Okay, can someone in the Homewood area (nearish to Samford University) tell me what the hell was going on today? There was loud music all afternoon/evening a couple of streets over from me, and then at 10 pm, just now, there was ten minutes of giant, downtown Birmingham, Fourth of July-quality fireworks. Seriously, I watched them from my kitchen window, the big one that's in all the pictures I take--they couldn't have been more than a street or two away. Shelby nearly keeled over, she was so scared--and right after, when Mom took her outside one last time before bed, she (Mom) reported hearing police sirens and fire trucks on the way.

"I bet the fireworks scared someone so bad they had a heart attack," she said indignantly. "Why else would there be fire trucks?"

"Uh, because the fireworks STARTED A FIRE?"

"... Whatever."

ETA: Well, this explains both the music and the fireworks.

The Stadium Fest family-oriented outreach event presented by Scott Dawson Evangelistic Association will be held today from noon to 9:30 p.m. in Seibert Stadium at Samford University.

Well, they reached my dog. And nearly gave her a coronary. I do wonder what the police and fire trucks were for though now. There really is a no-noise-after-10-pm ordinance, and it looks like their 9:20 fireworks show started really late, so... I hope my neighbors called the cops on Samford. I would never stop laughing.

Fireworks stash explosion is my bet.

But I watched them, and they were spaced out like a planned fireworks program, complete with grand finale. And they ran from exactly 10:00 to 10:10.

a friend of mine was once sideswiped by an ambulance that was on its way to pick up somebody who got burned while setting off 4th of july fireworks. she was fine, her car was totalled. the driver of the ambulance stopped to make sure she was ok, then left her and kept going to the burned guy. he did, however, call for backup.

random response!

OMG, what happened? I was told in Driver's Ed that if you get hit by a cop, fire truck or ambulance it's YOUR fault because you didn't get out of their way fast enough.

LOL. You're mom's idea would never have crossed my mind. I suppose I should start considering that the sirens I often hear after lightning strikes may be ambulances for whoever the lighting hit, instead of the fire trucks for whatever it hit, like I usually assume.

I live in the desert where anyone not official using fireworks is illegal, so the thought that sirens wouldn't be going to arrest someone or put out a fire is amazing to me.

Those Kids I Hate are always setting off fireworks on minor holidays, but they're, like--you know, noisemaker type stuff, things you hear but that I've never actually seen. So I'm guessing those are legal? I really don't know anything about fireworks laws around here, except that I've never seen a show that big anywhere 1) not on July 4th and 2) so close to my house.

We don't have fireworks in our town anymore because two years ago a bunch went off near the crowd and a whole bunch of kids and parents had to go to the hospital burn unit. We have laser light shows now, because you know, they can't blind you or anything.

Okay, I have to stop you right there. Firstly, let me say that you suck, that song sucks, it has always sucked, and all parodies of it will forever suck.

Worse yet, the cursed thing gets stuck in my head because it is catchy and involves US history, with which I am more than passingly familiar so I wish everyone would just cut it out right now and forget it ever existed...so that I could. Someday.

Ugh, some fireworks just went off at my college, too. Springfest, or something. Freaked me out, too. I really hate fireworks--I have no clue why, but whenever I hear them, I have pretty much the same reaction your dog has. The fourth of July has never been a fun day for me. :/

Aw, poor puppy. I hope she's recovered. Our dog has much the same reaction to fireworks.

I also hope it was a noise ordinance thing that brought the cops over. That would be hilarious. And also would probably mean that there was nothing more serious going on there.

Here in the UK our big fireworky celebration is the 5th of November, but it's quite common for official displays to take place on the Saturday closest.

On the Isle of Man, a few years ago they brought in laws so that you can only set off fireworks at certain times of year. The period around Bonfire Night extends to the 7th of November. So last year, with the 5th falling on a Wednesday, they found themselves in a situation where displays taking place on the Saturday after (which was just as close as the Saturday before) were illegal. Oops.

(The Isle of Man is not in the UK except when it suits them. Blowing shit up? Sure, we love the UK! Wait, what, you want us to pay taxes? Ahahahano, why would we do that, we're not in the UK.)
