It is becoming more and more apparent to me that the pain I was having in my jaws was only partly from tension, as one side has eased up, and the other side still hurts. In a very localized place. Between two molars. Shit.

Boy Trumpeter to Lead NYC Halloween Parade.

The leader of New York's annual Halloween parade will not be a drag queen on roller skates. It will not be a giant caricature of President Bush. It will not be a naked man covered in glitter.

The star will be a little trumpeter from New Orleans — 10-year-old Glenn Hall III, whose house and horn were destroyed by Hurricane Katrina. In New York, he got a new trumpet that he will play Monday in what is billed as the country's biggest public Halloween event. Glenn's role as grand marshal is part of a New Orleans theme at Monday's parade, which takes place in New York's Greenwich Village. The parade's symbol — as it was in 2001 after Sept. 11 — is a phoenix rising from its ashes.

The phoenix will rise from a traditional New Orleans jazz funeral, with displaced Katrina survivors dancing behind a coffin in both grief and joie de vivre.

"The dancing is to raise the spirits, to bring them back. And the music is a cry for the people who died," said New Orleans rapper Allen Porche, 22, who will be dancing in the parade. On his right arm, he has a tattoo that reads "Ninth Ward" — the neighborhood where his family's home was submerged under 27 feet of water.
Voodoo Practitioners Scatter After Katrina.

Speaking of Katrina, I was flipping through the book the other day (for my own nefarious purposes, and happened to come across this part in Independence Day:
PRESIDENT WHITMORE: Please, remain calm. If you feel compelled to evacuate the affected cities, please do so in an orderly fashion.

Pasolini murder mystery persists in Rome, 30 years on.

You know you wish you could review movies like my friend [livejournal.com profile] sweetdaddydavid, mothabitches.

"Disney erotic thriller": Three words I never expected to see in the same sentence.

Aight. Me and the toothache gotta go get ready for class. Don't forget: tomorrow is the beginning of NaNoWriMo, and the book finally comes out in Australia. Also: last day to get your triple-clicks in for the Breast Cancer Site.

Giddy about the shoutout-ery.

By the way, Pasolini is one of my all-time favorite directors. Hugely talented man and I have the vast majority of his films if you're curious to check him out. His "Trilogy of Life" series: The Canterbury Tales, The Decameron, and 1,001 Arabian Nights, are the kind of films that leave you weak after you view them. His film Teorama is now out on DVD in the States, and it has the documentary about his murder in the special features.

Awesome--I could swear we saw at least one Pasolini clip in the foreign film class I took at BSC, but of course I can't remember what it was now. (I think we're all too traumatized by Sweet Movie to remember much else.)

I hope your mouth feels better! Don't overdo Halloween candy, I guess.

And I wanted to let you know that I laughed out loud in math class today when I got to the part in Independence Day where the President starts reciting "I Will Survive". Now everyone thinks I'm crazy. Thank you so much. (Just kidding! I love you!)

Speaking of your book, I finally got it. (and it's wonderful. I almost laughed myself to death, and then spent 3 hours in a Waffle House with some friends of mine, reading aloud LoTR, and there was much giggling, and declaring of need to own the book. yay.)...

Anyway, there's a refrence I'm not getting, and I was wondering if you could explain it?

On Lost, the Dominic Monaghan character is kidnapped, and Jack (Scruffy Doctor) and Kate (fugitive who looks amazingly like Kate Beckinsale) go looking for him, and they eventually pick up the trail after finding bits of tape he's torn off and left behind. It seriously plays like Two Towers homage. The icon is from what I wrote in the recap at the time ("Driveshaft" is the DM character's band).

How excitement!

I went in to Borders on the weekend and asked about it - but they only had the UK import version listed - nothing from Allen & Unwin. I will go into Dymocks this weekend and see if I can track it down and let you know.

I am absolutely hanging to read it......... :o)

OH NOES YOU DIDN'T!

You're doing Nano too? Shit!

Talk about effin' peer pressure...

Okay, so I'm kidding about that. Good luck to thee!! It's already Nov. 1 for me, but this particular life-changing event in my life (http://www.livejournal.com/users/ezaryu/197352.html) will keep me from starting on this any time earlier than tomorrow evening. For shame.

I'm hoping you will be writing your Nano story at least to some extent in a public place? Or are you sneakily doing Movies In Sixteen Minutes and writing your sequal in all of November, utilising the vast length that is movies like Mahabarata, Around the World in 80 days (the Pierce Brosnan, 266 minutes one) and the entire Star Wars saga?

Okay, this is bizarre: Walmart has a war room (http://www.nytimes.com/2005/11/01/business/01walmart.ready.html?ex=1131512400&en=31f8195d42852011&ei=5070). Like the kind they have for political campaigns. And they got themselves some star talent:
including Michael K. Deaver, who was Ronald Reagan's image-meister, and Leslie Dach, one of Bill Clinton's media consultants,
[...]
Jonathan Adashek, director of national delegate strategy for John Kerry, and David White, who helped manage the 1998 re-election of Representative Nancy Johnson, a Connecticut Republican. Terry Nelson, who was the national political director of the 2004 Bush campaign, advises the group.

Who or what are they out to defeat?
The first big challenge...will come Nov. 1 with the premiere of an unflattering documentary. "Wal-Mart: The High Cost of Low Price" was made on a shoestring budget of $1.8 million and will be released in about two dozen theaters.
[...]
Relying on a preview posted online, Wal-Mart investigated the events described in the film and produced a short video contending the film has factual errors. (Mr. Greenwald denies there are errors and says that Wal-Mart has not seen the final cut.) Wal-Mart has also begun to promote a second film, "Why Wal-Mart Works & Why That Makes Some People Crazy," which casts the company in a rosier light.

The Grand Marshal was teh cute but the rest of the parade was, for lack of a better word, creeeeepy. Plenty of random creepiness and not enough Village flair, aside from the crew of AirTranny - they were hysterical...

I don't know, but most of the major chains are carrying it in Britain--the pattern so far has been a few copies in major chains, making it not terribly hard to find if you can get there before they're bought up. I don't know if it'll hold the same in Australia, but they seem to be stocking it in the film section, rather than the humor.
