I DO NOT LIKE THE ALICE

I DO NOT LIKE THE OUTFIT

ALTHOUGH IT IS NOT THE WORST ONE IN NEW MOON

THE ONE THAT LOOKED LIKE THE PAINTER'S SMOCK

IN VOLTERRA

MAYBE THE NEXT PROTOTYPE PICTURE WILL BE BETTER

MAYBE I CAN MESS THE HAIR UP

(ETA: Okay, look, people. "I can mess the hair up" means I will be buying it anyway, because I love Alice. If I am really sincerely angry about something, I will not express that in capslock. Capslock is for exaggerating and playing things up. It's not one of the outfits I did like, but I can live with it. I suspect they will fix the hair to be more flipped out and quietly change the picture on the site. It's a cute doll as it is, but it's frustrating, in a not-that-it-really-matters way, to see them get the Galadriel so right and then mess up something as key as the hair--a major Alice feature--on this one and give it one of the less-interesting outfits. People asked me to report my initial gut reaction when I saw it. So I did. But it's okay.)

A quick rundown:

Twilight: Oh God, the new Bella likeness is... no. (I will totally buy the outfit if someone sells it separately.) We're holding steady with the Edward likeness, although the gaze is SUPER INTENSE. Nice suit, though.

Lord of the Rings: Besides the Galadriel, there's a Legolas, but no pictures yet. I still crave the Arwen, even though the dress isn't entirely movie-accurate, because it is pretty.

Firefly: You can see the Inara, but it is sold out. I think they said they'd be doing a different one later.

Prince of Persia: As previously revealed. I would totally go for the Tamina if it was the full princess/priestess outfit with all the veils.

Jonah Hex: Really? Really?

Wow, okay. This comment comes off as really hostile to me, although I don't know if you meant it that way. "You're clearly all about the gothic and fantasy duds if you're Cleolinda" has a really insulting, dismissive tone regarding my tastes, IMO. Again, maybe you didn't mean it that way, which is why I'm telling you how it actually made me feel.

I love a lot of Alice's outfits, particularly from the first movie.

I did not particularly like the outfit they have chosen for this doll. (It doesn't have her trademark ribbon choker either, which I really loved.) I didn't like the loose grey blouse with the red leather gloves at the end of New Moon; I did really like the blue and white layered outfit she's wearing at school in the beginning. I really wanted one of the outfits with more layers--gloves, a scarf, a sweater. And her hair is always flipped out; the hair on this doll doesn't look right at all, and that's one of the trademark Alice features.

You may notice, however, that I said "Maybe I can mess her hair up," which implies that I will, in fact, be buying it anyway, because I do love Alice, and it's very possible the doll looks better in person, or that they'll fix the hair. They have often changed the Twilight dolls from prototype to final product.

Holy crap.

...

Why do you keep reading my comments as hostile? I've been really enjoying your Tumblr, and nice fantasy, gothic, steampunk stuff is what I keep seeing in there. And... I... want opinions because I like learning about what other people think. And I enjoy your opinions and your voice so much that I come to your LJ to comment, even though I have trouble writing what I think.

I though I was being polite. You're killing me here.

AARRGH. I'M ACTUALLY CRYING. AT LEAST I'M NOT DOING IT IN PUBLIC THIS TIME, BUT I THOUGHT I'D STOPPED THAT. ARRRRRGHHG.

I'm sorry. I went back and read what you said again. I think "haters gonna hate" set me off for some reason, and I saw everything after it through that lens, and missed "which are pretty," and I apologize for that, that wasn't fair. The comments were coming off to me as "This doll is perfectly fine and you are wrong for not liking her," and I couldn't understand why it was so necessary to come back and go on about it in a second comment, and talk about me in the third person like I'm not even here.

I'm sorry I keep reading your comments wrong. I'll just--try to assume the best from now on, since I keep attributing the wrong tone or intentions to your comment, and that's my fault.

Expressing myself is a constant struggle

This is what I meant. I hope this makes more sense:

I know Cleolinda is still going to buy the Alice doll, but I would enjoy hearing about what you people like in clothes to better understand why you dislike this doll. I neutrally think Alice's clothing fits the character's personality and are very pretty.

I wonder how everyone else's opinions differ, because I generally have a hard time reading people because of my autism. (Although I don't mention it much. I feel people will think I'm waving it in their face as an excuse for everything like some people do, or acting like a martyr.)

Part of my confusion comes from that Cleo dislikes the Alice, but the very beautiful pictures in her Tumblr seem similar to this doll.

(No one really needs to answer this... sevenmarie and Cleolinda have already given their opinions...)

I'm sorry your feelings were hurt. It can be really hard to tell what someone means in a comment because the written word doesn't carry vocal inflection or facial expression. I got yelled at through the internet a lot for comments I meant as polite when I first joined fandom (and still do occasionally). I also initially read your comment as hostile. If it's helpful to you, I can tell you what made me read your words in a biting tone, so you can avoid it later. If not, skip the rest of this comment and just know you have my sympathies.

If you don't like Alice's beautiful outfits, movie or doll, what do you folks dig about clothes/costumes? You're clearly all about the gothic and fantasy duds if you're Cleolinda. What makes the difference between what you like about those pretty styles (or whatever you dig) and Alice's? I'd honestly like some opinions here.

That phrase "beautiful clothes" in the first statement is a value judgement: it declares the clothes to be beautiful, while talking to someone who does not think they are beautiful. This implies that the person who doesn't find them beautiful has something wrong with their judgement. You can easily read the sentence in a tone of "what on earth DO you like if you don't like this?" I know you didn't mean it that way, but it's tough to tell.

As a general rule, you also shouldn't tell someone what they're all about, especially someone you only know from the internet. Something like, "I've noticed you seem to like gothic and fantasy duds" or "judging by the pictures you link to, you like gothic and fantasy duds," is more polite. I think I know what you meant, but it kind of sounded like you were labeling her, which people don't like. If you use "I" statements when talking about someone else's opinions or tastes, it's less likely to be read as hostile.

Your last two sentences are perfectly polite, in my opinion. I hope that was helpful in some way.

Thank you.

Thank you, sincerely. I could understand all of this after reviewing what I wrote. I have a form of autism that makes me need subtle details about communication verbalized to me to understand them, since I'm developing socially what people normally do at an early age (I learned this from a seminar).

My family understands that I wasn't born with the social skills to survive, but because I don't wear a sign that says, "I'm really struggling"; everyone else will think I'm rude when I screw up. It gets really hard sometimes.

i want to apologize for calling you rude. As narnian_dreamer said, your inflection doesn't come off on the internet. I didn't mean to make you upset or be rude myself.

It is really hard for me to remember that sometimes since I have a very expressive voice. Most people laugh at my jokes and like me in person. I'm happy you understand.
