So. Stuff.

We all went out to New York Pizza for Valkyrie's birthday yesterday (I am slightly obsessed with their Fire Island Fajita pizza. IT COMES WITH SALSA!), and then we went to see The Lovely Emily's new house, which is awesome, although I think the first words out of my mouth were, "God, it's huge! --You got yourself a lotta pokeweed there." But it really is awesome (it has an entire Rock Band room).

Finally going to try to learn to knit. Knittinghelp.com is going to be my first stop. My first project is going to be a practice scarf with a bit of leftover yarn on which I can try out random techniques. More of a "scarf," really. I'd really like to knit Lyra a little knee-length pink cardigan, but... that's probably years away, in terms of knitting experience.

I think I have a cavity between two molars. Maybe it's just gum inflammation, but my hopes are not high. I have a dental cleaning appointment at the end of the month anyway, so... whatever.

Dying of cramps. You needed to know this, I'm sure. But at least when I say "I'm feeling really bad today," you'll know I don't mean it emotionally.

A few key linkspam items:

Ryan Reynolds Lands 'Green Lantern'! I'm going to be really interested to see how this does or does not affect his Deadpool movie. (However: congratulations, Green Lantern movie! You now get a tag.)

New Moon and Cameron!Avatar panels rescheduled to avoid riots; The Horrors of Comic-Con 2009: Saturday; GIRLS AT COMIC-CON! GET IN THE CAR.

First Look: Wes Anderson's Version of 'Fantastic Mr. Fox.'

'True Blood' gets truly great with new episode tonight.

"I am not a hero for turning you on, and neither is John Barrowman."

Fin.

Well you know you have at least a couple knitters reading here so if you get stuck we've got your answers. :) Also, I already friended you on Ravelry (just Tephra there). :D

When you're up to the doll sized knitting I can give you a few links.

Awesome! I figure no one in Alabama needs another damn scarf, so rather than torment friends and family, I'm going to try to knit stuff for Secret Life when I get good enough.

I liked the videos on Howcast (http://www.howcast.com/search?q=knitting) better than the KnittingHelp.com vids for when I learned to knit. There are also free summer classes on knitting at In the Making (https://www.shopinthemaking.com/) in B'ham.

My first real knitting project was a blanket for a friend's new baby. Very simple knit/purl, nothing fancy at all. The first few rows were fine, but then the blanket got wider...and wider...as my stitches got looser and looser, until it was some weird huge rhomboid with some holes where I'd dropped stitches. But, as my friend said, "He's a baby, he's not going to notice," and then she stuck it in his bassinet anyway.

So, I recommend baby blankets, if your friends are so inclined...:) No matter what, you feel like you've done something worthwhile.

Loool, my first project turned into a rhomboid too (it was meant to be a headband). With holes in it. It was made of mustard-coloured acrylic. It was... not good.

Reynolds as Lantern....

Why is it that I just can't wrap my head around Ryan Reynolds as the Green Lantern? Granted, I don't know a lot about the character (okay, okay....I'll do some research, so please accept my general ignorance). But am I the only one who just doesn't see Reynolds with ANY kind of edge? Can he sneer? Can he really look menacing? I don't know. My recent Entertainment Weekly cover only showed me that he's got abs (unless those were somehow "created"). Teach me oh fans of the Green Lantern. Is this your guy?

Don't be too worried, knitting isn't particularly hard, at least for scarves. My aunt taught me to knit those in (quite literally) about ten minutes. Just don't ask me how you start one (she did it for me) or add fringe. I am not at the level of fringe.

I wouldn't be too intimidated by making something for Lyra. I'm very much a novice knitter (and definitely not a natural one!) but recently designed and made a jumper for my teddybear. It's nice working with such a small piece because you can't get bored and if you mess it up, you've not wasted much. Prior to making his jumper I had knitted one scarf and one stuff rabbit (which is made by knitting a square, then sewing it together cleverly).

Regarding the comic-con article. The first one doesn't seem that bad, at least in terms of sexism. If someone is saying "for those who are excited for Alice in Wonderland", that's got to include girls.

That said, and this is as someone who has found Twilight to be the most excruciatingly uniquitous thing ever, that it attracts people who wouldn't bother for anyhing else is pretty much why it's there. Tickets are tickets as far as they're concerned. And I don't know how one can be a "fan" of a movie that hasn't come out yet.

From: [identity profile] mycenae.livejournal.com
Tickets are tickets as far as they're concerned.

But Comic Con sells out, and it had already started selling out before Twilight came last year. I think it has more to do with the fact that the Twilight series brings in more mainstream publicity for the con. It is there because it brings in money, but I think the actual fans are negligible and not actually needed for their ticket money.

Knitting is not so terrible once you get the basic bits in your head. Don't worry too much about doing things some magical right way, either. Is it working? Then it's the right way.

Ravelry can help loads, too. There's a million groups out there, full of people that can help. Two of my favorites are LSG and Comedy of Errors (the first being "that group where you're allowed/encouraged to swear", and the second being "for discussion of books so terrible you have to laugh"), but I think you'd definitely like Rubberneckers. They're like Fandom Wank for Ravelry.

I love Ravelry, even when I'm too much of a baby to post. Which would be...most of the time. Heh.

Just another one raising my head from the Knitters' crowd.

I personally have found The Knit Witch (http://knitwitch.com/) to be the most helpful - without her I would NEVER have been able to do Kitchener stitch. And that cardigan for Lyra looks really easy, once you have the hang of knitting, increasing and decreasing. Good luck!

Why not! I'll friend you on Rav too. No need to add back or whatevs unless you're so inclined.

Rav eats my brain every time I get on, so now I'm going over there to find you I'll probably be on for an hour browsing patterns.

I just finished my first sweater so I'm on a knitting high. My philosophy of knitting is try anything – the worst that could happen is you rip it out and try something else. Oh and I learned from a combo of my grandma, knitting books from the library, and articles on knitty.com.

Why do you think you have a cavity between two teeth? Does it bleed when you floss?
Does hot or cold bother the area?
Is there achiness or pinchiness?

(I'm a dental assistant, which is why I ask.)

Date: 2009-07-12 09:17 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] cleolinda.livejournal.com
Because it's sensitive between the two teeth and kind of hurts, and I feel it going down into my jaw, like a nerve or something, as opposed to just one of those places on your gums that gets irritated for a while and then goes away. Usually if I get a sore spot like that, it's because something's gotten in there (I guess? Ew), I do a little extra brushing/flossing there, and it goes away. This isn't going away, and it's been a week.
