So today it rained not men, but icy slush. I don't think it's going to get quite cold enough this week to snow (and stick), but people are running around screaming and rioting in the grocery stores anyway, which means that I should be fully prepared to see Cloverfield on Friday (huzzah!).

Oh, and I finished Girl Sleuth last night, which was great. I should talk about it--and a ton of other books--more later, but suffice it to say, I want to read both the old-school Nancy Drew pre-rewrite originals and Mildred Wirt's Penny Parker books now.

Cloverfield was really, really awesome, Cleo. I think you'll like it. Without spoilerizing anything, they did a fantastic job of character building via the "used tape" concept, the monster was awesome in a not-scary-but-not-cheesy-and-totally-destructive way, and Lizzie Caplan, who was the "dyke" Janice Ian in Mean Girls, steals the entire movie even though she's one of the lesser characters.

I was deeply satisfied, and I am hard to please, haha.

(P.S. Have you been keeping up on KoL? Did you play Crimbo this year?!)

I did hear that the "used tape" aspect--I won't say how, just in case--did become interesting. Good to hear that it's good!

I didn't actually play Crimbo this year--I checked the Advent calendar, but only after weeks of inactivity, at which point that I realized my two multi accounts had died. Woe.

Uh, I thought Katie Holmes was fired from Dark Knight.

I got the impression that WB was unimpressed with the BB junket becoming the Tom and Katie show and suddenly Katie wasn't coming back for DK.

Aww, my respect for Johnny Depp was already high, but now it's increased tenfold. What a sweet thing for him to do.

I know it's cliché to say "I love Johnny Depp", but it's true. I mean, he's very talented, obviously, but he also seems to be such a GOOD person. That's what I love the most.

I wonder if Brad Renfro knew how much people admired some of his work. Poor guy.

It don't think it's possible for Johnny Depp to be more awesome than he is.

Also, apparently this has really helped the black-footed ferrets, particularly Nora Roberts' $5000 matching-grant."

You know, that is not the most well-phrased sentence I've ever written. It makes Nora Roberts sound like a black-footed ferret.

"Like the Bravia commercial, but for real."

I know you didn't write that, Cleo, but it bugs me, because the Bravia commercial was for real. It wasn't CGI or anything.

Crimbo was a bit of a letdown anyway, other than a few items revolutionizing Softcore speedruns and a new outfit / tattoo... So no big deal, haha.

I'm seriously happy about the BAFTA nominations solely because The Lives of Others is so well represented. It's nice to see a non-English language film get recognised in best picture, best director, leading actor and original screenplay. Even if it will likely at most get best non-English language picture.

If Ulrich Mühe (leading actor) did win the award of course it would be awarded posthumously. I wonder how many times that has happened. And how many times of those it has been genuine, rather than winning almost as a memorial.

...

Oh. Yeah. I see. Stupid English language.

Edit: By that I mean it's only on reading this comment that I realised it doesn't say "is still discovered".

I haven't been able to access any boing-boing pages for the past week or more, so I completely forgot to comment on that. Every Bravia advert so far has been 100% genuine. That's kind of half the point.

I don't even understand why The Lives of Others is a nom. Not that it isn't amazing - cause it was - but it won last year's Oscar, so I don't understand how it's even able to get BAFTA noms. It came out in 2006.

Did not not come out in Britain till '07?

So glad about Rent closing - I absolutely detest that musical. Although now every Rent fan I know will be in tatters.

The iTunes movie rental idea is kinda cool. Mostly cause I got a 80G iPod classic for Christmas and have 70G free. I need something to take up space.

Yeah, it wasn't released in the UK until much later. I want to say April? Sometime around then certainly. Which makes me doubly impressed that people remembered it enough.

(Hmm, I vaguely recall nattering back and forth with you about it last year during Cleo's Oscar blogging. Or am I imagining that.)
