cleolinda: (how I roll)

cleolinda Watching "The Invasion" on cable. Had forgotten how ridiculous the Nicole Kidman/Daniel Craig non-romance is.

cleolinda "You're my best friend, I can't risk that." NO YOU MORON! HE'S HOT ANGSTY PEDIATRICIAN MAN! ARE YOU BLIND!

cleolinda And I'm still not sure how she teleported from a residential area to downtown wherever.

cleolinda The funniest part to me is the ending, but I probably shouldn't discuss that on open Twitter.

cleolinda Okay, I've posted a comment on my original review of "The Invasion" to discuss the ending: http://bit.ly/10kjnO

cleolinda "You can EASILY go for a week without any sleep!" OH WHATEVER. I pulled sleepless paper-writing weekends in college and it was NOT easy.

cleolinda Apparently if you go long enough without REM sleep, you go into psychosis. I can totally, totally believe it,

cleolinda because I was up working on papers for like 60 hours and was just gibbering by the end of it. Really, really counterproductive.

cleolinda I would get blocked and push it until the last moment. Yeah... bad idea. I worked really well under pressure until I was 20

cleolinda and then it was just over, I couldn't pull it out in the last two hours anymore. And I learned this the hard way, woe.

cleolinda I think a lot of my blocks really tend(ed) to be about anxiety and unrealistic expectation, particularly in college.

cleolinda Yeah, I basically had a nervous breakdown because I suddenly couldn't work the way I had for years.

cleolinda It was like I lost my teenage metabolism overnight or something.

cleolinda Ah, Nicole Kidman stumbling around 7-11s chugging Mountain Dew. Just like senior year.

cleolinda And in closing, re: "The Invasion": My mother watched the first 1/2 hr or so, and you know her issues with Blond James Bond.

cleolinda She got to the "You're my best friend" scene, stares for a moment, and declares, "She's an idiot." ~The end.~

cleolinda ("That totally looks like his kid, too.")

More than once, Nicole shoots a gun, then throws it down. You wouldn't want to keep a gun when alien/zombies are chasing you?

I KNOW! Maybe they were trying to show how unwilling she was to kill people, given that several people are unable to be cured because she totally blew them away?

I never thought I'd say this about any movie, ever, but I think I'd take the 90's version with Gabrielle Anwar over this one. I think the gory, B-movie route works better for the story. My fave is still the Donald Sutherland version.

I still have to get around to seeing that film, but its very existence bothers me. The original Invasion of the Body Snatchers was excellent, the 1970s remake with Donald Sutherland was even better. Of course, the 1990s remake, just called Body Snatchers was terrible, but I bet it was better than this.

And this one? Oh God, why even remake Invasion of the Body Snatchers if the alien menace is no longer emotionless copies of people that hatch out of giant seed pods? It's now a virus? Are you kidding me?

Oh, and the humans win this time? Fuck that!

The "invasion" movies, as a class, are my favourites... heck I did an entire independent study on them for one semester in university. But yeah, that most recent one just doesn't work as well as I would have liked... I do rather miss when it was allowable for the aliens to win.

Movies I would include in the grouping:
Invasion of the Body Snatchers (50s and 70s)
Body Snatchers (90s)
Invasion (00s) (hey, I see what you did there...)
The Faculty
Puppet Masters
...

missing any?

My main problem with this movie was that Nicole Kidman appeared to be made entirely of ice throughout. I just can't get attached to any of her characters, regardless of the strength (or lack thereof) of the story or her performance. : /

I actually thought she did a fairly good job of acting emotional--I could never figure out how the aliens didn't catch on that she was faking, because sometimes she wasn't faking it too well. At the same time, she does have a very cool, reserved, sometimes fragile persona, and I think it's one of the reasons her movies don't do too well financially--people can't get attached to her. She's a great style icon, and I still love her performance in "To Die For," but... I can see how her performance in "The Invasion" could be technically good, but she just can't get people to warm to her.

Apparently Daniel Craig has a huge thing for her, though--I think he jokingly said so in some interview, either for this or The Golden Compass--and it shows, because they did have great chemistry.

I loved Kidman in To Die For, Portrait of a Lady and The Others. But she's gotten paler, thinner and more remote as time goes on and I really don't enjoy watching her anymore. Too bad because I do think she has serious acting chops.

I'd watch Daniel Craig file his taxes, but that's a whole 'nother thing...

'how ridiculous the Nicole Kidman/Daniel Craig non-romance is.' ....How were they in The Golden Compass? Oh, wait....they don't meet in the first one, do they?
Y'know I never got to watch 'The Invasion' (of the body snatchers remake). Kinda glad I didn't ;)

Technically they were, but the studio cut the end off, intending to use it at the beginning of "The Subtle Knife."

I am too, but you know, I really liked it. I'm not saying it's a perfect movie, but the casting was fantastic.

I own the movie, simply because of the casting :)
I have much respect for you, Cleo, so I will now watch it because of you. (I think my favorite casting choice was Serafina-what was yours?)

I loved all the casting, but Sam Elliott was just so perfect it hurt. Like, walked-out-of-the-book perfect. I love Eva Green anyway, though, so I was happy when she got cast for Serafina. And apparently Philip Pullman actually had Nicole Kidman in mind when he wrote Mrs. Coulter (despite the brunette description)?

Heh, yeah, Sam Elliot looks the part!
I can't remember any (other) movies with Eva in them...hmmm...
Woah, really? That's a suprise. Maybe he imagined her with a wig or dye job or something? But y'know....I can totally see it now. She really does seem like Mrs. Coulter to me. :)

I really think Swiss men just went - girls use tampons...girls like twilight, hey let's scar them forever. And it worked.

I showed my friends the picture but didn't tell them what it was. They both thought the guy had green candy canes for teeth.

SO you have definitely spoken the gospel truth here. I turned 20 a few months ago and can I just say that my abiity to pull all-nighters at college have completely gone out the window? I thought it was just college but then I remembered that I was still able to do some all-nighters last year. CRAZY. And thank you for making me feel like I wasn't going completely crazy
