I'm on my phone so I can't really manage a link, but I'm hearing that Patrick Swayze has passed away. Go to Yahoo News, I know it's there.

It's one of those weird things: we've known it was coming, but it still was a shock to see the headline. Oh, 2009, what high hopes we had for you.

I'm so so so sad about this. I knew he was sick, but it still doesn't take away any of the sadness that he is gone. My heart goes out to his family, I know how horrible it is to lose someone due to cancer. Especially someone so young.

I can't help but feel like so many important people from my young life are dying. I watch as my parents hear of starlets they loved when they were growing up die of old age and yet here I am, a mere 23, and yet so many starlets from my generation are already passing on. It feels wrong.

I thought to myself that one of the defining characteristics of this generation seems to be that we are inheriting deaths. People our parents grew up with and saw live to ripe old ages are dying, and people that we grew up with--Michael Jackson, Jim Henson--are dying very very young.

Very true. Whether people are taking their own lives on purpose or accidentally, or if they are dying from illness or other, so many people who were poignant parts of our lives (even if it's 'just' entertainment) are passing away. Who will we have around when we have kids of our own?

Sadly, unless someone fantastic steps up to the plate and that right quickly, I don't see anyone in modern American pop culture quite as iconic as some of the people we've lost in the past twenty years. Beyond perhaps Johnny Depp and the current president? I got nothin'. And they'd better not go anywhere. ::tucks them both in a pocket::

Yeah they better not go anywhere. And what's sad is that I totally agree. I've been saying for years... where is our Led Zeppelin? Where's our Beatles? With music, I feel that we don't have any one who will be as iconic as some of the groups from the 60's-80's. No one that has enough talent that when I have teenagers they'll be listening to them and calling themselves 'fans'. We're loosing talent left and right. it's so sad.

The only one that pops into my mind is the Dave Matthews Band. They're filling the void left by the Grateful Dead.

Other than that, possibly, *possibly* Green Day. I'm fond of them only because "Dookie" came out when I was in high school. I know they're huge now, but they leave me kind of meh.

At least we still have U2.

Dave Matthews Band is fantastic, at least in my opinion, but I dunno... I don't think they're as wide spread and famous as Kiss or The Beatles. You know? I don't know if they'd necessarily be known 20 years from now (if they weren't performing in 20 years that is). Same goes for Green Day, although i agree, they kinda leave me meh too.

And good point about U2. They are definitely someone from the past whose still kicking butt.

Oh, I agree. They'll never achieve that high level of fame. However, I'm pretty sure they'll still be listened to 20 years in the future. They've got a loyal fanbase and great songs. "Under the Table and Dreaming" is one of my all-time favorite albums. Sooo many memories attached to it.

I really doubt we'll ever see a band like The Beatles ever again. They WERE the sixties, from the poppy, naive beginning, to the experimental protestations of peace at the end. At the same time, their music is universal and timeless. Absolutely amazing. It'll take something truly special to recreate that.

Oh god, we should. Now that's my early childhood memories right there. I already lost Swayze and Jackson. I do not need any of them added to the list any time soon. We can add anyone who was in Beatlejuice and Edward Scissorhands to that list also. And everyone in Hook. Because that's my childhood too.

From: [identity profile] pickledprose.livejournal.com
OH GAH, PLEASE PLEASE, NO ONE FROM EDWARD SCISSORHANDS! I can't tell you how many times I've watched those three movies. And if Robin Williams, Johnny Depp, or even Burton were to go I would probably have a meltdown. This year certainly has sucked.

I'll have a meltdown also. They're my childhood, teenage years, everything. Watching movies that involve those men is equivalent to cuddling with a childhood blanket for me. They've been an important part of my entertainment-life since I was a kid!

When Ted Kennedy passed away, someone said that Death had to knock him out after he punched it in the balls which is totally the only way that man left. It has to be the truth with Patrick. He fought a good fight.

So far in 2009 we've lost John Hughes, Michael Jackson, Jim Carroll on Friday and now Patrick Swayze. What the hell does this year have against the '80s?

Word on the street is that Kanye West decided to give asshattery commentary that Swayze's death was okay, but MJ's was "better". Link of unknown credibility (http://www.celebjihad.com/celeb-jihad/kanye-west-ruins-patrick-swayzes-last-goodbye).

Oh, man. My friend and I were talking about him *just* last night. In fact, the discussion started with me asking, "Patrick Swayze is still alive, right?" :(

I loved him in Dirty Dancing and Ghost. His SNL skit was actually funny. But my favorite Patrick Swayze moment is the MST3K Christmas carol inspired by him.

I usually pride myself on being reasonably unemotional when it comes to celebrity deaths - it's not like I ever knew them personally - but the ol' Lite Mix was playing on the radio at work this afternoon, and when (I've Had) the Time of My Life came on, I lost my epic shit.
