In which I bring you a Cascade o' Remakes

A few things:

I think I gave the wrong impression when I talked about my closet the other day--it's not Confessions of a Shopaholic up in there; it's filled with fifteen (or more) years of cheap junk. The "purses and handbags" are, like, $20 woven satchels or totes from a couple of local places, not $1500 Prada bags or something. And I have a habit of stashing away old odds and ends--the scarf nobody wanted, the ribbons from opened gifts or old dresses, the old green vase cluttering up the kitchen counter, the beads from the necklace that broke--and so most of the accumulated stuff didn't even cost me anything. And many of the "boxes of clippings" are shoeboxes, not gigantic crates or anything. The list was more of an exercise in "Wow, when you put it in words like that, I really do have a lot of ancient and pointless crap I could stand to get rid of," not "Look at my decadent materialism!"

However, if you were interested in the historical costume coloring books, they are from Bellerophon Books and roughly $5 each.

Re: Yesterday's Secret Life: The rocking chair (sitting unheralded in the back of one of the pictures) was one of the smaller reader gift/mail items that I've been holding onto until I can work them in. Also, I don't know why Anna's arm kind of looks jaundiced in the picture. Also-also: two icons!

(I TOLD YOU GUYS The Littlest Edward was tiny, didn't I?)

I just wanted to say that I was in my local waldenbooks today, minding my own business, when I happened to look over at the corner of the cash desk, and what do I see but a PILE-O-Littlest Edward dolls. Seriously a pile. Not even arranged nice or anything. I should have taken a picture, but I was so torn between laughing, and going "awwww The Littlest Edward," and wanting to smack whatever employee laid them out in a pile that I forgot too.

And then I realized that I spend way the hell too much time on the internet, and was saddened that I had no one in real life to share this with.

The end.

Daaaaaamn there are even MORE alternate endings? I would have liked to see the Deadpool one. Maybe then he wouldn't have freaked the @%!# out of me quite so much. We did get two 'endings' though, one after all the producer/director credit things, one at the veeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeery end of the movie. So that was nice. Otherwise? Very very bad movie with chunks of sheer awesome.

I support "Cameron!Avatar" as the standard reference to that movie.

I get a flash of murderous rage every time I see Avatar before I realize that we're talking about James Cameron's sci-fi movie and not a soul-sucking bastardization of an amazing animated show.

[identity profile] internal666.livejournal.com 2009-04-29 07:35 am (UTC)(link)
Seconded, not because of any murderous rage (Which is... A little worrying, please don't kill me in my sleep), but out of pure confusion. It wasn't until I read the Airbender comment that I realized that it was abou James Cameron's Avatar and not the Shyamalan lulz-tacular.

If they really have to remake Drop Dead Fred could they at least get someone funny? You know, not a complete arse? I really cannot stand Russell Brand, he's not fit to wipe Rik Mayalls shoes.
They must be getting pretty desperate for money at Universal though.

Unrelated topic, meds question

[identity profile] batmaz.livejournal.com 2009-04-29 02:24 pm (UTC)(link)
I know you're on depression medication and you're very open about it, and I was wondering if I could ask your advice (and the advice of the readers of your blogs as I'm sure many of them are on meds too). I've been taking Citolapram, an SSRI, for 5 days now, and I'm pretty sure I'm feeling worse. I'm 18, and the doctor did say there was increased suicide risk in young people. I'm also experiencing loss of appetite, fidgeting and twitching, and yawning. I had some hypersomnia before, but that may have worsened too. Can the side effects kick in that quickly? (I was feeling them after 2 days, so I don't know if they're placebo because I'm worrying, or a natural worsening of the depression, or if it's really side effects.) I know they say you don't feel an improvment in mood for 4-6 weeks, but do side-effects start earlier than this?

Also, if side-effects are experienced, does this mean if I stick with it that I will definitely experience an upturn in mood in a few weeks? Is this a good sign?

I'm feeling so damn low at the moment, and you were the first person I felt comfortable asking advice for.

Re: Unrelated topic, meds question

[identity profile] cleolinda.livejournal.com 2009-04-29 03:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Actually, the physical side effects are what kick in immediately--the negatives, generally, as your body reacts to the new medication--whereas the benefits actually take a while to build up. I am not a doctor, obvs., but I'd say you're genuinely feeling side effects, and if you're feeling really awful, it doesn't matter why--you need to tell your doctor. The upside here is that the two of you may be able to pinpoint the meds as the cause and do something about that.

The other thing is, if the side effects are this severe (which is not unusual), you need to tell your doctor because the current dosage may be too high, or this may be a bad drug for you in particular. When my doctor and I were experimenting with new dosages a couple of years ago, she wanted to reduce the Zoloft and introduce a little Lamictal as well; I was scared of the Lamictal ("Watch out for a rare but fatal rash") and voted that we just increase the Zoloft a smidge, which she agreed to. Well, more Zoloft, even a tiny bit, turned out to be a REALLY, REALLY bad idea; I pretty immediately fell into one of the worst depressions I've ever had, and Zoloft is also associated with an increased suicide risk. And of course the problem with depression is that it's mental, so you sit there and go, "I feel awful because I'm a loser," not "I feel awful because my medication is wrong." So it took me way too long (several weeks) to figure out that it must have been the Zoloft.

So then we went with her idea, the addition of Lamictal (and a corresponding decrease in Zoloft). And it worked really well for a while. But you have to increase it very, very slowly in very small increments, and at one point, she increased it a bit faster than I really wanted to go, but I increased it anyway, and I had a second bout of really horrible depression.

The reason I'm telling you all this, by the way, is to point out two things: 1) you can have problems with both new drugs *and* dosage level changes of drugs that have worked just fine for years, and that 2) the doctor/patient relationship needs to be an open discussion. Neither of us was always right when it came to figuring out what to do, but we worked it out together, and in order to do that, the patient has to feel confident saying "I'm not comfortable trying that" or "I feel bad and I don't think this is working for me."

And you really do need to talk to your doctor about this ASAP--depression-related suicide is usually the impulse of a really bad moment (as opposed to planned suicide in the case of terminal illness or after criminal wrongdoing, to use two wildly different examples), as far as my understanding goes. It's not a rational response to a situation and so it's hard to predict, even for yourself, so it's important that you go ahead and talk to someone before you unexpectedly get to that point. I personally don't consider suicide to be an option for myself, but at the same time, I have had that really horrible feeling of "I wish I was dead right now"; I just tend to phrase it in terms of "I hope I don't wake up tomorrow." And even after I got to that point, it still took me way too long to tell anyone about it. I spent most of my last semester in college being completely non-functional and failing classes (and also wishing I would just conveniently die naturally and get it over with), which was probably the lowest I've ever been. I'm just saying, I've been there, and I know now that I should have told someone--instead of going to my doctor appointments as normal and faking that I was totally okay because I was too ashamed to let anyone know how badly I'd fucked up.

That's some very teal deer, but what I'm getting at is, I've been there, and I have never regretted telling my doctor that I wasn't comfortable with this or that medication (even when I was wrong--we were at least able to rule a higher dosage out that way). But I have very, very deeply regretted not telling someone sooner when I did feel bad. Best wishes and good luck, seriously.

Random mention of RPattz and "Twilight" in a swine flu article (http://www.vancouversun.com/news/Rocker+Madonna+Twilight+Robert+Pattinson+noted+among+online+swine+fraud+folly/1546507/story.html) that popped up in my news search for Peter Doherty that I thought you might find amusing:

Not all the swine flu/celebrity online chatter is so dire. One prominent website tries to answer the eternal question: Can vampires get swine flu?

Well, Robert Pattinson (or at least the character he plays) can breathe easier these days, as a Yahoo.com reader assures it's unlikely.

"Which Lacks Signficance" tells "Qwyrx" that "vampires would not fall ill as they are immune to human diseases."

So there's no need for Edward Cullen to don a face mask as he spreads his magic throughout the Twilight world.

WHEW. I know I'm breathing easier now.

(And no, Peter doesn't have swine flu. The pic of him with the lady who contracted it is old, 2005ish if I had to guess based on the length of his hair and the jacket he's wearing. Yes, it's a bit frightening that I can date photos of Peter by his hair, I agree).

Yeah, it's like that time when I sat down to read Breaking Dawn and was like, "Omg, you know what I bet she'll do? She'll have Jacob imprint on ANGELA, who ALREADY HAS A BOYFRIEND, for MAXIMUM DRAMA!"

Yeah. Never give Twilight a challenge. Twilight will always kick your ass.

Hi, *waves* somewhat of a lurker/occasional commenter here, LONG time fan, been reading you since way back before the Troy M15M I believe, I recall an entry about a dead bird on the deck or something? Not sure how I got started reading you, but it was way back.

Just wanted to let you know that, by way of a relative of a friend, by plane, train and automobile (I kid, well, sorta) and from all the way out in Iowa (I’m in SC) I have FINALLY managed to get my grubby little fat fingers on your book! And I couldn’t be prouder. I’ve been showing it off all ‘I’ve been reading her blog for years and now she has a BOOK! A real live BOOK! In HARDBACK!’…very very cool indeed-yes, I am a librarian, we get excited over books like that.

A (very belated) Kudos to you! It is lovely and I cannot wait to begin reading it.
