Only one Twilight link for the moment, and it is: reports of Robert Pattinson's death were greatly exaggerated. Particularly since he appeared on the Today show four hours after he supposedly died. Vampires: what're you gonna do?

[livejournal.com profile] diddakoi asks: Are guys actually intimidated by smart women? Do they really find intelligence unattractive, or is that one of those outdated fallacies? My personal theory is yes and no, in that order--a lot of guys do find intelligence attractive, but are too shy (read: intimidated) to do anything about it. Thoughts?

... Ew.

See, to me, it has little to do with the relative intelligence of the two people in the couple and everything to do with their own self-confidence. If two people are both intelligent and confident in their own intelligence, there shouldn't be a need to be all like, "One of us has to be the smarter one, and it has to be me."

I will say that my father used to put my mother down all the time, "joking" in front of us how stupid she was. I always thought it was assy of him anyway, but it was only years later after he'd screwed up his entire life that I realized she had been WAY smarter than him the entire time, and the reason he was so assy was not because he was smarter, but because he couldn't stand that he wasn't.

'10 Things I Hate About You: The Series' Doesn't Want You To Compare It To The Movie, OK?

Then why does the series exist?

Moving on. When it comes to guys being intimidated by intelligent girls/women, I think it has a lot to do with the emotional and mental maturity and/or personality of the guy. In high school, I was well on my way to becoming the random, snarky, cynical bitch that I am. In conversation, I had a tendency to say what I thought, even if it elicited strange stares from guys and girls alike. I wonder if, because a lot of adolescent girls have a tendency to roam in packs and stick with the pack agenda, so to speak, that's what guys become used to, and they're not sure what to make of someone who doesn't necessarily fit inside that narrow box.

I've noticed, however, that this is not something that is unique to males. Ever since I was a kid, I was a little strange (for example, I was and middle-schooler who deeply appreciated opera and had only a vague notion that Kurt Cobain existed), and even the people who said they were my friends made fun of me for it. I cannot be anything other than what I am, and so I put myself out there for people, and all my life I have been acutely aware of when I "go too far" for other peoples' sensibilities. It's taken me a while, but I've learned, at that point, to stop making an effort in their direction. It may not be healthy, and it has turned me into someone who most of my friends describe as hard to get to know, but at the same time, I know exactly who my friends are.

*nods* I was just talking to someone in his late 20s/early 30s, and he said that the day he realized he wasn't cool was the most liberating day of his life. He just stopped trying and enjoyed himself.

I think that's key for anyone trying to enjoy life. At some point, you have to stop trying to impress people and only worry about yourself -- be content that who you are is impressive enough, without trying to be . . . blah, Jay-Z, for a random "cool" celebrity.

Which is why I make so many jokes about Victorian literature. Others' results may vary.

I can't speak for whether guys find intelligence attractive, but here are two things I've learned about men in general.

1. They like to explain things.

2. They don't like to lose.

So extrapolating that an intelligent woman makes #1 less necessary and #2 more likely....

You know, I've always felt that if you're going to spend loads of money and time on one of those "way of life" fashion trends, it'd better be something big and friggin' weird (in the awesome way)!

Oh, Hugh Jackman. Your butt is in movies, and I cannot un-see it or associate anything with X-Men other than your butt.

The thing that really ticked me off about Clayton and Frollo was that the good guys did the "Hey, I'll try to be good and help now that I see you're doomed!" instead of just sort of silently standing back and staring...

In this week's L Magazine:

The Plantbot: This wicker box with ceepy obot legs holds your plant and walks across the room, following the sunlight streaming through your windows as the day progresses. It also terrifies cats, dogs, humans, and most plants.

and the little blurb for Twilight in "opening"

Re: guys and finding intelligence attractive - In high school, when people thought I was the "smartest girl in school" (I wasn't, but everyone seemed to think that for some strange reason), I would have said yes, since all the guys I was interested in rejected me. But when I was in law school, everyone thought I was stupid, and all the guys rejected me then, too.

So basically, I've learned it's not intelligence or stupidity guys find unattractive, it's just me. Which, erm, probably doesn't answer your question. Sorry.
