Date: 2008-06-06 10:31 am (UTC)On one hand, I work in a book store and the first thing I get after "I'm looking for a book for my son/daughter/nephew..." is "What would you recommend for such-and-such an age?" And it'd give me an easier time of it by just saying "oh, our 5-8's are over here" or whatever.
On the other hand I learned to read at a very early age and adored it. My reading level was the highest in my year until they stopped testing us! So I usually ask if they know what the kids reading level is. I used to hate it when I got "age appropriate" books for a present.
So really the bottom line is that the guidelines would sell books well, but those said books would probably sit on the shelf in the kids room. I would put that maybe people need to know their kids better, but I have no idea what my cousins like and continually fail at presents for them, so I have no legs to stand on whatsoever!
