I just went back to the link to write this up, and MTV is saying now that he's going to play Tonto.
Despite the fact that this is insulting to Native American actors everywhere (unless Depp can prove some Indian blood, which with those cheekbones he may well have), my head just exploded a little after reading that, because my first thought was "Oh, please GOD let Christian Bale play the Lone Ranger!"
