Apropos of nothing much, I'll tell you that I tried to watch the third Mummy movie last night, and I could not get fifteen minutes into it--because I can forgive a lot, and I can have a lot of fun with stuff that isn't actually good, but I just could not, not, not get behind Maria Bello replacing Rachel Weisz (who I love in the first movie). They just weren't even the same character--Rachel Weisz brought a kind of giddy can-do energy to Evie, whereas Maria Bello had this arch, coy, detached take on the whole thing (and how much of that is due to her wrestling with a fake accent, I don't know).

But I will give the movie this: the first time we hear Bello!Evie, she's reading aloud from a novel she's published (a thinly fictionalized version of her own adventures). Then a woman in the audience stands up and asks if she based the heroine on herself, and then we see Bello!Evie for the first time as she says, all but winking at the camera, "No, I can honestly say she is a completely different person." I laughed so hard.

The Mummy was my introduction to Rachel Weisz (and John Hannah) and I fell in instant love. She's so darn cute and brought a sweet naivete and innocence to the part that I don't think Maria Bello could pull off. I remember seeing some First Look at a theater for it and "they" admitted they let Maria Bello use her own interpretation rather than try to emulate Rachel Weisz. Wise choice, as who could ever do but a pale imitation of RW, but would certainly detract from the idea of a sequel!

There was a trailer for M3 after some awesome trailer (The Dark Knight? something of that ilk) and it just looked awful. Even the trailer was B-quality and looked ridiculous.

As ridiculous as they are, I love the first two Mummy movies so freaking much. I really wish they hadn't touched them any further at all, but if Rachel Weisz has been in the third one I would have seen it, as bad as it looked.

Wow, Daddy!Kirk suddenly got a ridiculous amount of game. He's cute as all get out, but MAN that's some big lead roles all of a sudden.

And nothing compares to the charmingness that is Rachel Weisz as Evie. She was just so plucky and capable and I adore her.

My favorite reaction to Antichrist has to be Manohla Dargis's, via Roger Ebert's blog: When it was all over, we staggered up the aisles. I don't know that I so much liked Dancer in the Dark, but I've never had such a violent, prolonged, emotional, tearful reaction to any other movie (seriously, I started sobbing uncontrollably about halfway through, and I didn't stop until over an hour after it was over). When he finds a nerve, he doesn't just hit it, he bludgeons it to death.

Also, I was starting to get worried at the lack of New Moon Media Frenzy. It would not be Twilight unless at least four minorly teen-oriented news groups covered every little detail of it. All the time. No matter how trivial or useless. While making said details sound much more important than they really are. And making it all Serious Business.

(And yet I watch it unfold with glee.)

Disclaimer: I am always eager for new takes on well-known canon, even if they sound insane and I love the source material(s).

That said? This is the first time I recall being all ONTD-lunatic and muttering "I'm gonna cut a bitch" as I watch a trailer. I don't know what Guy Ritchie's been smoking, but that? Is not Sherlock Holmes. It looks ridiculously entertaining, but it also looks AWFUL and this one of the source materials he could have used for an actual GOOD film that people would actually have seen, wtf?! [/rant]

I think it's safe to say it'll give you lots of material for a first-class m15m (and I say this with all the appreciation and none of the pressure in the world). Wtf, Ritchie, wtf?!

On a different note, I wonder why the HP fen keep ranting that they've seen the whole movie already. I feel like for the last few months I've been shown reshuffled versions of the same clips. *yawn*

... what am I saying?! It's HP fen. *headdesk*

I kind of like the direction the movie is taking. All of the adaptations of Sherlock Holmes that I've seen have flanderized him and/or Watson in some way. This movie is just playing up the glimpses of fighting prowess seen in Arthur Conan Doyle's work. But from the few clips, it also seems like they've got a hold on Holmes' bad habits that often get glossed over in other adaptations. I'm willing to give it a chance.
