Several things

1) Well then. Yesterday's entry certainly set my inbox on fire.

2) Speaking of inboxes, if you've direct-messaged me here on LJ recently and I didn't reply, you will probably want to check and make sure that you don't have the privacy option enabled, which means that I can't send you a message back.

3) If you were interested in Melissa's Harry, A History signing at NYCC, I double-checked, and you will be able buy the book while you're there.

4) I was reading "The Great God Pan" last night, and then I reread Stephen King's story "N.," and he mentions in the afterword/notes that most horror writers (of which I consider myself one, to some extent) end up taking on the theme of the world being "thin" in places, places thin enough to glimpse unspeakable horrors. After a little thought, I realized that this idea doesn't actually appeal to me all that much, and that I tend to think of reality as a very thick place, actually--so thick and gnarled and crannied, like an old house or a hollow tree, that you never quite know what might be lurking in the corners. But I still think of it all as being on the same plane, just full of... nooks.

5) I had a really weird dream this morning that involved people having a party invading spilling into my backyard, and then a frontal assault from a bunch of schoolchildren in the front yard who all had to go to the bathroom and their teacher-nuns (long grey dresses. I don't know) let them into my house (which was suddenly a mansion) without asking me, and I was really, REALLY concerned that they were going to steal all my jewelry. Apparently I have boundary issues at this time.

6) Today's Snack Deathmatch: honey roasted peanuts vs. salted cashews. I'm more of an almond/hazelnut girl myself, but my stepfather is definitely a cashew man.

NYT review: "There are many scenes and images in 'Coraline' that are likely to scare children. This is not a warning but rather a recommendation, since the cultivation of fright can be one of the great pleasures of youthful moviegoing. As long as it doesn’t go too far toward violence or mortal dread, a film that elicits a tingle of unease or a tremor of spookiness can be a tonic to sensibilities dulled by wholesome, anodyne, school-approved entertainments." Aw! And an A in Entertainment Weekly: "Kids are unself-conscious geniuses at inventing alternative realities, effortlessly creative universes in which their wishes and fears find full expression. And, of course, adults regularly visit imaginary worlds too, often with psychotherapists as travel agents. Add to those interested parties the millions who love the fantasy-rich literature of Neil Gaiman and those who adore the dreamscape artistry of Nightmare Before Christmas filmmaker Henry Selick, and you have the audience for Coraline: everybody. This thrilling stop-motion animated adventure is a high point in Selick's career of creating handcrafted wonderlands of beauty blended with deep, disconcerting creepiness."

Ooh, I can't wait for Coraline! But I'm so scared that it might not be playing in my town. *bites fingernails* If it doesn't come here I will be so disappointed, and so will my brand new, just arrived today, oh-so-cute Coraline doll. (BTW, if she starts talking to me and my other dolls/figures/etc. and I feel the need to document these conversations, I will totally blame you.)

Also, I want one of those Christian Bale shirts.

Yay for Carey Mulligan getting more work! Not that she's had any dry spells lately, but still. Good to maybe have the opportunity again sometime!

I know you have inbox of 'splodo, but I wanted to share a conversation I had with my fiance over the Stephen-King-Comments-On-Twilight thing. Because I thought you would appreciate:

Him: Argh! See, I can't verify that [Twilight]'s that bad until I read it, but I don't want to touch it!
Me: Well, I can point you to someone on my friends list who did recaps of it...
Him: Y'know, it'd be great if Cleolinda did something like that.
Me: ...That's whose recaps I'll be pointing you at.
Him: Ah, cool.

This is someone who barely updates his own LJ, doesn't read my friends list and really gives nary a shit about People On The Internet. Evidently he paid more attention to the copy of M15M I threw at his head than I realised. So ... you got through to him! Go you!

I was wondering if you might help me. I'd love to have this userpic be a "Heroine Addict" userpic. I'm not an icon-making type genius : O) Might you be able to help me?

I just loved the Stephen Colbert and Steve Martin video.

Sadly, Colbert and Martin didn't do the JUSTICE to it. He didn't used the F*word that much.
The remix song is really well done though.

1. You know, I kind of feel the same way about horror. While I'm a fan of many, many authors that use the thin-world logic, to me the world we live in is already so full of hidden things, wonders and terrors that we come across unexpectedly, there must hardly be any space for otherworldly horrors to cram themselves in.

2. Hell yeah, Heather Nova.

Speaking of weird dreams, I had a great one the other night. I must preface it though by saying that a couple months ago I was introduced to the Korean band Big Bang and have fallen in love with them. Over the last week or so I've been watching a bunch of videos on youtube of interviews they've done that have been subtitled. So the other night, I had a dream which included not only Big Bang, but a subtitled Big Bang. Also, Edward Cullen was in it being very creepy. I feel I must share.

The whole premise of the dream is that Big Bang is being held hostage in this house on the second floor. BUT while that's going on, down in the basement, which is completely underwater, Edward is torturing a pregnant girl (not Bella, and apparently she had no problem breathing underwater) with a shark. He has her chained up crucifixion style and this very hungry shark is trying to swim up to her and eat her, but Edward has a chain around the shark's neck (do sharks actually have necks?) and it's too short for the thing to get to the girl. So, everytime it lunges at her to bite her head off, it chomps down on nothing but water about an inch from her face. And Edward was just leaning against the wall watching all this with a creepy smile. Meanwhile, upstairs, Big Bang is sneaking down the stairs all stealthy to get to the door and DaeSung pulls a taser out of his pocket all serious-face like he's going to take on anyone who gets in his way of the door and a caption pops up with this chime sound effect saying, "DaeSung is prepared to use his taser and self-defense skills!" and TOP shoots the camera a look that's both surprised and impressed and another caption pops up saying, "TOP is impressed with DaeSung's taser!" And I woke up just as they were reaching the door.

Can I just say that I think it's hilarious that I'm dreaming with subtitles and captions? And that I also think it's kind of awesome? Though I could have done without the Edward thing...maybe that part would have been better if it also had captions.

'Beezus and Ramona': Disney star Selena Gomez tapped for adaptation of Beverly Cleary's classic....

Must the Disney channel teen "actors" and Hot Topix conspire to ruin everything good I remember from my childhood? Is Zac Efron going to play a smurf soon in some shitty movie? Is Miley Cyrus slated to play a Berenstain Bear or Ameila Bedelia or an "updated cool version" of Margaret Simon from "Are you there God, it's me Margaret"?

Christian Bale is legendary. He's a walking disaster. And officially my favourite celebrity ever. I got a signed photo of him with film cells from the Dark Knight for my birthday, they must have tripled in value by now. I could listen to him scream for hours. And it's not as erotic as it sounds.

[identity profile] sapphires13.livejournal.com 2009-02-07 03:52 am (UTC)(link)
Well, the world being thin in places works better in the King universe, since it's so multilayered, with different alternate realities and versions of different worlds. The thin places are referred to a lot within his works as being the thin places between worlds, where people and things can cross over. Apparently all of Maine is pretty thin, with Derry being the thinnest of all.

I kinda like the thick idea better. It's more on line with how I see things myself. Or maybe it's just because of the recurring dream I have of being in a moderately familiar house or building, but finding a bunch of rooms I never knew were there.

[identity profile] cleolinda.livejournal.com 2009-02-07 05:22 am (UTC)(link)
Well, I mention it because he says that "N." was very inspired by Machen, and that "The Great God Pan" was hugely influential for him in general, and the idea of places being "thin" is there, too. I think it works for King because, like you say, that's how his in-book cosmos is set up. But in terms of it being a trope that a lot of writers end up working with... it doesn't really appeal to me.
