Won't be around much tomorrow--it's the birthday of a friend of mine, so we're going out to a movie and then meeting other friends for dinner. Have gotten a number of tiny things for Secret Life via readers--they'll be fun to incorporate, but I'm not sure when the next installment will go up. Looks like it's going to be a busy week.

Question from my mother: does anyone out here sell Lia Sophia jewelry? Her old pusher's moved away, and she needs a new hookup.

Also, I have worn out the beloved paperback of Jane Eyre that I have had since I was thirteen, and I need a new copy. I want a hardback this time --I heard something about an annotated version, but can't find one. Can anyone recommend a good edition?

(Man, I don't know that I'd actually sat down and read the whole thing through since I was in college, and it is such a different book to me now. Jane always seemed meek and retiring, in a virtuous heroine kind of way--in comparison to me as a modern, unrestrained teenager. Now that 1) I'm older and 2) I've spent a lot of time studying the Victorian era, it's amazing to realize what a rebel Jane actually is, in her own controlled way. I also thought I'd go back and reread something I thought was so swoonworthy when I was thirteen and find it kind of silly now, but--damn, it is so much more fiery than I remembered. Maybe because I know more about the Victorian era now, I don't know. And for the first time, I actually understood why the hell the stuff about Lowood and the Rivers cousins was in there, in terms of what it says about Jane's moral character, how it was formed, and how that plays out. [Of course, when I was thirteen, I was all just MOAR ROCHESTER.] I'm gonna have to get the miniseries they made a couple of years back now.)

The miniseries with Toby Stephens is completely worth it. I never thought I'd find a Jane Eyre adaptation that lived up to my expectations, but that one was really great. I picspammed/squeed all over it at my journal (http://shaxophile.livejournal.com/17938.html#cutid2).

Ohmigawd, yes! Hands down my favorite adaptation of Jane Eyre. The Orson Welles version is great and all, but Orson Welles is just too handsome to be Rochester. (Sentences I never thought I'd type!) There's something about him that is too polished -- it might just be the way films were made in the '40s. But Toby Stephens -- oof!

It's a super-sexy version, for sure, but it really captures how scandalous the whole book is for a modern viewer very well. Most adaptations of Jane Eyre are so restrained and therefore a little dull (for me, at least), but this one is so full of passion.

They do muck up the gypsy fortune teller scene, which I think is a fairly important one, but I guess I'll just have to get over it.

Not a hard back, but the Norton Critical Edition of Jane Eyre (http://www.amazon.com/Jane-Eyre-Norton-Critical-Editions/dp/0393975428) (and most other titles) is quite good. Lots of interesting background info including letters between the Bronte sisters and essays on the book.

In cheerier news, there's a consignment store here in town that has a craaaaazy amount of dollhouse stuff for a non-dollhouse-only store. Like food and furniture and not one but TWO sets of wee enamelware saucepans. I was really tempted to buy a few things and send them off to The Littlest Bella, but I didn't know if you were already getting inundated with Stuff.

Heh, it's okay--I'll be the first to admit that both the narrative writing and the dialogue are pretty much the opposite of natural. In the end, I think it's a bit like The Scarlet Letter--it's the story itself that captivates me.

Oh, wow, the consignment store sounds awesome. I may have located a good set of dishes/cookware, but--man, I wish I could go browse places like that myself. I never really know what I want until I see it.

I'm sure you're inundated with stuff for Secret Life, but I was in a bunch of antique stores yesterday and started checking out the vintage doll and miniature stuff. I though I might find something to help occupy TLB, but then I remembered: she has no interests!

I'm excited they're going through with a Dawn Treader movie. That was one of my favorites from the series, and I loved the BBC version when I was growing up. Hopefully they'll get on the Caspian - a Spanish accented doll would be awesome!

OK, so it's not a hardback, but the Illustrated Jane Eyre is GORGEOUS. Seriously, I'm so in love with the illustrations, and they made reading the book so much more enjoyable. There's also the Illustrated Bram Stoker's Dracula that I've been thinking about getting.

I had a similar experience re-reading Jane Eyre not too long ago, especially re: Lowood and the Rivers. Are you a fan of the musical?

I have the Norton edition, which is heavily annotated, although in paperback, and a vintage hardback edition with woodcut illustrations by Fritz Eichenberg that came in a dual set with Wuthering Heights. This is the version I read from the most.

I'm re-reading The Eyre Affair myself right now! I love that book so much. In fact the entire Thursday Next series is really delightful. There's some great Jane Austen stuff in the later books. It's a book nerd's dream!

Jane Eyre is my absolute favorite novel of all time, so I completely relate to how years between readings changes your entire perspective. It's one of the things I love so much about the novel. And as someone who's heading to grad school next year and intends to specialize/get her Ph.D in English Literature and specialize in the Victorian Novel, I love how learning about the Victorians changes your entire perspective and understanding.

The illustrated Jane Eyre is excellent, btw. I'm buying it for my sister for her birthday, because she's in love with it.

Oh, and the Toby Stephens version of Jane Eyre? Totally the best version hands down. At least in my opinion.

Meanwhile, I'm furious it even exists and instead of actually remaking Clash of the Titans (which didn't need to be remade in the first place) they're remaking Disney's Hercules.

I'll give them that Sam Worthington is probably a better Perseus than Harry Hamlin was, but much as I love Ralph Fiennes, I can't see him topping Maggie Smith as the villain of the piece.

I do kind of like the one with Timothy Dalton (not because of his portrayal of Rochester so much as how the relationship/character dynamic is played out after the "oops, I'm married" scene before she legs it). ROFL, so true! Hey I was around 13 when I read that book as well all the way through, how funny! We all had to write essays about it and they were so awful apparently that our teacher told us to rewrite them and never gave them back!

What I'll always remember most I think is the part in Lowood when the owner notices an orphann with curly hair and criticizes it as a luxary, and when the director lady or whatever says that it's naturally curly he says, "But we musn't conform to nature!" or something like that, only for his daughters to then show up later after this speech with totally permed hair. (I think it stuck with me because I have very curly hair naturally)
