'New Moon' Smashes 'Dark Knight's' Opening Day Record!

Which means it's already made a shade just under one hundred million ($100M), which was my original entire-weekend prediction. (ETA: Or wait, the midnight screenings are included? $72M is a bit better. Although that's still more in 24 hours than Twilight made its entire first weekend.) I'm officially revising my estimates up to $170M now. (Well, in that case, let's take it down to $140M.)

You know, I'm not surprised, exactly. It was tracking above TDK all week, and it's already the highest-grossing advance ticket seller and midnight opening. And it may be that the mainstream won't turn out the rest of the weekend. But the official @Twilight account on Twitter has been RTing messages from fans saying that, as of mid-afternoon yesterday, they had already seen the movie four and five times. Four and five times. I understand, sociologically, psychologically, emotionally, financially, why it's happening. I'm not surprised, precisely. But I'm kind of astounded.

Five times? I mean, the closest I ever came to that was seeing Fellowship of the Ring with friends and then with family within a forty-eight hour period.

Damn.

I've never seen a movie that many times, I've only seen TTT a couple of times but that's it heh.

Four and five times?! It's only been in theaters for a day. I mean, I saw TDK three times in the theater, but that was over a couple of weeks. On the plus, parents can answer the age old question of "Do you know where your teenage daughters are?"

Yep. Teenage daughters are back home after seeing it 2x and the Twi-moms are out seeing it 4 to 5x. ;)

I don't know what to think. On one hand, I loathe TDK with a passion. On the other hand... I don't think I should be happy about a Twilight movie breaking any of its box office records.

I'll just sit here and be confused.

I believe that $73 million includes the midnight showings, I think it usually does. It's going to depend on what the numbers are today as to whether it smashes TDK.

I knew it would be big. I didn't think it would be THIS big.

And before that, West Side Story.

Twilight is all about the addictive quality of yearning--the more you have, the bigger the gaping well of need you have to fill. It's got repeat-viewings built in.

This kind of scares me. As in, a lot.

I'd like to imitate Friends whenever they go on and say nothing but 'why' for about half a minute but the thing is, I know why. Because it's Twihards and Twimoms and the world's ending, that's why!

Seriously, I think the movies I've seen four or five times all in all I can count on two hands.

TDK was a crap movie too. Audiences love mediocre films!

On a good note, perhaps Hollywood might actually start making more films that appeal to women rather than the 15- to 29-year-old male demographic. Maybe more women involved in the making of films might get jobs!

That was sort of my vague comfort as well -- that studios will remember that there are female audiences to make movies for, instead of the unrelenting sausagefest they have been recently.

However, it's likely that studios being studios, what we will get is an unrelenting string of movies starring passive and agencyless Mary Sues, which I can't say I regard as any better.

I don't know where my God is, to tell you the truth. She must be hangin' around the Carribean with the rest of them on vacation. It's the only way I can justify the fact that this movie's made over 100 milliion bucks. Though I envy them, as they are in a nice, warm place. Much better than the vast coldness of space I think.

The only reason I might watch a movie in theaters more than once is because I've sneaked in to see it when I'm bored. No matter how much I love a movie I will never pay more than once to see it. That's some weird dedication.
