I just spent an hour on the phone with a reporter who wants to write an article focusing on the more disturbing aspects of New Moon, the ones that parents may not know about, and it was the best game of Horrify the Twilight Noob EVER. It may actually be the longest such game on record. She knew to ask about all the controversial points, but... not the entire width and depth of the horror, if you will. There was a lot of "Oh... wow." I apologized for going on at such length, but she did have a lot of informed questions about a number of plot elements--if nothing else, I give an interviewer plenty of material to work with. And a larger audience will now be made aware of rocking chairs. "You're probably the one who knows the most about it," she said, laughing. I... kind of don't know how to feel about that.

(I imagine it'll come out next week--probably run on the day the movie opens. I'll tell you more about who and what and where when it does. In fact, I may see if one of y'all can clip the article and send it to me or scan it. The Littlest Edward can totes scrapbook it for me.)

I was actually pretty complimentary about how the movies handle some of these elements, though. That said: while I highly doubt I would in any way be the focus of the article, this is going to be read by a wider, non-LiveJournal, probably Twilight-loving audience. They're only going to see my commentary on this specific angle, and not the more affectionate, even-handed snark. I am pretty sure that their outrage will be a complete novelty in my sheltered little corner of the internet. BRING IT. Because I totally won't read any of their responses and my journal doesn't have anonycommenting enabled. Have fun storming someone else's castle, kids!

I am definitely going to keep an eye out for that article when you give details, Cleo.

Damn that must have been a fun game.

It never ceases to make me boggle at how Twimoms think this series presents a good role model/ideal relationship. I wonder if we read the same books v_v

Anyway, I look forward to this article (because of the epic game of Horrify The Twilight Noob and also just because you make good points and are all-around awesome).

lol, I love the tag.

I'm glad someone is writing an article about the more disturbing aspects of the Twilight universe. I think these aspects of the stories too often get swept under the carpet.

I know I've already told you this, but hell, I'll say it again: I cannot wait to read this article. Huzzah for the game that never gets old!

Hee, yeah. She was really on the ball with the questions, too. What I hope she brings up--and I think she will--is that books/movies like Harry Potter and The Golden Compass take so much shit from religious groups, and yet I have heard no outcry at all over the creepier aspects of the Twilight books.

Yeah... like my ex-wife. *deep sigh*

I spend a lot of my parental-visit time with my daughter doing damage control on that particularly skewed view of reality...

Hee. I just hope it's all as hilarious as "cleoloindaisgay." That is seriously one of the most awesome things that has ever happened on this journal.

Mostly, though, if I can tell from an email within a sentence that it's hate mail, I'll just close it. Life is too short to accept other people's negative energy (not to be too New Age-y about it, but there you are).

Ooh, looking forward to the kerfluffle!

BTW, did you hear about the shark that took a page from Breaking Dawn? Shark bite prompts surprise birth (http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/asia-pacific/8353867.stm): “A pregnant shark at a New Zealand aquarium was bitten by another shark, unexpectedly releasing four baby sharks as visitors watched.”

Oh, laws. Well, at least you DO. I didn't want to be all like, "Parents, talk to your kids about Edward Cullen! And also drugs, if you get around to that." But yeah, there is a view of the world in those books that needs to be questioned and discussed.

Of course, I'm sure a lot of people won't hear the (admittedly gleeful) sarcasm there and will be all like OMG CLEOLINDA'S HEAD HAS GOTTEN SO BIG SHE DOES INTERVIEWS AND SELLS HER STUPID MOVIE STUFF FOR MONEY OMG SO LAME. Again: to the left.

I only wish that you had somehow recorded the entire conversation and could make it public because HtTN is my FAVORITE GAME EVER.

I even played it on my first date the other night, recapping the birth scene from Breaking Dawn. And the best part is the only way I knew about it was from you. Thank you, Cleo, for keeping me from awkward silences on my first date. ♥

As a mom, I really don't understand how the "no sex before marriage!" message trumps all of the other abusive and unhealthy aspects of these books. I certainly don't want my daughter to think of Edward as an ideal when she gets older.

I'm actually really looking forward to this article, as per my 'Squee' on twitter. I hope its delightful and causes so much wank. The Nightlight parody you tweeted about, the comments on that article, they were soooo wonderful. I giggled at them almost as much as the book itself.

Thing is, someone ought to be saying that. (Not that it has to be you. I understand completely why you don't feel that's your role, here.)

The Ex: Mormon, with all of the weird gender-role stuff that entails ("Oh, so you hope to grow up and be the Heavenly Mother for your own universe some day. Er. Huh. Good... luck with that?") Me: The polyamorous skeptic agnostic type. Admittedly, my views on relationships aren't precisely mainstream, but I know unhealthy from a hole in the ground.

Gives my life a certain zest, trying to bring up the teenaged daughter with some semblance of a healthy view on relationships, with or without Twilight...

(edited for a wee bit more clarity, and a second time because I was an idiot in the first sentence... is it can be go home tiem nao?)

The greasing the window part killed me ("All the better to stalk you with, my dear *twirls invisible evil mustache*")

But yeah, what sane parent would want their daughter (or son, if the kid swings that way) to date a guy who stalks her and isolates her and just...gah. Having come from an *cough* difficult relationship myself long ago, this pushes too many buttons for me.

TLE's scrapbook will be a thing of beauty. Will he cover it in glitter glue? For scrapbooking purposes, of course.
