A shelf divided

So, last time we looked in on The Shelf, Anna lost her mind, made herself an anti-vampire tinhat, and got herself dumped by a fed-up Elizabeth. The intervening days have not been any kinder to her sanity; at one point I had to wrestle my mother’s rosary from her ("SHE GOT THAT FROM A NUN IN TUSCALOOSA!" “YOU’RE NOT CATHOLIC!”). In the course of The Littlest Edward organizing my jewelry, a number of old bits and pieces turned up, and Anna ended up running off with a silver earring that had lost its hook. It was, of course, a cross; she dug up some dental floss to string it on.

"If only Van Helsing were here," she grumbled. "He would understand."

"Look, you are not going to have any stupid hookups while you’re on the rebound, and besides, he’d have to take a number on my shopping list at this point. Behind John Connor, at that."

Of course, The Littlest Edward only got more depressed. "I can smell her fear," he said gloomily. "Smells like spearmint."

"Does it work at all?" I asked. "The tinhat?"

"Somewhat," he admitted. "I can’t hear distinct thoughts anymore. I just get a general sense of crushing rage."

"Psssht. I get that just from looking at her."

Meanwhile, I’ve been trying to keep Elizabeth from getting lonely; she and Anna hit it off so quickly that I’m not sure she put enough effort into making other friends. A friend sent me a box of Mardi Gras booty (I have a strong magpie streak), so I had Elizabeth help me incorporate it into my existing collection. I mean, she’s a pirate king; I’m sure she knows her way around a treasure chest. And Purple Arwen, who enjoys a good piece of jewelry herself, came over to help us, so that was nice.

(I offered to let Edward sort the doubloons by color, but he seemed uneasy about this proposition, so I let him go back to adding up my spare change.

Eowyn wanted to go over and help him, but he was so uncomfortable with that prospect that I ended up dragging her back to the booty.)

Meanwhile-meanwhile, the guys felt compelled to put on manifest displays of masculinity, what with spring being the time when a young man’s fancy turns to love and/or showing up sparklepires, I guess. Between (among?) four guys, they had a substantial stockpile of weapons—plenty to start up a good mock war with. Apparently Faramir Two decided it would be "boring" if the Faramirs just fought the Aragorns, so they swapped up and Faramir One ended up taking a solid beating at the hands of his brother (brotherself?), mostly because he spent too much time looking over his shoulder to see if Eowyn had noticed his mansomeness yet. She did at least a couple of times, although I kind of wanted to shake her because she's visibly torn between the handsome, strapping Ranger of Ithilien who’s crazy about her and the eternal seventeen-year-old half her size WHO DOESN’T EVEN CARE. What IS that? Is it just that she thinks that he could care someday in some crazy alternate universe, and that his hypothetical future caring would be worth more because she had to "earn" it? Or because she’s just intrigued by what the caring of a gloomy joyless whiny brooding loner like him would possibly be like seriously, E, I can't even tell you what a lost cause this is? Is it just that the sparkle is always greener on the other side? I’d tell Faramir to act more like Edward and play hard to get, but I’m afraid that’d backfire like whoa and it’d be all my fault. And also, I don't think he has the hair for it.

Finally, though, Eowyn left the girls to their booty-sorting and came over and asked if she could cut in and fight some, which was a GIGANTIC RELIEF to me, let me tell you. So Fugagorn handed over his crooked sword (bless) and took a time-out on the sidelines with me.

"You’d think the whole thing with the mantle would have Faramir sitting pretty," he said, shaking his head. Over on the battlefield, Faramir Two looked over, waved, and took an elbow to the head from Faramir One. "I mean, that was a pretty sweet move right there."

I sighed. "Well, the heart wants what it wants, I guess. Even if what it wants is stupid." And for some reason, I couldn’t help adding: "Or taken."

"Oh, you mean the other Faramir?" he said, which startled the hell out of me. "He’s cool."

"Really? I mean—you know?"

"Yeah. He’s a nice guy. And, you know, I’m kind of used to... you know, crushes and things... by now." We will forgive him for sounding a little puffed-up about this, given that he's so thoroughly outclassed now in the looks department. "Besides, he’s still less obvious than Eowyn ever was."

Sigh.

If Anna likes John Connor for his weapons..

..she'd absolutely fall in love with Naked Snake from Metal Gear Solid (http://www.sideshowtoy.com/?page_id=4489&sku=900396).

He's far too expensive mind you, but you have to give the girl something to pine for. XD;

I can't believe how at-home and in-charge Edward looks in every picture -- the newest guy and the tiniest! ::shakes head::

Has it been dark and gray in Birmingham ever since Edward arrived, and is it just coincidence that the events of Twilight start in March?

[identity profile] cleolinda.livejournal.com 2009-03-17 04:15 am (UTC)(link)
... Huh.

[identity profile] sirius20-81.livejournal.com 2009-03-17 06:00 am (UTC)(link)
only in the movie. the book actually states in new moon that she moved to forks in january, either the 18th or 19th i think.

i'm ashamed i know that.

[identity profile] xuxana.livejournal.com 2009-03-17 03:48 pm (UTC)(link)
LOL.

But even in the book there's something about March, right? Doesn't Bella go all of January and February before Edward deigns to speak to her? Well, I can check this myself, actually, since I own all the books (talk about yer shame, lol!)

Is...is that some kind of stylized Callisto figure in your icon, or has my local deli started putting really good drugs in their sandwiches?

[identity profile] xuxana.livejournal.com 2009-03-17 08:26 pm (UTC)(link)
lol, if only delis would put really good drugs in all sandwiches... ::sigh::

That's the Callisto "action figure," which I copped from Amazon (she comes with Hope!!). Did you recognize her from her posture? Because, judging from the photo, it's kind of a slap-dash figure, but they got Hudson Leick's pelvis-thrust-forward posture and hanging hands perfectly, I think. http://www.amazon.com/Xena-Warrior-Princess-Callisto-Figures/dp/B00000J9KE

Ok, after seeing the picture of Edward Dollen sorting the change, I'm pretty sure that you need to get him a scrapbook.

Pan's Tiny Earmuffs of Anti-Vampirism are the cutest thing ever.

Does Edward have super vampire skills of adding? Because he looks like he's concentrating very hard on his task.

White Arwen is reading my absolute favorite version of the Secret Garden EVER. It's one of my favorite childhood books, but the illustrations in that particular edition are completely beautiful.

[identity profile] mercurywater.livejournal.com 2009-03-17 06:11 am (UTC)(link)
Grarr!! I want MOAR!! MOAR!!!

[identity profile] mercurywater.livejournal.com 2009-03-17 06:32 am (UTC)(link)
Pans earmuffs are so cute!!
And I almost died laughing when Edward talked about the smell of Anna's fear.

"Does it work at all?" I asked. "The tinhat?"

"Somewhat," he admitted. "I can’t hear distinct thoughts anymore. I just get a general sense of crushing rage."

i hope that's what customers hear when they try to read my thoughts....stupid work....... thank god for secret life of dolls!

Oh, my God. Does Pan have a tiny tin hat, or are my eyes betraying me?

[identity profile] cleolinda.livejournal.com 2009-03-17 05:37 pm (UTC)(link)
He does! I figured if he had one, Lyra wouldn't need one.

Pan's tiny, tiny tinhat of cuteness kinda broke me. Like seriously. Omg, Anna, honey...

Edward the Addandsubtractipire?

Also, I need an Anna/Elisabeth icon. *hearts my dolly 'ship*

I just love White Arwen just sitting there, reading. She's so peaceful! :D

Is it just that the sparkle is always greener on the other side?

Probably shinier, too. XD

[identity profile] rustedinkwell.livejournal.com 2009-03-17 05:18 pm (UTC)(link)
I never thought I'd say this, but I think I want my own Edward Dollen. He can sulk about above my computer and be annoyed by tiny little Sailor Moon and origami junk. The way you write him is adorable. He's such a woobie. XD

Dolls aside, I love reading these updates (all your updates really) because you have a lovely way with humor and it never fails to make me smile or laugh (or both!). And, as strange as it sounds, I find myself weirdly inspired by your doll updates. I have no idea why, but I'm not about to question it because it makes me happy. :D

[identity profile] cleolinda.livejournal.com 2009-03-17 05:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Aw, thanks. My first hope with these entries is that people don't think I'm that crazy loser doll lady. My second hope is that people might start to look at things around them a little differently--one of the most fun (funnest?) parts for me is looking around the house and making obviously homemade props, like the foil armor and the toothpick stakes and all. Like, I actually like the silliness of it. And maybe that's what people get out of it, an urge to go make something.

[identity profile] rustedinkwell.livejournal.com 2009-03-17 06:14 pm (UTC)(link)
That's pretty much what I like too. Like, you (general you, not you specifically) know you're being silly but it doesn't matter because it's fun and it's only for about a half hour before going back to boring responsibilities. It's a way of being happy and creative. And finally using some of the random junk that's been piling up.

You are so far from being a crazy doll lady. I've recently gotten into the Asian ball-joint doll stuff and THOSE people are crazy. You aren't looking for a car seat for them or taking them to the grocery store so they can pick out things, so I'd say you're perfectly sane.

I want Edward and Faramir Two to get together. We all know that Edward is gay; in a better version of Twilight, Edward would have admitted that his endless angst was a result of repressing his true sexuality and would have fallen in love with Jacob. Not only would that have been a proper Romeo/Juliet Thang, it would have been...well, frankly, HOT.

[identity profile] kudzita.livejournal.com 2009-03-17 05:29 pm (UTC)(link)
I am so very, very full of ♥ for each and every one of these. Seriously.

[identity profile] edda.livejournal.com 2009-03-17 10:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Poor Edward, just trying to get along.

And Eowyn should know that sometimes they both turn out to be turkeys and she might be better off developing a new skill set or strengthening friendships instead.

Not casting aspersions on any of the gents, just sayin'.

[identity profile] amaz0n-princess.livejournal.com 2009-03-18 02:35 am (UTC)(link)
And also, I don't think he has the hair for it.

LOL!!! Best line!!!
