Confidential to a good friend of mine, since I don't want to jinx it by sending it myself:

Also, while I was at TV Tropes the other day, I noticed the Cloverfield page. The "Darwin" bit isn't actually attributed to me (and who knows, maybe I'm not the only person who came up with it), but it turning up there is yet another proud moment in my life.

And then EW and MTV roll around on the floor catfighting.

(In case you were wondering what the Beedle the Bard thing was about in the previous entry, there's more down below in the spam proper, but it was actually announced and put up for pre-order just this morning [because it's Harry and JKR's birthday]. That's why you've never heard about it going on sale before: it didn't until today. And that's why the pre-order bestseller rankings are so funny.)

think it's, I have a hard time with that one because to me you have this kid, sure, he's a hundred and something, but at the same time he's also seventeen and it's the first time he's been in love. And he fully recognizes that he does things wrong, he's very aware of that. Edward at the beginning of Eclipse goes too far one direction. In the middle he's like, I'm screwing this up, I'm doing this wrong, I'm not being fair. He goes too far in the other direction. He never quite finds the balance because he's so black or white about everything. But he has only the best of intentions pretty much at all times, and to think of him as either mean or controlling or having any kind of neg- wanting to impact Bella's life in a negative way is really not how his character is.

I dunno, I think that's a decent enough explanation considering it was a rapid-fire Q&A session.

It's actually this part that bothered me, So I think that people sometimes will go out looking for the negative when really if they gave them the right intentions, I think they are understanding characters better. But it is hard to read.
I think it's weird for her to say people go out looking for the negative, because I for one, didn't read these books just so that I could hate them. I read them, and then I was seriously creeped out. Then she says it's hard to read and I mean, wouldn't that be her own fault, if she's the writer? For a rapid fire Q&A I could see how she might not explain too clearly, but I do have some issues with the explanation she gives. Honestly though, I've done it so many times I'm kind of sick of it now. Edward will always still be creepy to me for his extremes. It still comes off as someone with an unhealthy mind rather than just not being too sure what to do because it's his first shot at love.

I'm glad I'm not alone on that... I recognize why the books are so popular and don't look down on that, but they, well, creep me out also.

I found this reader's letter in the last issue of Entertainment Weekly put it well:

Please don't be so anxious to name the next Harry Potter series. Harry Potter emphasizes the importance of loyalty to your friends and family. Twilight emphasizes the importance of slavish devotion to a controlling boyfriend and detachment from humanity. The fact that so many female readers are latching on to this as a romantic ideal leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

And I agree pretty strongly with the assertion that the romance is intelligent that one letter-writer makes - it seems a very straight forward tale of young obsession.

Ah, well, I enjoyed them a lot, and somehow it went sour for in Book III. Mary-Sue wankery. But as someone who read Anne Rice obsessively from the ages of 9 - 15, who am I to talk? *Grin*

Heh, I wonder how that was received by others. Almost everytime I see something like that, someone else, a fangirl, is also there resorting to ad hominem attacks on anyone who has a negative opinion in the slightest. I enjoyed them too, even though a lot of the time I was sitting there going, "Wait, what?". The third one basically broke the camel's back for me, that's when I basically wanted to set my book on fire.

This reads awfully close to what someone in an actual emotionally abusive relationship might say about their partner. "It makes me sad that my friends only want to see the bad things about him. He's really not like that, I mean, I know he comes off that way, but you just don't know him the way I do..."

Do you read the books by any chance? It's easy to look at it that way, but Meyer tends to put all of those things under the disguise of romance. There's actually something I've been reading in the leaks that bothered me too, but I won't elaborate for the sake of anyone that doesn't want to be spoiled.

I don't, no - just stunned at the similarity her own remarks had, let alone whatever the dynamic is in the books. I've been half tempted to read them for Entertaining Horribleness Value, but ... yeah.

Romance. Meh grr argh; so much gets cloaked that way and it makes me all Wednesday Smash.
