I'm hearing we might have some snow come in, but other than that, the storm last night wasn't so bad. A lot of wind, a lot of rain, no actual tornado here--nothing worse than a dinged-up patio swing. (Seriously, it's a free-standing swing with a canvas cover, and the cover is now blown all to hell.) I did lose the internet for a while, but it was back by this morning.

In a completely unrelated event, by the way, my keyboard and mouse fell over dead for no particular reason (when I rebooted as an attempt to figure out what was wrong: "KEYBOARD FAILURE"), so I'm currently working on borrowed spares. Boo.

A smattering of linkspam so I don't get too far behind )

Good news and bad news: the tornado bypassed us with little more than half an hour of lightning and some hard rain. Unfortunately, it turns out that nothing will ever make me happy, because my reaction was "Worst. Tornado. EVER." My sister has been bringing home loaves upon loaves of bread, including ciabatta, baguette, and Pullman loaf, because she's in bread-baking class now at the Culinard. This would be an extremely good thing except for the fact that we can't figure out how to eat it all. My mother didn't get one job she was looking at, but it turned out that the job was kind of sketch--I mean, it was on the up-and-up and all, but it turns out that some of the employees aren't entirely happy there. She's got another job offer she's looking at, but--given the kind of institution it is--they move slow as Christmas. (All will be revealed if she gets the job.) Meanwhile, I'm actually looking at a job at the same place, and it terrifies me. This is the kind of neurotic you're dealing with, folks.

Also, I went out with the Lovely Emily and the boys and saw V for Vendetta again. It was funny, because I was the only one who had already seen it, and I'm not sure anyone else even had any idea what it was about. Like, not even that it was the least bit political. We didn't talk about the movie at all before we went, either. Happily, I think everyone liked it and was very affected by it. Also, stuff blew up good.

A meme I'd been meaning to do that was making the rounds of writers' blogs: Ten Things I Have Learned About Writing. Read more... )

Oh, sweet God. I am in Honey Bunches of Pain right now. I'm having some weird clutching pain in my stomach--I can't classify it as anything in particular, like a cramp or a stomachache. Actually, if I had to guess, I'd say it felt like the onset of a really bad stomach bug (PLEASE GOD NO). And as if that weren't bad enough, we're apparently going to have F4/F5 category tornadoes in the area tomorrow--the weather's already starting to look grim tonight, so if I go missing, it probably means my internet is out. Pray for us that nothing gets struck by lightning this time.

Arrrrgh, tornadoes. Well, that at least explains why it was EIGHTY DEGREES the other day. In fact, things are just going from bad to worse--the entire roof has to be replaced now (which, fortunately, we can have done for $500 total, what with insurance), and the pool liner very likely will have to be replaced as well. Oh, and the air conditioning switch, whatever precisely that is, will also cost $500. We discovered this when the downstairs AC went dead over the weekend, prompting my mother to invoke the service contract. On a Sunday, no less. So they came out that day, and fixed it free of charge--it's just that replacement parts aren't included in that. There's probably some other calamity I've (blessedly) forgotten, as well. Sigh.

And this won't mean anything to anyone but the BPALers, but I have now started wearing High John the Conqueror for reasons that will be apparent if you're familiar with it at all.

And for those of you worried about the linkspam, it--and [livejournal.com profile] dailydigestnews--is coming back. I've just got such a pileup at this point that I'm going to have to sit down and actually sort it out, and I have some pressing things I have to take care of before I can do that.

Current Nancy Drew: The Clue/Mystery/Secret of the Tolling Bell. It's on my bed and I can't see the title from here. Pick one.

Stupid storms. Bad day all around, really, in terms of future prospects--can't really talk about it until it's settled, but they're not my prospects, I'll put it that way. Just prospects that affect me. Oh, and the shower doors are kind of half-fixed (expensively, at that) and half-permanently fucked (sarcastic yay).

It's the kind of day where I'm actually kind of hoping that the power goes out for an hour or so, because that means the brand-new carton of chocolate/almond/marshmallow ice cream will melt and be up for grabs. I mean, it'd be a shame if we wasted all of it, right...?

Oh, and I don't really have time to talk about it (more lightning; one outage already), but we're all livid over the church fires thing. OUT OF MY ALMA MATER(S)!
