So. Uh. My keyboard is kind of dying. Last night one of the keys got stuck, and today the colon doesn't work. (The semi-colon works just fine, so the key's not stuck, which is just baffling.) So of course my /referred (guess which letter doesn't work!) keyboard, the Microsoft Internet Keyboard, isn't in /roduction anymore and I have to /ick out a new one. Which I have; I just have to wait for it to come in from Amazon, because everything chea/ was /icked over due to Black Friday, and the only other o/tions were hella ex/ensive wireless monstrosities. Oh, and my mouse was on its last nonexistent legs anyway, so a new one of those is coming in, too. I can't decide if I want to bother trying to lim/ through a links/am entry this way, or try to forage someone else's castoff keyboard, or wait, or... what. But, you know, that's where I am.

Who knew that we used the "p" key so much? :-[

Bit like when I broke my left little finger. Who knew how often you use your off-hand's little finger?

Also, it took me a good thirty seconds to work out that p was the broken key. On account of referred being a real word too.

*Returns 45 minutes later* Huh, I thought I posted this. Oops.

A gift for you... the letter P!

Hey, Cleo, I'd guess that your 'p' doesn't work. So, here you are, have two new ones: Pp - just copy them, and paste them whereever you need them! :)

Sometimes my keys don't work so well - I have to press down really hard just to get an Aa or a Zz. Which is bad, as I hsave a laptop, and can't easily replace the keyboard! Individual keys can be replaced, though, or just popped out, cleaned, and then (very tediously, and with a lot of patience) replaced. Good Luck with your keyboard!

Just in case some other letters don't work, here's the entire alphabet (not including 'OPTION', as that's the only one that doesn't work at the moment for me!) -with spaces in between the characters, for clarity:

lower case:
` 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 0 - =
q w e r t y u i o p [ ] \
a s d f g h j k l ; '
z x c v b n m , . /

UPPER CASE/SHIFT:
~ ! @ # $ % ^ & * ( ) _ +
Q W E R T Y U I O P { } |
A S D F G H J K L : "
Z X C V B N M < > ?

Also, I send you chocolates *points to icon* to brighten your mood/lessen your stress. :)

Now see, after reading her entry, I read your comment as, "to brighten your moodplessen your stress."

Durrr.

When I was reading Cleo's entry, I read the / as a lowercase L, at first.

I woder if we can make plessen a word, now... what would you have as the meaning? ;)

Ooh, that's a tough one.

Well, just looking at it, it kind of makes me think it could be a variation on "schooled" as in, "he SCHOOLED me in that competition." Probably because it reminds me of "lesson."

So..."I used some relaxation techniques today and plessened my stress into submission!"

Well, I clearly can't be as helpful as editornia, but I can vote for linkspam, because you copy and paste most of the titles and suchlike in there, and you've been given the gift of the letter P and a colon.

*sympathy*

Last year, my laptop was giving my some troubles on certain keys, mostly due to it being a hand-me-down from my stepdad who had cracked the casing. Duct tape seemed to help, till in the middle of one of my online class finals, half the keyboard just stopped responding. Nothing is more stress reducing then having to run to Best Buy to get a new keyboard while trying to make it back before your time limit expires. *eyeroll*

This summer, while doing some spot touches on the carpet with the canister vacuum, my husband went "oh, there's some dust on the keyboard!" and went after the computer before I had a chance to stop him, and now I have no "z". =)

I hope you get a nice keyboard, I hate having to get used to a new one when I liked the previous one just fine.

All of my keys work, but the 's' key is faded.

Like, you can't see the 's' on it anymore. It's kind of sad.

My B, M, N, D, and F have all bit the dust. My S is as plain as can be, though. Weird!

My previous keyboard was like that as well; all the most popular letters were worn out. Which was fine for daily use, but a huge pain in the butt when I had to, say, copy in a string of computer generated letters to sign up for a mailing list or something. I can touch-type words, but I don't actually know where the letters are, so if I have to think about it, I am Doomed!

There's a keyboard in the computer cluster in my dorm that is weirdly messed up.
a = a + caps lock (caps lock is also caps lock)
2 = 12~
x = zx
tab = ctrl + shift
And I'm sure there are other problems with it. Not long ago, I spent thirty minutes trying to figure out which keys did what so that I could log in to my e-mail account to print something I'd sent to myself (all the working computers were being used), only to discover that that particular computer didn't like to talk to the printer.

Not helpful, sorry

Reminds me of two things:

In Misery where the writer is being forced to used the dilapidated old typewriter to complete the 'masterpiece' for his psychotic fan and the keys slowly die as progresses through the manuscript.

My friend bought a brand new IMac and after a couple of months of use her E key DIED rather dramatically. I still laugh about it from time to time, even though Apple was good enough to replace it post haste.

It took me about 4 days to get used to this one, (http://www.amazon.com/Microsoft-Natural-Ergo-Keyboard-4000/dp/B000A6PPOK/) but I am NOT going back :D

Amazon has a lot of other Microsoft keyboards listed, too

I think I ended up with the Microsoft Digital Media Pro Keyboard (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0002CPBUK/ref=wl_it_dp?ie=UTF8&coliid=I23J5H9SBK3AUZ&colid=2V1WMTK7BD8TX). (The p seems to be working, very begrudgingly, even though the key is still stuck down.)

Ahh, cool!
I went with the ergonomic when I started having some hand problems, and it was recommended to me. It's helped CONSIDERABLY.

Well, I did find the Microsoft Internet Keyboard page (second-party sales only now), and it said that like 50% of customers who hit that page ended up buying the Microsoft Digital WTF, and it does seem kind of similar. Black instead of white/grey, and kind of on crack with all the new shortcut buttons. I just love the shortcut buttons--I love the calculator button on my old one.

I have NEVER ended up using any of the shortcut buttons! I'm old skool touch-typist, and learning new places for new keys is just weird. I use all my alt-key thingies for my shortcuts! Ctrl-escape to bring up the Start menu, alt-tab for program switching, etc.

The next time you need a certain character, you can try the Character Map found at Start Menu > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Character Map.
You can copy and paste or, if a program supports it (such as WordPad and TextPad), you can drag and drop a highlighted character into a document.

Ooh! You could also try the following, if your computer has it:

My computer has something called the On-Screen Keyboard, which you could use for the p and colon by clicking on their corresponding keys on the screen.

In Windows XP, it's accessible through Start Menu > All Programs > Accessories > Accessibility > On-Screen Keyboard. I imagine that other versions of Windows have something similar. I also know that Macs had it in pre-OS X versions (I haven't used any newer Macs recently, so I can't speak for them).

Yes, I use XP and have not seen that before. It's nice to learn something new, thanks for that. :)

Hey, I know your computer's being a little wonky so the next batch of linkspam might not be up for a while, but I did want to ask if you'd be willing to put this up whenever it does: a video on Greensumption and how people can become more environmentally conscious in the things that they do (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ft5SSIfmeKU). I know it's a touchy subject, but I figured I'd just put it out there. Plus, it's pretty funny.

RIP, Cleo's keyboard

I'm always amused by the substitutes people use for malfunctioning keys. Here, the "/" made perfect sense. My "n" key fails from time to time, and I usually use brackets, thus "[]", in its place. I'm not sure if my approach makes sense, though. (The n, by the way, is a horrible key to lose - it's in everything).
