I'm going to see Watchmen tomorrow afternoon (and at some point over the weekend, guest on a podcast), so you might not hear much from me over the next couple of days. Of course, as sure as I say that, I'll post five times. I'm just saying, either one is possible. (I never know what I'll be able to write until I sit down and try to do it. So I have no idea if I'll be able to put up something about Watchmen or not.) I'm finishing up a new Secret Life, but I'm also trying to space them out a bit. Honestly, I've just given up on the idea of getting any actual work done until Monday, but at least I know it, I guess.

I've also been feeling really tired lately--I mean, I know you already know that because I'm always talking about it, but I'm starting to think it's actually a mild bit of depression. You know, that chemical imbalance kind where you feel bad for no specific reason, not an event-related depression. We're getting into spring now, though, so I think it'll lift. I'm just not feeling so great at the moment, is all.

And right as I was putting on the finishing touches, the new Star Trek trailer came out. Enjoy.

Have you considered that you might have dysthymia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dysthymia) (and sorry for linking to wikipedia, but the page on it is pretty good)? It's like chronic depression in some aspects, but it's less intense- you feel sad all the time, basically, but you're not so completely numbed by it that you are unable to function.

I like this diagnosis better than the one I got when I was hospitalized: Mood Disorder Not Otherwise Specified. Seriously, what the hell does that even mean? I did not pay $70,000 for you to make shit up, Hospital Psychiatric Staff (technically I did not pay, my parents did; but I had to listen to them complain about the cost so much that I at least paid in guilt).

Okay, sorry, that was a bit of a tangent. But I hope that you start feeling better, soon! I know from experience that when you're depressed, that seems like one of the stupidest things ever to be told, but I honestly mean it, so I hope that makes up for stupidity of the statement. Depression is also largely affected by the environment, so you should be right about the weather- as soon as it starts getting nicer, your mood should elevate at least a little.

From: [identity profile] sirius20-81.livejournal.com
it could also be seasonal affective disorder (SAD) which is what i suffer from. basically it's a depression brought on by a lack of sunlight, which generally coincides with changes in the seasons, so spring should help snap you out of it.

mine's moderately mild (i don't go on suicidal crying jags, but i have days where i can't do anything but lay in bed) so i just make sure to sit with some bright lights and take some melatonin in the afternoon and it's relatively well controlled (i only have one crying jag a week, as opposed to one a day)

so, hopefully this will lift soon for you. i hate to hear of anyone suffering. take you a box of tag-a-longs, get a beach chair and soak in some sun. hope it helps, honestly.

I bought a bottle of LUCID for my birthday last November and let me tell you, it kicked my ass. Course I had to do it the movie way first, light it on fire and take it as a shot. The traditional way [slowly drip ice-cold water until it turns a pretty cloudy color], I find is a bit easier to take.

Although if you don't like the taste of black licorice, be prepared to gag.

Also - no hallucinations. Just a pleasant buzz.

i've gotten a 3 different kinds of absinthe in the last few years, all imported legally... kinda. anywho, the first kind was nice, really high thujone level and gave me a very clean lucid drunk. the second bottle was the hapsburg hardcore, and the name is no lie, it's 89.5% alcohol. it's a very deceptive drunk. you feel fine, so you drink another one, and you still feel fine, so you drink another one, then that one and it's 2 brothers come to find you. the last one i got was a cannibis infused, and it was like the first one, but i got more of a hallucinogenic effect. it's not like i saw or heard things that weren't there, it's that everything seemed just slightly off around the edges of my vision.

Ahhh I saw Watchmen today. I haven't read the book yet either, which is different for me. It was a good movie, in parts an enjoyable movie, but by the time I left the cinema I just wasn't impressed. And with all the hype, I was really hoping to be impressed. For all I know though, it could have been a fantastic adaptation. I hope it is, so the fans will love it. But if it is, I worry for the book, because I've been wanting to be impressed by that as well.

Date: 2009-03-06 03:51 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] cleolinda.livejournal.com
Well, the book is able to do things the movie can't, because it's a comic book deconstructing comic books. You bring a separate medium into it--film--and you lose some of that meta. And the book is wonderfully complex--there's a pirate comic book within the book, a memoir, various documents, magazine/newspaper articles, a missing person case, Dr. Manhattan experiencing the past, present and future simultaneously (I don't know if that's in the movie), all kinds of things. And while they've tried to adapt some of that on the side for the DVD--the pirate comic and the memoir--there's just a medium-within-the-medium quality you can't get outside the book. And that's okay; I think both the book and the movie are valid unto themselves. But the book does have more than the movie and is more complex.

Also just got back home from Watchmen - and I thought it was AMAZING. I love the graphic novel, and could not think of any possible way they could have made a more faithful adaptation. Being a fan and knowing the story, I'm not sure how those who are unfamiliar with it will react, though.

I've never read the story, so maybe that was one thing. But I really just had high expectations based on my friends who have read it, and the trailers...and I felt let down. It wasn't a BAD movie, don't get me wrong. I just think you could have cut an hour out of it and had effectively the same movie, without it putting me to sleep at least 15 times.

Watchman was EPIC. My jaw was on the floor for most of the movie. I loved the visuals, the music, the casting (I came out of the film feeling for Dr. M, Rorschach, and the Comedian-- which I think is a testament to the acting because I didn't really feel that way in the book-- look out for R's final scene in particular), the editing, the general faithfulness to the book, and even the choices they made to adapt it. It was a difficult movie to watch, but that is good for the story (but really- if anyone has issues with violence, get ready to shut your eyes and cover your ears frequently). My only issue was the makeup...I imagine it was a stylistic choice to have it be over emphasized, but it was to the extent of being sloppy. It pretty much worked, but I found it distracting (Sally's hairline, Nixon's nose, etc).

Anyway- can't wait to hear your thoughts, Cleo!

If you've never tried it before, you might want to give some St. John's Wort a try. I had a similar thing during grad school (I spent a lot of time anticipating my next nap), and it did wonders for me. You can get it in most pharmacies, although I had trouble finding it in Walmart at the time.

Be sure to give it a week or two, though - it doesn't work superfast. I was a little dubious (maybe I just got better on my own! It took awhile!), but as soon as I stopped taking them, I noticed a difference again, so I'm pretty sold on it. Although I think with the chemical thing, it's just different for everyone...

Still, worth an over-the-counter try!
