Thanks so much for all the Chronicles of Narnia goodness. I can;t believe we have to wait until December. It certainly looks beautifully done, which is what I expect from WETA. But yeah, those White Witch minions look just a BIT too much like the orcs for my taste.

I'm glad I'm not the only person who though Lucy was blonde, but I must say, that little girl is adorable! And Susan looks kick ass. I always loved her in the book. You know, now that I've seen that trailer I'm feeling motivated to read the whole series, even though I hear bad stuff happens with Susan.

Date: 2005-05-08 07:49 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] cleolinda.livejournal.com
Actually, Susan only appears in the first two (LWW and Prince Caspian, by my reckoning) books. Nothing "bad" actually happens to Susan, except that... well, I won't spoil it. I would recommend the rest of the series (IN THE CORRECT ORDER OMG ASK ME MORE), particularly since they're quick reads, but just warn you to have patience with Prince Caspian. People tend to like it less than the others, as it's kind of slow and a bit of a repeat.

(I totally thought Lucy was blonde, too. I can't remember what I thought Edmund looked like--I'll have to get out my books and check the illustrations. And the Weta orcs are totally too orcy, except that--well, Lewis and Tolkien were BFF. It almost seems fitting when you think of it that way.)

WETA's doing the work for Narnia, too.

Somewhere there are snarky moms with a sense of irony who will enjoy that for Mother's Day. Coulda been Terms of Endearment.

For her seventieth birthday I took my mom to the opera. Our choices were ... whatever was playing on her birthday within a hundred mile radius, y'know?

We saw Elektra.

My mom: "At least the brother is the killer, and your brother is a rat."

Point of view. It's all in your point of view.

Is it just me or does Aslan tied to the Stone Table look like a Disney World costume?

Also major SPOILER if you didn't read the whole series but...

What do you think happened to Susan after everyone else died and went to the real Narnia? Do you think because she didn't believe she didn't get there? The book upset me that there was no mention of what happened to her in the end.

I seriously think that we were meant to take her as one of the "unbelievers"--Lewis didn't really delve into an actual concept of hell in the Narnia books, so at the very least she seemed doomed to having no afterlife, or a hell conceptualized as "the absence of heaven." Unless, of course, you want to imagine that she grew older and came to Jesus Narnia on her own and had a change of heart.

I just can't BELIEVE that Lewis writes her off with some quick line about how she doesn't like to play Narnia anymore because she's more interested in boys and lipstick. I mean, I guess he's trying not to trash a character people like too badly, so he just doesn't get into it or give her more substantial "sins," but--it just makes him look extremely shallow and vindictive if you think about it too hard. I mean--sending a character to hell, basically, for lipstick?

Teeny weeny nit - Narnia isn't, in the pure technical sense, an allegory. Aslan doesn't equal Jesus, in that he's not Jesus in a lion suit. In our world, Jesus is the incarnation of the Godhood on Earth, and Aslan is the incarnation of the Godhood on Narnia. Lewis would do something similar with his Space trilogy books, where he looked at how the Incarnation would play out on Venus.

They're doing more Serenity prescreenings on the 26th! You can buy tickets right now for fourteen of the twenty cities showing it.

I've got a list of cities as they appear and links to follow here (http://www.livejournal.com/users/backfromspace/231780.html), or you can go to the Browncoats site here (http://browncoats.serenitymovie.com/serenity/?u=twobyfour) and check out the forum post. It's under "Message Boards", then "Movie Production", then "Crushing Disappointment".

The Browncoats site is pretty bogged down from all this, so don't be surprised if it doesn't load quickly. Make sure to join the site if you want to hear about any more prescreenings!

This cap (http://www.narniaweb.com/gallery.asp?img=760&n=12&p=6) actually brought tears to my eyes. The Chronicles are amongst my all-time favorites. Lewis has this way of making all the scenes just glow - great descriptions, and I could always see the scenes and colors exactly. I'm really glad they are doing it in film, though I saw quite a few changes from the canon already. (Dude, I am NEVER the one who spots the changes, but I know these books way too well!) I hope the overall product still ends up being true to the book. And I REALLY hope they get to make the other ones into movies too!

On a tangent, check out this link from the official Disney 'site:http://adisney.go.com/disneypictures/narnia/index.html
Click on 'Movie', then click on 'Production Room'. Then, click on the axes above the cast pictures and scroll down to the bottom. They have pictures of Peter's shield, Lucy's vial, and Susan's bow. I really like the way they made the quiver of arrows the ivory horn.
