A few things:

1) "Behold the sparklecock" was my 3000th entry on LJ. Of course it was.

2) Yes, I also saw the shower curtain.

3) We did buy a new dishwasher.

4) It will be here... in three weeks. Yaaaaay.

5) The electricians are now coming early next week so I have time to move all the furniture (ugh) and clean out behind it (UGH).

6) I went to the Dell site and mentally (MENTALLY) spent about $1500 on the laptop of my dreams (plus crazy amounts of warranty/service plans), so I'm thinking I may put that purchase off until I've actually sold a project (I am a big believer in going hard or going home, especially if I intend this computer to last the way the other two did). What I'd like to do is get the first three chapters of the first Black Ribbon book put together as a proposal over the next couple of weeks--I swore I'd try to avoid writing on a deadline ever again (as in, let me sell you the project and THEN finish it), but: moneys. And there's a short story or two I could finish as well. So there's that. If I have to work on the family computer all night after everyone's in bed, that would be... pretty much the least impressive "hardship" ever. I can hack that.

7) I got an iPhone, bitches! Yeah... I tried the rice thing everyone suggested, and... I don't know how long I was supposed to do that, but... yeah. Wash/rinse/spin cycle, and then a while in the dryer on high. My phone was about six years old anyway, so we went to the AT&T store to see if they'd let me upgrade now instead of in November when my contract is up, and they... magically had no problem with this. If I'd gotten a normal phone, it would have been two or three hundred dollars, I don't know--but because they're apparently trying to sell off their old stock of "lesser" iPhones, I upgraded to a 3G for $99. I mean, I bought a protection plan and a purple and pink CandyShell case for it, but... that was it, $99.

Yeah, so... I'm still figuring out how all it works.

8) What are your favorite (FREE) apps? So far I've gotten Google, Wikipedia, and TwitterFon; I hear that Shazam is also good. I just haven't sat down and browsed the hell out of everything yet. Anything I should look for?

I have an iPod Touch but it uses the same apps as an iPhone. The free apps, I have are: Livejournal, Facebook, free Solitare and Minesweeper (because I'm retro), a language translator (that I've never needed), Conversion ap, Mahjonng, Mini Piano, Google Earth, Chess, Tube map, and Bubble Wrap (silly, but addictive).

Apps I love:
Shazam
Any game that's free by storm8 (Kingdoms live, Vampires live etc) be warned...these are addictive in the extreme.
Topple - a stacking game somewhat like Tetris.
Skype - a must have if you're pretty much surrounded by wifi... Free calls for the win!
The official lj app - for obvious reasons ;)

I love my iPhone. It's a life saver when you're stuck somewhere & bored to tears (like in line, at the store).

PandoraBox (great for finding apps, and finding when some are on sale)
Y!Messenger (but Yahoo still doesn't allow you to sign in in multiple locations)
Accuweather (cus the iPhone weather app isn't that great)
FML2Go (I'm easily amused)
Battery Status (because the plain 3G doesn't have the indicator that the 3GS has)

Favorite Apps, of the free variety:

Now Playing - the best movie app for the iPhone, in my very biased opinion. (The developer and I were in college together, although I didn't find this out until I started doing iPhone apps myself.)
Wikipanion - app for viewing wikipedia articles in a phone-friendly format
The Weather Channel - kind of obvious. But it has the hour-by-hour view, which is convenient on a phone. Much easier than trying to surf to their website on the phone.
Facebook - likewise obvious
AIM - AOL Instant Messenger. I use this instead of texting people, for the most part. The new version will even pop up a dialog box when the app is closed if someone messages you.
NPR News - a brand new app from NPR, which lets you see the news, listen to the radio version of the same news, or listen to any NPR station live. Also lets you listen to NPR podcasts. Very awesome.
NYTimes - The New York Times app. Used to crash constantly but they finally fixed all that and now it's awesome.
FML - Fuck My Life app.
SnapTell - Snap pictures of book covers, and the phone will recognize the book and look it up for you in various bookstores. Also works with CDs, DVDs, and video games.
Barnes & Noble - Same deal as SnapTell, but specific to B&N's store.
Midomi - Same idea as Shazam, but less accurate. However, it can recognize whistling and humming, unlike Shazam. If Shazam can't identify the song, I try Midomi.
Pandora - same idea as the website, but in a convenient iPhone format.
Stanza - a free ebook reader. Can buy books through the app, or read pirated ones that you upload from your computer.
Skype - Make phone calls to other Skype users if you have a wifi connection. Won't work through the cellular network because AT&T is paranoid about loss of business.
Lexulous - Same as the Facebook app. You can start games on FB and continue them on the phone. Very convenient.

You see, I was on the smallest plan possible, and It was still way more minutes than I could use. (Im just not a phone talker). But I still need a phone, so I thought I would break the contract and switch to a go-phone instead of paying money for minutes I /never/ use.

Well, At&t didnt like that I wanted to break my contract. So they made me a itty-bity custom plan for super cheap that I just couldnt refuse. Then I mentioned my phone was glitching so I also got an early upgrade. And for some reason unknown to me, I also got credited $70 to my account.

So all in all, I got a new shiny phone for free, $70 and and ultra-custom plan. Plus, I didnt have to pay a fee for breaking the contract early.

Seriously. I LOVE AT&T NOW. *Sends them cookies*

BTW, not to rub salt in your wounds, but do get a cover for your iPhone. I have a Speck one--they're rubbery but solid, and I've dropped my iPhone on concrete without damage.

(They also have waterproof ones out there, just FYI. ;)

I also recommend getting one of those films that goes over the front of the phone, directly on the screen. They're like $10 for 2, and have saved the front of my phone from many a deep scratch.

I love the Pandora and Stanza apps. Pandora, as you may well know, is just internet radio, and Stanza is a book-reading app. You can use it to download and read books on your iPhone, some of which are free. Both apps are free to download.

So I can't read your entry without putting my two cents in about Dells.

This is just a personal experience scenario so take it as you will. My parents bought me a brand new dell laptop after my first year of college. I had this old old laptop beforehand... it had to be nearly 8 years old by the time it died (during finals) of my freshman year so it was a big blessing to be handed this brand new laptop.

Boy did I take care of this thing. I'd turn it off when I was done using it, I'd unplug it if it looked like we were going to get bad weather, and two weeks after I had it it burst into flames. I shit you not. I was able to get it out, no damage to my house, but the computer was fried. After calling Dell and sitting on hold for a very long time I was able to get them to send me a replacement computer.

Said replacement computer is now sitting in a closet because it pretty much died after 1.5 year of usage. It would get so hot it would shut off, it was a mess.

I got a MacBook after that and haven't had a problem *knocks on wood* in almost three years. I adore this computer so so much. And I refuse to ever get a Dell again. The end.

A lot of times when laptops start overheating like crazy consistently it's because the fans is dusty and gross. Cleaning it usually fixes the problem. Probably no help to you now since you have a new happy laptop, but still a thought.

My mobile company in Australia just strated selling the iPhone and they sent us a demo phone loaded with music and games so we could demo it properly (demo- hah!) and we just play with the games all day.

Our addictive, competative game? Flight Control. We play it obessively and compare scores with a terrifying ferocity. Also, Word Fu is fun.

The 3G is just as good as the 3GS, I think, especially since they updated the softwear. And, cheaper!
