More crazy than usual
Feb. 7th, 2007 03:55 pmIs today Lostnesday again? (I promise no recaps. Mostly because if I promise them, I don’t deliver, and if I don’t promise them, I do.) Speaking of which, there’s a Lost page up at the wiki now. It’s not finished, but it does have a complete list of recap links up.
Meanwhile, no one’s found anything else to clutch theirdiamonds and pearls over since yesterday, but since it is Prince Week, I bring you a download of one of my favorite Prince songs: Thieves in the Temple. Here’s the thing about Prince songs: 98% of the videos are crap. There are a ton of '80s Prince songs that I just didn’t get at all until I finally heard them on CD or the radio when I was much older. “When Doves Cry”? Did not get the big deal at all, because the video was so unendingly lame. And now it’s one of my favorites. So what I’m saying is, if you remember the utterly lamesauce video for “Thieves in the Temple,” wipe that from your mind. Also, true fact: I listened to this a lot while I was writing “Titanic in Fifteen Minutes.” I don’t know why, but it got me through it.
Also, the visitors map from yesterday: so far I've gotten hits from France, Sweden, Germany, Australia, Ireland, Scotland, Austria, Norway, Malaysia, Latvia, somewhere in Africa (I didn't get to see the text description), Greece, Singapore, Colombia and the Netherlands. So far the only continental holdout is Antarctica, but the penguins are probably too busy dancing to get online.
Doctors say superbug can be controlled.

Police want sex charge for boyish con. Aaaaand apparently now they have video of an actual crime.
School accused of covering up assaults. Sadly, the assaulter in question is a completely different, actual 12-year-old boy. Seriously, read this one--the school's handling of the problem is mind-boggling.
NASA to review screening process after attempted astronaut murder. Yup, y'all called it.
Massive hacker attack slows but fails to bring down Internet.
Italy may bar fans from soccer stadiums. Wha?

skyblade: Tom Cruise and Ben Stiller to play grown-up versions of the Hardy Boys. I must concur with Sky's pronouncement that this is "grotesque." Also, Tom Cruise's career is over. (The Hardy Boys? Seriously?)
From
agatha_mandrake: Harry Potter and the Hint of Death. Now, I had heard about J.K. Rowling "vandalizing" a statue in the hotel room where she finished the final Harry Potter book (and after fifteen years of writing the damn things, I can hardly blame her for whatever mental state she was in at the time), but I hadn't heard that the crazy psychofans are trying to read Deep Clues into her choice of statue. Never mind that I'm not sure there even was a "choice," as it's not like she had a wide array of statuary to choose from. Early reports that she wrote on a bust of Hadrian led to "Septimius SEVERUS OMG!" speculation; the correction that it was a bust of Hermes has now set the Harmonians off. Because... you know... Harry/Hermione = Harmione = Harmony = Hermes... somehow. In that vein: Rowling mourns, celebrates Potter's end.

Date: 2007-02-07 10:10 pm (UTC)Truly. The sex-offender was sent out into the hallway, right next to the bathroom door? And the school wants the case dismissed. Did nobody in the school district administration think, "Hmm, this could go badly in the press..."?

Date: 2007-02-07 10:25 pm (UTC)Well, yeah, that would be interesting. I don't recall what kind of measures the Brits had used to combat their own hooligans and drive 'em off the stadiums, but I think they're pretty drastic ones too.
When you speak of the[/your] wiki, do you have a link we can go to and check already, or are you still shifting things around and not ready for 'releasing' it?

Date: 2007-02-07 10:31 pm (UTC)It sounds crazy, but it is exactly what needs to happen. Basically, Italian football has been overrun by hooliganism -- in Italy they call the super-fans "ultras" -- they smuggle flares, firecracker bombs, smoke bombs, and the like into games and hurl them at opposing fans. The teams actually encourage this crap by paying ultras to make banners and suchlike and paying for their trips to away games so the team will have loud supporters. The players encourage it for a variety of reasons, one of which being if they don't, then they're targeted by the ultras. (!)
The stadia aren't set up for security -- most of them don't even have turnstiles -- and most of them are municipally owned (rather than owned by the teams) so the teams have little incentive to try to crack down. The municipal police, for their part, are overextended and can't keep up with the ultras -- half the time their strategy is to fire tear gas into the crowd, which shuts down the game as soon as the players start getting lungfuls of the stuff. Every so often (read: every other week) things get violent and someone gets trampled/stabbed/shot. This time around, it happened to be a cop, so the Italian government is finally getting serious and declaring that the teams will play to empty stadia. (Of course, now the ultras will just crash bars instead...)
Or, in other words, (some) Italian fans are BATSHIT INSANE.

Date: 2007-02-07 10:57 pm (UTC)I know the article mentions this as district's argument:
Still, I couldn't help but to feel angry that they didn't do something to stop the crimes from happening in the first place.
As for the story about Italy proposing to ban its fans* from soccer stadiums, I think the idea makes sense to me. I don't know if it will solve the problem of hooliganism and crowd control in Italian soccer itself (not that it hasn't had it share of problems already), but it would at least try to curb the problem at hand.

Date: 2007-02-07 11:13 pm (UTC)England as well, surely! My London hits can't be showing up elsewhere - that would be tragic.
The wiki is really good and very informative, but as a one-stop shop for all that is Cleolinda, might it be good for it to have links to the works you're talking about? For instance, the Black Ribbon page doesn't link to the webpage where the work is. If you're about to edit this, please ignore a drunk birthday girl. I just think it would be cool to link to pages of your work, so more people can get to see them. The Black Ribbon is such a cool story.
Also, I wish I had New-Flavour Lost or, at least, a decent, non-UK way to get it. What's the verdict, US-siders?
