Just checking in

Miscellany:

I have tickets to Midnight Harry Potter! The Lovely Emily and I have done this for years now--maybe since Prisoner of Azkaban; certainly since Goblet of Fire, I can't remember. (I think GOF was the one where she nearly killed some photo-with-flash-taking kids in the row in front of us. With her knitting needles. And if she was knitting, it was probably November--rather than, say, summer--which would make it Goblet of Fire. Meeeeemorieeeeees...)

Got three tiny packages in the mail, one of them addressed to "Anna Dollerious." You are all very, very strange people, and I love you.

(What was in one of them:)

(Actually, I think Anna's package may have saved my ass, because it'll give me a better way to keep her "onstage," as it were, even though I will have to keep the contents secret for a while. There's only so many balls I can juggle at once, people.)

(Also, and I am telling you just this so you'll keep an eye out for it, next week we will have a Very Important, Long-Awaited Shelfian Event. It won't be tomorrow's entry, but rather, the installment after that one.)

More jaw-clenching. Lovely. Also, with all the drizzliness, I think it may be time to test out that full-spectrum lamp. Except that by the time I decided this, it got sunny again. Go me.

As for my hair--I'm not saying it's completely healed or anything. I mean, hair is not a living thing; you can't really "repair" it. I was thinking more in terms of the beauty equivalent of, say, fabric softener--something to help the tangles and the breakage before it got any worse. So, first thing I did was immediately quit using Pantene products--I know they work for some people, but the sheer number of PANTENE IS THE DEVIL responses I got made me go, "Hey, you know what? This might be the problem." There was some Garnier Fructis shampoo and conditioner in the cabinet, left over from a long while back (it was probably my sister's), so I switched over to that, and there was an immediate improvement. I don't know if I want to stick with that, though--I'm looking into some Burt's Bees stuff, just because they don't use the sulfawhos and the pthalawhats. (Which can also be said of Lush, but I don't have that kind of money right now.) I did pick up their shea butter conditioning treatment at Wal-mart--it also has coconut oil and about six different citrus oils, and I'm telling you, my hair soaked that up so desperately that there almost wasn't anything to rinse out. I'd like to try their moisturizing shampoo (I think it's the raspberry one?), but that's the one no one ever seems to carry. (I know, I know, just order it from the site.) I'm also going to try some straight-up olive oil eventually, except that right now I don't feel like sitting around with Saran Wrap and a towel on my head.

And finally: Ice Cream Deathmatch is still under way!

Yeah, uh, Lush uses the sulfawhos. Even in the conditioners. The solid shampoos tend to be sodium coco sulfate and ammonium lauryl sulfate, as opposed to the straight up sodium lauryl sulfate in the conditioners and sodium laureth sulfate in the shower gels, but Lush isn't quite as straight-up awesome as they could be.

Which is not to say their stuff isn't awesome; you just need to read the ingredients a little closer than most folks think.

I would suggest 'Yes to Carrots' or 'Yes to Cucumbers' line of hair products. You can find them at most CVS/Walgreens/Rite-Aid type places. They are *amazing* and consistently get Allure 'best product' ratings. They have a hair mask that will change your life, no lie.

That is what I use too and I love it! Except I would like to try Yes to Cucumbers but I can't find it where I live so I use Carrots instead.

You can also try ordering Burt's Bees off Amazon. It may even turn out to be cheaper.

Re: your hair, I don't know if this has already been recommended, but the Aloe 80 Organics aloe, lemon & rosemary conditioner does wonders for my hair:

Hey Cleo, I don't have frizzy hair but now that Herbal Essences has stopped making my favorite shampoo (the rose one) I've switched over to Whole Foods' brand name shampoo. Its cheap and it doesn't have all the gunk in it and it makes my very picky hair happy. There's peppermint, which I adore, lavender, and something else. Best of all, it's like $2.99 a bottle.

On the subject of shampoos

I have coarse curly hair and I've struggled for a long time to find soemthing that works to tame the frizz and make my hair look less like a fro and more curl like. I'd advise against the Burt's Bees - not because it isn't a good product, I just find that their most moisturizing formula was still too drying. The best solution to my problem has been alternating between Bed Head's Foxy Curl shampoo and conditioner (the shampoo is sulfate free, and the conditioner is amazingly moisturizing) and Paul Mitchell's Tea Tree Oil Shampoo in the Lavender and Mint formulation (gentle on coloured hair and the scent is really relaxing). Both are kind of expensive, but you can get deals on a 2 pack of litres at Trade Secret or Ulta.

Burt's Bees

Hey Cleo, longtime reader, first time poster. Just wanted to add my vote for the Burt's Bees. I've got long, thick but very fine hair, if that makes sense, and noticed one day I was shedding a LOT. Switched to the Burt's Bees Volumizing shampoo and conditioner and immediate results. I also add about 1/4 honey to 3/4 conditioner for extra conditioning, especially in the winter. Works like magic. The removal of the sulfates and silicones from the product really helped. Just FYI

I generally have to stick with a clarifying shampoo. I tried changing it up a bit before, but whenever I use a different kind, I get these sores on my scalp. Yes, TMI I know...

One of our local theaters are having a marathon of Harry Potter. They're starting on Tuesday morning with SS and ending with the midnight premier of HBP. You pay one price for all of them and you get as much popcorn and soda as you want. I'd totally do it if I didn't have to work that day...

Harry potter-a-thon?

That is awesome!

[identity profile] snapdragon76.livejournal.com 2009-07-14 11:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, it IS awesome! If only I didn't have to work...

Actually, instead of the Burts Bees conditioner, try the Organix Cocunut Milk one. I got mine from a Walgreens down here in Mobile, so there should be one somewhere up there in B'ham. I haven't tried the Organix shampoo, but I absolutely love how the conditioner works. Jasons is also a good brand (I use them for one of my shampoos), but their conditioner is usually a bit thicker than I like. (As in, it's more a "scoop it out with your hands" consistency than "squeeze it out of a bottle". That said, it's good conditioner, just thick.)

Also, just for the record, got really long, straight hair that's really thick. It used to tangle real easy, but since I've started using the uber-moisturizing stuff it's been very easy to manage.

Might I suggest that instead of olive oil you try coconut. Virgin cold pressed, it's a solid at room temperature, and you can find it at health food stores. Ir's also pretty cheap, is shelf stable and lasts forever.
Melt a little bit of that, put in dry hair, wrap your head in a towel, and wait half an hour (or more if you feel like it), then shampoo.

I have dry, fine hair, and I did this a week ago. My hair is still uber shiny, and it didn't weigh it down at all.

Also, it smells like summer. :)

I'm doing this now, and my hair smells AWESOME.

Yay! That's my little embroidery. *beams* At one point when I was working on it, the thought of how weird it was to be stitching a blog entry by Kanye West did pop into my mind - but more often I wondered whether I was embroidering the right Kanye-ism. His blog is just a smorgasbord of ridiculous, and I love it. Other examples: "ITS A LONG ROAD TO NOT BEING A DOUCHE BUT IM UP FOR IT" and "AS LONG AS I ACT LIKE A BITCH THEY WILL TREAT ME LIKE ONE"

Honestly, there are a few people I could send that last one to...

haircare

Get thee to a Sally Beauty Supply and pick up some Ion Repair Solutions Hair Reconstructor or Ion Effective Care Intensive Therapy, especially if you color your hair. They've worked wonders for me, and it only takes a little bit to make a lot of difference.
If you can afford a bit of a splurge ($10 bucks a bottle,) I recommend the David Babaii for WildAid Hydrating Shampoo- it's sulfate, paraben and petroleum free, lathers well and smells divine. If you're on a serious budget, Trader Joe's makes damn good sulfate free shampoos and they're dead cheap- under 3 bucks a bottle!

[identity profile] all-ephemera.livejournal.com 2009-07-10 04:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Cheaper than Lush (and... better, really, because Lush is insanely overpriced for what they make) you can also try Kiss My Face's shampoos and conditioners. No sufahwahhs or pthalwhatsits; lovely smell; not expensive at all. (I think I pay $6ea for normal sized bottles.)

As an aside, Target always has a great selection of Burts Bees, but not in their shampoo section. It's near cosmetics & around all their other Organic stuff.

[identity profile] remys-haven.livejournal.com 2009-09-16 07:49 am (UTC)(link)
They carry the whole burt's bees line at Target. :)
