Mmm, watermelon. I think Infamous is on cable later tonight (Capote's somewhere Monday afternoon) and I'm reading the newish issue of Vanity Fair right now, and that's pretty much my plan for the day.

Slate articles on Wikipedia: Why do subjects have to be "notable"? Since the links came up in a discussion of a popular fanfic writer being removed from Wikipedia, I went and searched for myself out of curiosity. Lo and behold, there's no "Cleolinda Jones" entry (nor should there be. No, seriously, don't go over there and start one), but there is a "Movies in Fifteen Minutes" entry. From what I know of the notability guidelines, I think that could be defended--I did a published interview for the book, I remember reviews in at least three separate magazines (uh, do they have to be good reviews...?), and so on. It can be independently verified that someone at some point gave a professional damn, I guess. The article is an "orphan," however, in that little to nothing links back to it, although I don't know what could. I'm still embarrassed that "Crazy Gary Oldman" from two or three of the parodies showed up in Actual Gary Oldman's Wikipedia article, because out of context--he's not crazy! I wasn't saying that! He plays crazy a lot! That's why it was so brilliant to put him in Prisoner of Azkaban, so the people who don't read the books but see the movies would go, "Oh, Harry can handle Voldemort, sure, but I'm putting my money on Crazy Gary Oldman this time," and then you have the big twist and see? That's why it works! And meanwhile, if Gary Oldman ever looks at his own Wikipedia entry (eh, it could happen), he's going to see that and go, "Who is this asshole?" So I would find it extremely embarrassing if people started going through actor and movie entries and stuffing in How They Relate to M15M tidbits. If nothing else, it would piss the Ruling Wikipedia Elite off at me, even if I wasn't the one doing it. I'm just trying to observe here what it's like to be on this knife edge of being "notable" enough to merit an entry but not enough to have any kind of integration with the rest of Wikipedia. Because that's exactly how it is: I have my little corner of Livejournal, but that doesn't mean I have any significance in greater pop culture.

(Which reminds me of a conversation I had at the Deathly Hallows McWane party: I run into someone from Livejournal, we have a nice chat, I go back to my friends. The Lovely Emily turns back to a friend she brought and declares, "She's famous." "You're famous?" he says. "I'm internet famous," I said. "That's totally different. You know that kid on YouTube who was pretending to be a Jedi? I'm not even as 'famous' as that kid. Next year, no one might remember me at all. That's what internet famous is like." Also, "famous" doesn't look like a word anymore.)

The interview with Yates sounds like it was conducted before DH; hopefully now that they've all read it, they're going to be including Scrimgeour. (And a lot of other things!)

I think I liked Infamous better than Capote, actually, though Catherine Keener did a far better job as Harper Lee, IMHO.

(Re: crazy Gary Oldman) People confuse actors with their characters (and vice versa) more often than you'd think. I once spent twenty minutes convincing my dad that just because David Thewlis is gay (or so he said), that does not mean that Lupin is, and there had in fact been something of an outcry when his orientation ws canon-ized. Not to be confused with cannonized And then I looked him up on IMDB, and found out that he isn't gay either. My dad= not the most accurate source of celebrity trivia.

Cleo, I wanted to let you know that I just started college, and whenever I start getting sad/homesick, I read some of your entries I have in my memories. The "Passion of the Limeade" and "Oscar Telecast from the Future" in particular have made me feel better. This is totally a reason as to why you should be "notable".

Aww, bless. I actually have a "Best Of" list over at the Cleoland wiki, because I'm just that lame. How far from home is college? Mine was, like, twenty minutes away, so there wasn't much suffering on my part.

From: [identity profile] scornedsaint.livejournal.com
It's only 40 minutes away, so there shouldn't be that much suffering on my part either, but I somehow managed to catch a stomach bug my first night here, so that made it a bit miserable.

You should totally have a 'Best Of' list. How else will we entertain ourselves?

Awww, that's terrible. Do you have Coke and/or ginger ale at hand? I loved our little dorm quad cafe because they always had a fridge of soda, milk and ginger ale.

Oh yes; I actually stockpiled Coke beore coming here as it is a Pepsi campus.

I think the notability thing in Wikipedia is specious, "notability" is such a subjective measure. You're notable to me ;-) -- hey, that could be a new expression of affection!

From: [identity profile] quasar360.livejournal.com

See, exactly: my problem with notability on Wikipedia is that it's so scattershot--every Pokemon ever invented is "notable," but basic modern sci-fi authors (according to a scrum over at Making Light) are not. Either allow the minutiae, or don't go power-tripping over removal.

(Awww!)

Date: 2007-08-26 01:28 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] particle-person.livejournal.com
Not to mention that it's primarily the minutiae that make Wiki better than a standard encyclopedia, in many ways. What other encyclopedia covers Pokemon?

Mmm, watermelon.

Damn you Cleo!

You know, swear to God, this very day, I was randomly wondering whether you were in Wikipedia. I can't find the "Crazy Gary Oldman" reference in his entry now; did someone take it out?

I have a shirt that reads, "i'm famous on the internet." I enjoy wearing it. A friend bought it for me because she thought I needed to have it. My Internet fame is even less than yours, though.

God, I hope so. Unless I'm remembering incorrectly and it's actually in the HP&POA entry. I just know that someone specifically sent me the link one day, or I'd have never noticed it for myself.

A new edition of Casino Royale, you say? I would also be pissed about the double dipping as well, except for the fact somehow my disc that had the movie on it disappeared (I blame my parents and brother who seem unable to put the DVD discs back into the cases). I have just the extras disc left. I was planning on buying the movie again, but now I shall wait the new edition.

Plus a commentary track? YAY!

Date: 2007-08-26 01:46 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] cleolinda.livejournal.com
Seriously. I think it's just going to be the director and maybe the producers, but still. The sad thing is, the two-disc edition you and I have does the best it can. The Bond Girls thing is fairly entertaining, even though I think it had already aired on TV. But that's a disc full of extras trying to suffice. They just... don't.

From: [identity profile] agentsculder.livejournal.com
Personally, I think commentary tracks should almost be standard with any blockbuster movie when it is getting its DVD release. Studios should be ashamed of themselves if they don't have one. Plenty of people LOVE them and look forward to them. I also think as often as possible the actors should be involved because they always seem to have the best stories! Oh, and commentaries where the people doing the commentary are together in the same room also helps.
