I have a gigantic headache and have been away from my desk most of the day--which means, in turn, that I'm hellishly behind on things--so we'll only have a quick essential linkspam today. Because I have a feeling that if I don't post the Christian Bale thing, I'm going to be getting a lot of emails about it.

Only, I mean. He's a brown character playing the "villainous" character against the supergroup of white kids.

I recall that Bale also went off on a reporter on the set of Metroland, causing costar Emily Watson to give him the nickname "Tanty" (for the tantrum he threw).

I would see Dev Patel as more of a Sokka type character. He seems more laid back than angry and intense. Oddly, in that picture I'd say McCartney looks more like Zuko in terms of harsher facial features.

Though I'm happy Dev is getting work, but I think he would be better as Sokka. However, the day they recast the other characters will be the day I might regain whatever faith I had for the movie to be good which isn't much.

What I am interested in is this Jessica Jade Anders person. It doesn't say who she's playing, only that she's a protagonist. Is she Suki? Yue? Or are they going to involve Toph in the first movie?

So, Zuko the chap from ersatz-Indonesia is going to be played by a British actor of Gujarati ancestry.

This sounds more like a "the fans are getting pissed let's put someone brown in there somewhere" reflex than a considered casting choice.

Yep, I was totally thinking Patel strikes me as more of a Sokka - he's lanky and cute like that. But McCartney seemed like the worst casting choice to me (blonde!!!) so...anything to get rid of him, pretty much.

This is the movie with a casting director who said lederhosen come from Belgium and kimonos from Korea. Cultural sensitivity isn't exactly her strong point.

I'd just like to extend a very mature raspberry to all the folks who said yelling at the studio wouldn't make a difference in the Avatar casting, so we should all just lie down and take it. Sure, they're still doing it wrong, but they did make a change. Which shows the yelling counts for something.

Oh, I totally agree. I'm sure McCartney's a crappy actor, too - I've only ever seen him in a Hannah Montana episode. Just in that particular picture linked with the article, with the darker hair, I can picture Zuko's scar on his face pretty well.

Patel would be fun as Sokka. I get that vibe from him. I would just wonder about if he can be smirky enough when telling (awesome) bad jokes.
