As someone who has been trying to lure people to the fandom for a while an have had great success (mainly because the show does most of the work), I encourage you to do so. I'll even loan you my DVDs for series 1, 2, and 4 next time I'm in Birmingham (might have 3 soon; we'll see).

I think I have the Eccleston season (series?) and at the very least the first Tennant season. And they're showing it in reruns on Sci-Fi as well, if I can catch up on the first two.

I think he will be a good choice. At the very least, I'm not going to continue withholding judgments until I watch a few episodes. I've seen the two Philip Pullman adaptations he was in with Billie Piper and I thought he did quite a good job. Anyway, I like the idea of the part going to a younger, rather than older actor. I think it will make for an interesting dynamic.

And yes, I really think you should watch the show. It certainly has its cheesy and wtf moments but on the whole its very well produced, well written, and well-acted. There is certainly a ton of fanwank out there about the modern series and companions and doctors and everything else. To each his own opinion, I guess. I personally have enjoyed all of the season produced so far, and have a hard time picking favorites.

I started watching the show when Peter Davidson (the last young doctor) was on, back in the 1980's. It'll be interesting to see Smith's take on the character.

I think he could be good. The promo pic looks good, nice and moody. I hope the show takes a turn for the darker to go along with him.

He's got 6 months to decide how he's going to be playing him so I wait with bated breath. :)

I will reserve judgment until I actually see him as the Doctor, but my first reaction was "noooo, he's so LITTLE!" (he is not even a year older than I am. This does not seem right at all). Also I really wanted Paterson Joseph. Numberwang anyone? Anyone?
