What the hell is going on at EMI? "This means that as Coldplay releases 'Viva La Vida,' the biggest album of its career, its American record label will have no one running it. And the funny part is that none of them knows it."

Does Science Fiction Speak to Our Condition More Than Fancy Literary Writing? I don't know, although I'm inclined to agree generally that books that are about people doing tangible things speak more to our condition than vague existential meebling about how hollow life in this modern, over-commercialized world is. I mean, ideally you have the tangible storylines, which may or may not include people having awesome adventures, and the existential depth.

D'oh. I will be attending Comic Con on Saturday only. I guess I'll just hear about the sparkle 2 days after.

First I'll miss John Barrowman (attending Thur & Fri only), now this. I think I'd feel better about the whole thing if the Saturday single ticket wasn't higher-priced. =/

Aw, thanks for the The Three Best Bits of Relationship Advice I've Ever Been Given, as someone who is in an icky...thing (?) right now (if one can even call it that) those were so pleasant and a lovely perspective.

I also wanted to share with you something that a member in a another comm sent out: 28 Days to a Bikini Mind (http://kateharding.net/2008/05/20/guest-post-28-days-to-a-bikini-mind/).

Anyway, thought I'd share.

I am also confused! I can't tell if it's meant to be that she's just talking on and on and on, or if she's suddenly realised that they're the person for her and either run off to be with them or is just sitting in silent contemplation of this.

Does Michael Jackson still have rights to the Beatles catalogue? Paul McCartney has been trying for years to buy it back.

From the third Iron Man link:

Then, IESB dropped the bomb that the reason Marvel hadn't signed Favreau yet was because he wanted more money and they didn't feel he deserved it. (emphasis mine)

WAT. Yeah, I mean he and RDJ only made over five hundred million bucks (so far!) for you guys. Jesus Marvel, get your heads out of your asses. Is there some sort of Fan Outrage petition I can sign, or letter campaign? 'Cause I'll do it! Or maybe RDJ will dig his heels in, or something (though I don't know how much power he would have over something like this; hasn't he already signed the contract for 2?).

Wait. So why are people surprised about the Linkin Park reveal? I don't have the book in front of me ATM it can't enter a house unless you invite it in! but when I read the part where Bella listens to it in bed, the description Meyer gave seemed to really suggest them to me.

Like, in the same subtle way she suggests Edward is attractive.

Even if Iron Man II looks terrible, I will still probably go see it. =P RDJ is just a badass.

I don't mind Linkin Park. They're one of those bands where some of their songs are pretty good, but most of them are kinda "eh.." I always found it interesting though that Ms. Meyer pictured them as the band Bella listened to to first just drown out her thoughts and ended up liking the cd after listening to it over and over. I always thought that Meyer would have gone with a Muse cd considering how much she loves the band and was inspired by their music throughout the books. I know for me personally, the first time I listened to Absolution I thought it sounded kinda weird...like it could be Halloween music. However, by the third listen, I was hooked and now don't drive anywhere without my five Muse cds in my car in case the radio sucks. That seemed to me to be a fitting comparison to her description in Twilight of Bella's reaction to Linkin Park. And I could picture Edward throwing in a Muse cd way before a Linkin Park cd. I mean, c'mon, it's Muse...they are made of awesome!

Re: Tom Lefroy. I don't get it. Hasn't that picture been about for years? It's in one of my Jane Austen books, can't remember whether it's the biography or letters.

Anyway, he looks sort of wicked. Cute, though.

[identity profile] cleolinda.livejournal.com 2008-06-11 06:59 am (UTC)(link)
Heh. I had just assumed she was using an imaginary band, which was why she hadn't named it in the first place. (I probably would have made up a fictional band, myself. But then, I collect would-be band names.)

SERIOUSLY.

I can honestly say that if Favreau isn't involved, I won't go and see it.

Unless they pick, like, Mel Brooks or something. Just for the sheet "...wait really?" factor.

Same here, pretty much. Especially after the Making Of featurette I saw on YouTube; directors that have that kind of respect and love for the material they're working with should NOT be swapped out.

[livejournal.com profile] filkertom, a/k/a Tom Smith, a/k/a The World's Fastest Filker (tm), is a professional filk musician and very, very funny. His website can be found here (http://www.tomsmithonline.com/main1.htm), and you can check out some of his music for free (http://www.tomsmithonline.com/freestuff.htm). He's done something pretty nasty to his left leg, which is going to lay him up for months of post-surgical rehab. Which, for a professional musician, means no travel, no gigs, and a serious reduction in income. So this would be a great time for interested people to buy downloads of his music (http://www.tomsmithonline.com/dl.htm) from the website, or, if they're already fans and feel inclined to make a little donation in his Open Virtual Guitar Case (http://www.tomsmithonline.com/buystuff.htm), that'd be pretty darned helpful to him.

Oh shit, I completely forgot about that! In that case, their music is slightly more safe. I mean, Crazy Michael Jackson still owning it sucks, but it's a little bit better than an imploding record company, you know?

I hope Radiohead can buy all their music back, though their back catalog showing up in iTunes may indicate that they did.

It's also kind of funny that this is happening only a couple of years after a bunch of the more successful indie bands signed to major labels - The Decemberists and Interpol in particular are signed to Capitol.

Man. Coldplay is actually number 1 in the UK already and their album isn't released until tomorrow. And in two weeks they're going to have nobody representing them (and nobody told them)? Craziness.

Also, how were they allowed to be number 1? Since Monday? I don't know.

Crappy Movies Are Destroying Your Brain, Say Scientists.

Except. Er. They don't say that. Not in the io9 article, although I suppose one could infer it from the intro paragraph, and certainly not in the NS one to which it links. They say that Hitchcock gets more similarity in the responses across an audience, and at no point make any value judgements about the content :).

Smurfs on film - I'm not sure whether to be delighted or alarmed :D.
