I find it pretty self-aggrandizing when authors compare their work to classic literature, especially when there are as many weird social and gender/sex issues as there are in the Twilight books. Bella is absolutely not a positive role model for girls, especially teenage girls. The way she loses her sense of self as she enters into her relationship with Edward is really very disturbing. She's an excellent proxy for the reader, but there's a difference between being a proxy and being a role model.

Jane Eyre, on the other hand, is a great role model. She has a fantastic character arc, where she goes through great change, and yet maintains her personality. She is a different Jane at the end of the book, but still Jane.

By the way, have you seen the most recent movie version of it? With Ruth Wilson and Toby Stephens? (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0780362/) It's excellent.

And what I love about Jane is that she's stronger by the end, whereas it's Rochester who's humbled. And yet they're both better people, so it's not like it was a zero-sum competition.

I haven't seen the new version yet, I keep meaning to--so many icons of it floating around. : )

Exactly. None of them get the short end of the stick for being the other's romantic interest. They are characters who happen to love each other.

You should. It's a really great adaptation. It's less formal (i.e. the sexiness is upped) than other adaptations, but it's still very true to the characters. And Toby Stephens is an absolutely top-notch Rochester.

Butting in here, but I saw that movie version. My friend rented it off Netflix and showed it to me, and then I got the DVD for her for her birthday. We watched it quite a few times after that.

Although she has a much greater love for it than I do, I liked it so much. The beginning childhood scenes threw me off with their artistic quality, since it was quite a difference from the rest of the film (all I really remember is heavy-handed symbolism and RED EVERYWHERE). The rest of the film, though... so good. So. Good.

And Toby Stephens... can I get an "unf"?

Yeah, the childhood scenes are pretty rough. The Helen character (the girl who dies) usually gets pretty short shrift in movie adaptations, and that lessens a lot of the impact of those school scenes. Movies/miniseries can't spend a lot of time in those early chapters, though, given the format.

But, yes! Toby Stephens! Unf. Everything he says in that Rochester voice of his is swoon-worthy. And that scene at the very end! Near the river! Which I will say absolutely nothing more about. But it's amazing.

Ok, I gotta know. Am I the only one who immediately thinks of Monty Python and the Holy Grail when the camera keeps dramatically cutting back and forth between Jane and Rochester before their first meeting? Every time I see it I think of John Cleese dramatically running up to a castle for ten minutes while the guards just stand there. Jane walking! Rochester galloping!

I really love this adaptation, but I can't help laughing at that part.

Also, I third the Toby Stephens Admiration. Indeed.
