Johnny Depp as the Lone Ranger what?

“During Disney’s preview today in Hollywood, the studio questioned who could possibly play the titular character in its upcoming feature The Lone Ranger.”

“At that, Disney rolled out the USC marching band to come down and play the Ranger’s theme song. This was followed by an appearance by Depp himself who took to the stage in full Captain Jack Sparrow attire…wearing The Lone Ranger’s mask.”

1. Wait, this actually happened?

2. Well, they were also announcing ideas for POTC4. Hell, he probably puts that costume on to go to the corner store sometimes.

2. I just went back to the link to write this up, and MTV is saying now that he's going to play Tonto. What the actual fuck, y'all.


ETA: Can someone go look into this for me? And possibly file a complaint if it's warranted? I'm trying to finish this project by next week and it's crunch time and this bizarro plagiarism shit makes my head hurt.

It did annoy me a bit that it was used so abruptly and permanently in the book for pretty much a single scene and purpose. So many other things in the series were able to be overcome, worked around, defeated, reversed, or otherwise defanged that I kept expecting the Veil would turn out to be another of these. And then it was just never ever mentioned again.

It was if Rowling got to that point in the book, said "crap, I need to get Sirius out of the way", and quickly penned the equivalent of "and then a monster appeared and ate him for no reason".

I'm cool with Irene Adler being in it as long as she and Holmes don't wind up in domestic bliss at the end and the movie doesn't have Holmes making any grand pronouncements of love. RDJ can do subtexty smoldering like no one's business. I'm still hoping that "obscure character traits" means they'll be playing up the cocaine use; the Granada series did a lot with that but it's never been touched on in any movies as far as I know. Maybe they'll throw some opium in for good measure.

If Johnny Depp is playing Tonto and not the Lone Ranger, that's just seriously lame, and I love Johnny Depp. Hollywood, it's no longer the '50s; stop hiring white dudes to play Native Americans.

I'm going to admit my bias up front, by saying I adore "The New Yorker" (although not necessarily their covers) and simply detest "EW," which I think should be renamed "Ewwww."

But I think it's weird anyone would call the "EW" cover a satire while refraining from pointing out that the ORIGINAL cover from "The New Yorker" was itself a satire. In fact, the original was a *pointed* satire at the media, whereas the "EW" cover was really more of a benign and goofy parody than a satire. (That is, it has no real point to make, other than to score a knowing wink.)

I didn't like that cover of "The New Yorker," but I think one should at least admit what it is and not attack it for being what it isn't. In fact, the feature article on Obama in that issue did NOT portray him as any sort of radical at all. If anything, it portrayed him (as a young man) as a brilliant but otherwise rather typical Chicago Democratic party machine bureaucrat. Yes, the article attacked him FROM THE LEFT. Because it's "The New Yorker," not "The National Review." Way to COMPLETELY miss the point, people.

Oh, and another thing, "EW": you're not on firm ground for attacking other magazine's magazines' COVERS.

Um, I dunno 'bout that. At least not lately.

I mean, don't get me wrong, I read a lot of different magazines (though the New Yorker isn't one of them at this time; I'm actually mostly on a New Scientist/Scientific American/Scientific American Mind/Psychology Today/Mental Floss/skeptic-oriented kick these past few months, and I only have so much spare cash, ya know?)...

...and right now? As in, like, RIGHT NOW, now?

Last week's Entertainment Weekly was ONE OF THE FEW VOICES OF REASON THAT I READ ON POLITICS I SHIT YOU NOT.

They had a full-page open-letter-style article (for instance) basically begging the news networks NOT to treat the occasionaally-rated-higher-than-American-Idol presidential race as if it were reality TV or a soap opera (talking about "personal stories", relatability, etc., as opposed to, you know... issues and facts and the candidates' stances on them)... to you know, NOT go to candidates' fucking "spin rooms" to get "scoops", but rather do, say, full specials on "what they lied about", or on important issues that are actually, you know, about the issues.

Which, of course, CNN did NOT DO. Ever. And still really hasn't. None of the other networks either, from what I've seen. They treated it... like a reality TV/soap opera hybrid, just like EW basically predicted they would and begged them not to.

In short? Yes, they cover silly stuff, too. But they've also got better integrity than any television news source around the past few weeks. Which is, of course, utterly sad but last week it was to my mind indisputably true, too.

(I've heard EW referred to as the "smartest mainstream entertainment magazine". At this point, I believe it.)

1) John Stewart/Stephen Colbert. These two are BOTH on my Guilt-Free Three list. Interchangeably so, because David Tennant and John Barrowman needed to make the list.

2) Loved the explanation for the veil-- religion in HP is something totally fascinates me!

3) And... The part of me that's a Holmes purist is totally cringing right now. Irene Adler is fascinating because she's the one woman who totally stumps Holmes. And makes him respect women. That short story does a lot for the character of Holmes. It's also one of my favorites. So I'll be a bit wary of going to see this movie.

4) If Depp plays Tonto... that will be extremely frustrating.

I am both very excited and very worried about this Holmes adaptation. I mean, plus side: RDJr. Minus side? Actually, they've had a pretty easy time of it in the past. I don't have an account, so I usually get people to do it for me, but they'll email someone about it and it usually gets taken down within the same day. Of course, that may be because they leave comments on the entry apprising the author of why it's not cool, and the author may do it herself, I don't know.

The writer of the Phantom of the Opera padory claims to be your cousin, and that s/he obtained permission from you to use parts of your script. Also, that it is not plagiarism, because s/he put a lot more dialog into it.
