I would like to point out that there is a Best Actor psychopath precedent here--Anthony Hopkins won Best Actor for Silence of the Lambs with far less screen time (something like 20-25 minutes?). That said, it's really about the field you're playing in a given year, and it's also true that a performance memorable or substantial enough to compete in the Best Actor race could therefore steamroll the Supporting Actor race. (Which is why it's even more surprising that Anthony Hopkins won in that category, given that the character's screen time really made him more of a supporting actor, but it was a performance that completely dominated the movie. Which is exactly what I would say about Heath Ledger's Joker--just immediately iconic, and that's aside from the tragedy involved. And that's why I'm going to be very interested to see how this all shakes out.) And given the Mickey Rourke/Sean Penn/Frank Langella Best Actor talk at this point, Supporting Actor would be the smartest place to campaign. Does all this sound completely cold and mercenary? Yup. But there's a point where the Oscars have little to nothing to do with the merits of the movies themselves and everything to do with the way the campaigns appeal to a small, specific group of voters. You and I aren't voting for them, after all, and we're not trying to decide which was the best movie or performance this year; we're trying to predict what the Academy will vote for.

Watchmen: the change I've heard about is actually a good thing, since the part they're altering was always kind of goofy in the first place. It would have been fine either way, but I think today's audience would probably just laugh at the original ending.

Pirates: To my mind, PotC:PotC2&3::The Matrix:Reloaded&Revolutions. That is, the first was decent and the sequels were awful.

I agree. It works in the comic but squid monster of apocalyptic doom may not have fared very well on screen.
Just like Gary Oldman half naked in a circus being electric prodded by siamese twin midgets while the joker shows him pictures of his naked half-dead daughter may not have worked in the Dark Knight either.
Well maybe it would have...seeing as Nolan killed Rachael and Two Face off in one shot.

'Anthony Hopkins won Best Actor for Silence of the Lambs with far less screen time (something like 20-25 minutes?)'

More like 16.

Hopkins pushed to be put out there for Best Actor rather than Best Supporting, his reasoning being that it would be too easy to win Supporting. His agent thought he was crazy, and indeed the favorite to win that year was Nick Nolte for The Prince of Tides. Against all odds — the genre of the film, its February release, not to mention some media fuss over increased violence in entertainment — Hopkins and pretty much everyone else who was nominated for Silence won.

Okay, now I'm just even more impressed. And yeah, it's one of three movies to win the big five--which is even more amazing when you consider how badly horror/suspense tends to do at the Oscars. I guess sometimes things just really come together, who knows. (Especially when you read things like how it was originally going to star Gene Hackman and Michelle Pfeiffer.)
