I got mistaken for "nineteen or twenty" yesterday. I turn thirty in December. I'm not sure if this is a good thing or not. You probably want to slap me right now, but--if you're always being mistaken for being a lot younger, it's like you never really feel like you've grown up.

Oh! By the way, if you've told me you're sending something, I haven't received it (unless I came by and told you otherwise). Something weird is going on with our mail, and things either aren't getting to us, or they're taking a really long time. This is disconcerting, to say the least.

(Confidential to the sender of the unexpected t-shirt: I plan on disregarding your instructions and cherishing it forever. : )

[livejournal.com profile] emmileexo: "The government has gotten up to some new form of stupidity and I was hoping you could post it in your next entry. Essentially, they are allowing medical staff and workers to refuse to give a patient an abortion if goes against their conscience, thus meaning that a doctor can refuse to do their job. The wording of the bill is so vague that it can extend to all forms of birth control, so a pharmacist can refuse to give a woman their prescription of the Pill. Even worse, the proposal does not take into account male forms of sterilization, such as condoms or vasectomies. The following link goes to an entry that explains the situation in detail and has links to sites where people can send in emails to protest the proposal. The proposal has a 30 day public comment period, so we only have a month to stop this. The entry: http://naamah-darling.livejournal.com/352794.html. Protest can be sent on this page here."

Let me note here that one of the reasons birth control methods like the Pill are so important is because not all of us take them as contraceptives. Some of us actually take them to treat gynocological disorders like PCOS, for example. So even if you're not pro-choice, contraception isn't even the only thing at stake here.

A backlash just means it's getting popular enough to notice. ;) Also, if I had a nickel for every time someone said cyberpunk or urban fantasy was dead, I'd be buying a house in the Bay Area. (Um, in nickels. Yeah.) And steampunk hasn't even gotten to the level of popularity of those two yet, so I think you've got PLENTY of time.

I know the feeling. My whole life, I've been called young and baby-faced. I turned 30 in June. I get ID'd for cigarettes, clubs, alcohol... you name it all the time. My friends always tell me to take the compliment, but *they* haven't been fishing their ID out of their wallet for the last 12 years straight. Not once or twice.

Every. Single. Time.

So yes, I feel your pain.

I thought I was the only one who felt this way. I often get mistaken for being at least ten years younger than I am (I'm in my late 30s) and recently someone carded me. When I showed him my DL he actually thought it was fake until I showed him another ID - he said he thought I was 20! O__o I used to be carded all the time but that was the first time it had happened in about four or five years.

I certainly don't think I look that young and it was nice to hear (it always is) but ... I always feel weird about it at the same time. (And constantly reminded that I'm nowhere near where I thought I would be at this age ... )

Forgot to add: thanks for that link about the Tarleton Twins! I met him once ages ago when I was little. Way too young to appreciate that I was talking to someone who had been a part of cinema history. But I remember him being very kind to me and my sister.

I'm 32 and still regularly get mistaken for a teenager or college student. I get people come to the door and ask if my parents are home. When I'm out with my husband, people ask if I'm his daughter, or now that my hair is so short, his son (he's only nine years older than me!). Very annoying.

I had/have the opposite problem- when I was in my early teens and out shopping with my Dad, some people (with no eyes -_-) assumed that we were married. Part of the reason was that my Mum wasn't with us- I guess they saw what they wanted to see.

That happened to me once, too. I was in the car with my dad on the way to go camping, when we stopped at a stoplight next to another car. The woman in the car asked us if we were going camping, and when we said yes she replied that she remembered going camping as a newlywed, too.

Ehheh.

I get excited when I -don't- get carded.

I totally know what you mean about not feeling like you're grown up. For a few months, I tried dressing in business casual when I went out to work, not just jeans and a T-shirt.

All of my life I've been mistaken for much older, the weekend I turned 13 I went downstairs in a restaurant to the bar...both guards ignored me.

So now with this history, when I am often mistaken for younger, I automatically assume its because I'm acting immature.

This sort of thing has been going on at least since I was 20, and a couple years ago I got carded for fireworks, the legal age for which is 16! I am told that I'll appreciate it when I'm 40, but I want to appreciate things NOW.
