To be honest, I kind of think it's clear where the next Batman movie is going. I mean, Harvey Dent said it: "The night is darkest before the dawn, but I promise you, the dawn is coming."

The icons remind me of something that probably amused only me during the movie: Batman has a velvet cape.

I first noticed the velvet during the interrogation scene. My first thought was, WTF velvet? Then I thought, oh, I bet they used that because black velvet absorbs more light, and that way, he could stand behind the Joker the whole time without the camera picking him up.

But then I noticed that it was velvet in *every* scene.

I NOTICED THAT TOO. Actually, I didn't notice it until I came home and saw saw some publicity stills on ONTD (http://community.livejournal.com/ohnotheydidnt/25908948.html) with poor Christian Bale in various emo poses. You know. With his black velvet cape. I'd actually figured it was still the "high tech fabric" from the first movie, you know, the memory fabric that could take the shape of wings, and that's probably what it was supposed to be. But in terms of him just walking around, yeah, they probably needed velvet to absorb the light. Or hang unobtrusively. Or look totally fabulous. Either way.

Honestly the more I think about the Batman movie the more impressed I am with Heath Ledger and the more depressed I am that he died. It took me a couple days to get to that point. And here I thought my stupid grieving process for him was over with.

Dave and I just saw The Dark Knight (squee!) and this is what we've been discussing. We're all: "Catwoman? Not villainy enough. Poison Ivy? Ehhh...The Penguin? The Riddler? Too campy."

Dave's though of that clay dude I can't remember the name of from the animated series was not bad, but I doubt they'd do it because he's one of the ones that's more science-fiction-y. Hm...

Dude, forget the velvet, Batman has kick-ass boots! If I were CB, I'd get it written into my contract that I get the boots at the end.

...Those emo shots are totally in need of macros. Especially the kneeling one - "The voices in my head told me to!" or something equally silly. Heh.

Why does it have to be a villain? Bring in Azrael as a flashy, cop-and-public friendly vigilante who publicly vows to bring down the Bat menace---only his adoring public doesn't know that Jean-Paul Valley, the man behind the good PR, is a dangerous psychotic who genuinely wants to be a good hero but has a harder time controlling his violent impulses with each bust.

Of course, Bruce doesn't know that; while suspicious, he's willing to give the new guy a chance. He's still Batman, just with a lower profile---instead of bringing down the mob, he's busting the occasional thief. In fact, one night he comes upon a particularly attractive cat burglar who just barely gives him the slip; the very next day he meets a emerging socialite named Selina who seems very, very familiar. Since neither of them are morons they both quickly figure things out, and with Azrael seemingly taking over his job Bruce starts to think that maybe he can move on from Rachael and start to become human again.

Then someone commits a series of crimes that seem to have no purpose or motive. Everyone's baffled, including Azrael (which doesn't help his mental state) until Bruce realizes that while taken individually the crimes don't make sense, they're all connected. Like a riddle.

The Riddler's trying to lure the Dark Knight out of hiding; he's sharp enough to have realized that Azrael's close to cracking, and the wants the Bat to know it too (and besides, Batman's such a good chess partner). He's not a killer, but if he has to put a certain cat burglar in Azrael's crosshairs to get the Bat's attention...well, so be it.

Once he accepts that Azrael does need to be taken down, the full scope of the problem hits him: while Gordon's on his side, his only other ally is a thief of dubious morality; moreover, he's getting his information from someone who claims his name is E. Nygma and uses question marks as fashion accessories.

But as Azrael finally crosses the line, Batman knows it's going to have to do. There's only room for one Dark Knight in Gotham. One is going to have to go.

Batman: Resurrection. July 2011. Riddle me this, Batman....

I have to say (mild spoiler warning)...I don't know why, probably for the same reason that I adore rainy days, The Empire Strikes Back, and Batman at all for that matter, that I really love Batman's current position re:depressing and hope it never ends. Dammit! Batman can't be happy...happier! Where am I going to go for my hurt/comfort daydreams then?

I kind of expected that the XF movie was going to be awful when they released that clip of Mulder angsting over his sister (again) and Scully yelling at him for it (again) but from the sounds of it, it's gone past awful and into offensive.
