So... that happened
Nov. 12th, 2009 12:24 pmI just spent an hour on the phone with a reporter who wants to write an article focusing on the more disturbing aspects of New Moon, the ones that parents may not know about, and it was the best game of Horrify the Twilight Noob EVER. It may actually be the longest such game on record. She knew to ask about all the controversial points, but... not the entire width and depth of the horror, if you will. There was a lot of "Oh... wow." I apologized for going on at such length, but she did have a lot of informed questions about a number of plot elements--if nothing else, I give an interviewer plenty of material to work with. And a larger audience will now be made aware of rocking chairs. "You're probably the one who knows the most about it," she said, laughing. I... kind of don't know how to feel about that.
(I imagine it'll come out next week--probably run on the day the movie opens. I'll tell you more about who and what and where when it does. In fact, I may see if one of y'all can clip the article and send it to me or scan it. The Littlest Edward can totes scrapbook it for me.)
I was actually pretty complimentary about how the movies handle some of these elements, though. That said: while I highly doubt I would in any way be the focus of the article, this is going to be read by a wider, non-LiveJournal, probably Twilight-loving audience. They're only going to see my commentary on this specific angle, and not the more affectionate, even-handed snark. I am pretty sure that their outrage will be a complete novelty in my sheltered little corner of the internet. BRING IT. Because I totally won't read any of their responses and my journal doesn't have anonycommenting enabled. Have fun storming someone else's castle, kids!

Date: 2009-11-12 07:05 pm (UTC)Anyway, I look forward to this article (because of the epic game of Horrify The Twilight Noob and also just because you make good points and are all-around awesome).

I spend a lot of my parental-visit time with my daughter doing damage control on that particularly skewed view of reality...

Date: 2009-11-12 07:06 pm (UTC)I'm glad someone is writing an article about the more disturbing aspects of the Twilight universe. I think these aspects of the stories too often get swept under the carpet.

I read your comment on Twitter and I'm just glad there was nobody else in the room to hear me laughing.

Date: 2009-11-12 07:16 pm (UTC)BTW, did you hear about the shark that took a page from Breaking Dawn? Shark bite prompts surprise birth (http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/asia-pacific/8353867.stm): “A pregnant shark at a New Zealand aquarium was bitten by another shark, unexpectedly releasing four baby sharks as visitors watched.”

Date: 2009-11-12 07:22 pm (UTC)I even played it on my first date the other night, recapping the birth scene from Breaking Dawn. And the best part is the only way I knew about it was from you. Thank you, Cleo, for keeping me from awkward silences on my first date. ♥

Date: 2009-11-12 07:59 pm (UTC):) I'm not sure which is better though, the awkward silence before the HtTN or the one afterward....
It was interesting anyway.
His little sister loved the books and he was trying to say how he had bought them all for her b/c he had heard that it was such a good relationship role model... Scary!

Date: 2009-11-12 07:46 pm (UTC)I so cannot wait for this article to come out. Also, in case you were wondering, Stephenie Meyer is scheduled to be on Oprah tomorrow. I've already stocked up on alcohol to take a shot every time she mentions "Edward" and "hot/godlike/perfect" in the same sentence.

I have never heard of a twidad, let alone an academic twimom-and-dad duo, but apparently it exists. The foundations of my world have shattered.
