Miscellaneous thoughts

Mmm, cinnamon toast.

Not having that great a day otherwise--trying to work, but the Death Crud is still lingering and I feel all ropy and logy and sludgy and dried out. But by God, I've sat here in front of an open Word document all morning and all afternoon. Also, it's (checks weather.yahoo.com) 57 degrees right now (oh, that's a LIE. It's 70 degrees in this house if it's five. Hmm. Maybe this is because Sister Girl has the heat on again. GAH), and we all know that these are conditions under which I cannot art.

A pair of scrunchy brown ankle boots that I ordered on a deep-discount after-Christmas sale arrived today, though. I got a brown purse for Christmas and realized that, for some reason, all of my shoes are black (or sneakers). Thus, something in brown. They're a bitch to get on, but plenty comfortable on and easy to get off. Eeeee, scrunchy boots.

I hope no one reading this has narcolepsy, because I have bad news for you. Seriously, if you do, read this, because Teresa Nielsen Hayden didn't find out that Public Citizen had successfully campaigned to have Cylert/pemoline discontinued until she went to refill her prescription: "Xopher and I and god knows how many other people with narcolepsy, ADHD, and other tricksy neurochemical impairments are looking at THE END OF OUR FUNCTIONAL WORKING LIVES." And if you do use Cylert/pemoline, you may want to take the Narcolepsy Network's advice to write letters of complaint regarding the ban.

(God, I wish I had the power to disemvowel comments sometimes.)

Meanwhile, I have developed a sudden lip gloss obsession that has caused me to sit on my wallet hands to prevent myself from buying hundreds of them (woe unto sephora.com!). Particularly since I got a ton for Christmas anyway, and between Burt's Bees and Tutti Dolci, I should be set. (I think those two are actually on sale right now, as a matter of fact.) I really want some Mabel's Laundromat balms, but I think I'm going to dangle those out as a reward for finished work. I said I wanted to finish things, right?

In other news:

Efforts to Find Miners [in mine explosion] Become Desperate. "The men, trapped 260 feet down by an explosion Monday morning in the Sago Mine, were believed to be about 12,000 feet past the opening of the shaft. By midday Tuesday, more than 30 hours after the blast, rescue teams had penetrated 10,200 feet, working their way on foot for fear machinery might cause volatile gases to explode."

TCU Freshman Kicker Found Shot to Death.

Scientists May Have Found Mozart's Skull. "The grave on that spot is adorned by a column and a sad-looking angel." As opposed to the IN YO FACE! angels you so frequently see in cemeteries.

Apparently Angelina Jolie really is pregnant. For those of you who care. I mean, I really like her. But it's not like we won't be beaten to death with the Saga of the Brangelina Spawn by the tabloids in the coming year.

Two Marie Antoinette pics.

Prince Caspian already under way.

How do you feel about adoring fans, Unca Neil? The answer is typical gracious Neil Gaiman, bless him. On that Grateful to Be a Writer note, I'm going to take a stab at another hour of staring at the screen writing before starting dinner.

Lovely linkspam!

I never really ha d asolid reason to think Ralph Nader was a wanker (which really, I hadn't done much research) until now. For fuck's sake...the older I get, the more I think it's better to just Leave Things Alone As Much As Possible, and here's Exhibit A of that argument.

"The grave on that spot is adorned by a column and a sad-looking angel." As opposed to the IN YO FACE! angels you so frequently see in cemeteries.

There are some pretty militant-looking angels in the up front section of the St. Marx cemetery. My B&W photo of the long walkway through the cemetery/park was my holiday greeting card this (just past) season.

It's a bit of a commitment to visit Mozart's probable (mass) grave. St. Marx is south of the Inner Ring of Vienna, more an industrial zone bracketed by council flats for seniors and the A23's on-ramp to head to Slovakia.

You have to walk from the streetcar past every possible car dealership, so you're feeling the pedestrian burn before finding the old cemetery's entrance. (Actually, you just follow the teen girls carrying flowers.) The site is so old that no one's been buried there since the early 1800s. Beethoven isn't even buried there. The Greek Orthodox part at the back is in the best condition; every plot has massive "doors" with ring pulls over the grave, as if some Edgar Allen Poe hero planned to return and commune with his beloved on the anniversary of her death.

I enjoy Vienna's cemeteries too much. They're social centers, so that's okay.

Regarding the miners--I'm here in Huntington, WV, and the local news broke in about ten minutes ago to say that twelve of the thirteen miners have been found alive underground. They found the thirteenth man's body earlier in the evening, but he's not yet been identified. There isn't any word as of yet as to the survivors' conditions, but they've got helicopters preparing to airlift them to the hospital. Apparently, a press conference from the company is forthcoming. When I find a link to all this, I'll send it your way.

Not sure how into weird shit(best term I can give this) you are, but this article grabbed my attention. I mean, how could it not?

Woman marries dolphin. In related news, scientists report record dolphin migrations to Japanistan (TM, uh, you), where "eccentric millionaires", i.e. psychopathic animal abusers, can't force them into a cross-species union.

Re: Teresa Nielsen Hayden thing: forty kinds of bad. Scariness.

BTW, I am behindhand in my lip gloss comments. Cheetos?? That's horrifying. Dig the Literati idea. I may actually buy some.

I just hope that the pregnancy doesn't keep her from much aid work. Probably not. It'll just mean different work. Yikes. It's hard not to let all those nasty comments about her get to me, but I absolutely adore her. It's like listening to someone go after my mother.

ANYWHO thank you for posting. You're not the only one who likes her.

Mmmm....lip gloss. Bath and Body Works' current "Biggest Sale of the Year" or whatever it's called, is going to drain my bank account. (Seriously, I got a $50 gift certificate to the mall, and so far, $35 of it has gone to B&BW.) They do have the Tutti Dolci lip glosses on sale...(Apple Torta, yum!)...I think they are $5 now. They had a ton of them left at my store though, so depending on how many they have left in your area, you might wait and see if they get marked down to $2.50.

Also, found a little time-waster your readership might like:

i know you probably get this A LOT, but i just wanted to say that i bought your book, and i LOVE it. i mean, i still like the original ones, and harry potter looses something without statements such as "fuck all y'all AND this popsicle stand" but i love it nonetheless. you are so awesome!
