen Automobile Sabotage for Abusive Overprotective Boyfriends Kit!" and then I remembered that key holders can be made of rubber and became sad...

Dear Cleo

I don't want to come off as a stalker [with an opening like that, you start to get that little creepy feel, eh?] but I work 3rd shift at an apartment complex as security and almost NOTHING goes down. I have mobile internet, and I just wanted to let you know that you've kept me awake and making me laugh out loud way too many times [and sometimes old people creep down to check their mail at 3am and think I'm high.]
I just wanted to say that I've pretty much been through all of your Cleoland Wiki thing. You've been promoted to one of My Heros [followed by my mom and the creator of my usual blog http://www.melodramatic.com] as you have provided me with endless lolz, not to mention converted me from a silly srs bsns Twifan to an lolfan.

Thanks a bunch

I thought of that, and of you today. This guy I had the barest of contacts with kept emailing me photos. Harmless ones, of landscapes and stuff, but it still felt really weird, because he was sending them just to me. And I'd felt weird giving him my email address in the first place, and only did it because it seemed impolite not to. So after remembering what you said about trusting your instincts, I responded and told him to stop. I think (hope) he'll listen.

Oh, wow, thanks.

On an unrelated topic but
my husband has stolen your book from me. I am trying to take it back but it's turned into a tug of war. Now there's 2 bookmarks in it.
Just wanted to share that we are enjoying your book at my house.

mskatej said what I was thinking, here (http://mskatej.livejournal.com/295202.html?thread=10621730&format=light#t10621730).

And no, I did not miss the token male "dolls" - but that's a drop in the bucket of sexist fail that is the entire rest of the show. The "dolls" are being purchased for more than eye candy - the purchase options include sex and therefore manages to combine prostitution *and* rape (because their minds are blanked, how can they possibly give consent?) in a very unlovely package. And yes, I get that he's saying it's wrong, and The Dollhouse is not supposed to be a fine institution or in any way the good guys, but any faith I may have had that the trope was going to be subverted was severely undermined by such things as the multiple scenes of scantily clad (female) "dolls" in titillating poses or gyrating on the dance floor, etc. etc. And yes, we can only hope that that was the result of Fox's meddling (as I am assuming were the horrible commercials with Summer Glau and Eliza Dushku saying, "We're created just for you... we'll do whatever you want"). But you know what? I don't really care. If Joss can't get Fox to air his shows without messing with them, then he should just go to another network already. I don't want to watch a show that slaps me across the face with its pilot, in the hopes that 7 episodes later he'll kiss it and make it better.

I'm beginning to think that Joss has an abusive relationship with Fox, and the fans perpetuate/buy into this by continuing to support his creative projects on the network. And we also have an abusive relationship with Joss, ourselves. We always hope that this time it'll be different.

I used to think Buffy was a feminist show. In retrospect it is very problematic in a lot of ways. Lip service to feminist ideals doesn't make up for anti-women execution.

[identity profile] arby-m.livejournal.com 2009-02-18 04:50 am (UTC)(link)
It's up to you but.. if I weren't a Joss fan from way back, I would never ever have even considered it.

Plus, I'm sure your flist will let you know if it ever gets good.
