Happy Chrismukkanzaawalidan!
Dec. 25th, 2008 10:34 amRemember how tired I was? Yeah, I don't think I slept at all. If I did drop off, I don't remember it. I'm probably going to pass out in three or four hours, but I've got to get through the extended family lunch first. It's small and we're close, though, so it's not a huge ordeal or anything.
So, to repeat the question from Thanksgiving--if you are celebrating holiday(s) today, what foods are you nomming? And if presents were involved, what did you get that you really liked? Or, for that matter, what did you give that you really liked? I'm very pleased with the present I've put together for my cousin, for example (I can't say what yet, because she might actually read this before she gets here). As for me, I got that star locket (in gold tone) and the bracelet that I had really wanted from Sweet Romance. Oh, and Beedle the Bard! It's funny, I wasn't even interested in that until people started talking about it and I realized there was more to it than just a couple of fairy tales. (I mean, if nothing else, there's an epic burn.) So that's probably what I'll be doing today after I emerge from a short coma: reading.
I also got something else, probably my favorite present of all, that we will speak of later. (No, it is not male. Speaking of which--whom?--we haven't seen Purple Arwen since he arrived. No one is terribly surprised.)
Meanwhile, I wish you booze and joy. I just really wish I had some pomegranate juice now.

Date: 2008-12-25 04:43 pm (UTC)For Christmas dinner, it's roast beef with mushrooms and mashed potatoes and afterwards plum pudding and chocolate dipped strawberries. Hell yes. I'm honestly just glad I have a day off and a chance to eat a meal at home.
Merry Christmas,

Date: 2008-12-25 04:43 pm (UTC)Ok, so that's an exaggeration. Maybe more like it's giving me a bit of a twinge. But still, very curious as to what it could be.
My favorite gift was one of the few non-money gifts I got, from my older sister. She got me the 21 Nights (http://www.borders.com/online/store/TitleDetail?sku=1416554440) book about that month of concerts Prince did in London. It's very very pretty to browse, as any good coffee table book should be, and the live CD it comes with is equally awesome. My sister is one of the few people who knows how much I dig Prince (and only occasionally teases me over it), so I'm really pleased.

Date: 2008-12-25 04:49 pm (UTC)I got a lot of really cool stuff. The best was a copy of Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion: Game of the Year Edition for my computer - I'm not used to having a laptop with enough space to play a truly epic game like that, and it's great. :D
Also, though it hasn't arrived yet, my brother bought me a Tibetan skull bracelet that is fantastic and actually something I've been wanting to get for quite some time. :3
I got my mum and aunt some CDs (Styx and Kansas) and some books (an Anne Rice and Catch Me If You Can - they like true crime) and I'm beyond happy that they liked them. :D

Date: 2008-12-25 04:49 pm (UTC)I also got a "tricks for Adobe CS4" book, which is kinda... um, not so good because I don't have CS4.

Date: 2008-12-25 04:56 pm (UTC)We're having HAM. And German potato salad, because Mom hates scalloped potatoes and sister hates mashed and baked potatoes. I don't get them. I suggested latkes, since Mom's Jewish and there's something hilarious to me about latkes with ham.
Merry Christmas! I hope it is happy and bright. <3

Date: 2008-12-25 04:57 pm (UTC)my favorite gift, gotta be the macbook, although my mom and i banded together to get my dad an ipod touch, and the childish joy on his face while he played with it was almost better than being able to have my OWN computer. almost.

Date: 2008-12-25 04:59 pm (UTC)My favorite gift is the first three seasons of Supernatural on DVD, and I'm now watching the Christmas episodes. (There's ritual sacrifices and drunk Santas involved. I love my show.)
My best gift given, I think, is a parody-biography of Millard Fillmore that I gave to my stepfather. He likes history, he likes to read, and it was a highly recommended book. I think it's a win.

Date: 2008-12-25 05:05 pm (UTC)Dinner will be lovely, if the fact I got no sleep and then when I was about to get some the dog decided to dance the Can Can on my gut won't make me go postal. I always overdo it for Christmas dinner, and pick a theme. This year's theme is French:
Pickles and Olives
Asparagus Salad with Celery Leaves, Quail Eggs, and Tarragon Vinaigrette
Escargots à la Bourguignonne
Artisan Bread
Sauteed Parsnips and Carrots with Honey and Rosemary
Crusty Potato Cake
Roast Goose with Chestnuts, Prunes and Armagnac
Cranberry Sauce with Port and Dried Figs
Eggnog Crème Brûlée
Pumpkin Pie
If it all turns out, it will be Epic.

Date: 2008-12-25 05:14 pm (UTC)I got a couple of Nancy Drew computer games (love!), the first two Twilight books (from my brother and sister-in-law to be, the latter of which I have been subjecting my OMGWTF rants of a Twilight nature and who went to see the movie with me). The Twilight package's tag read 'for the lulz'. :-D I also got the Dresden Files comic book, which I was sure no one would be able to find. I got my brother the Aliens Quadrilogy, which I'm quite proud of, since he was talking about how Aliens was his favourite movie and he didn't have it on DVD. So, I had a lovely time and now it's over and that's good too. :-)

Date: 2008-12-25 05:17 pm (UTC)Mmmmmleather.
I will always have a soft spot for those peanut butter cookies with the Hershey's kisses on them. So good, oh lord. As far as gifts I gave, pretty excited to give the boyfriend a nice sweater that he damn well needs and a Chuck Norris DVD to make up for the sweater.

Date: 2008-12-25 05:18 pm (UTC)I got a great necklace from Urban Outfitters--it has a monocle on it. I was supposed to get Guitar Hero but my brother-in-law got it for the Playstation instead of the Wii, which he realized right when I opened it. My nephews are totally doing that kid thing of fixating on one present. The three year-old got a brand new trike but has not even acknowledged it in the face of the Castle Ball Game (?)

Date: 2008-12-25 05:18 pm (UTC)Yay for Beedle the Bard! After seeing it in Barnes and Noble recently I decided I'd be pretty happy to get it for Christmas and then my friend surprised me with it for my birthday. I peeked at the intro this morning since I just finished a book last night and need something new. I can't wait to read the rest later, I heard the commentary from Dumbledore is supposed to be good.
My siblings are pretty tight on money this year so we decided not to exchange gifts but I wanted to do something for them so I baked chocolate chip cookies for my brother and brother-in-law and gluten free sugar cookies with peanut butter chips for my sister who has celiacs and then put them in Christmas themed Chinese take out boxes and added a few candies. Not as great at the presents we usually do but I was pretty pleased with how they turned out :)
Hope you guys have a nice family lunch!

Date: 2008-12-25 05:34 pm (UTC)I just got dad a book on art from a series he liked and I got mom a decorative santa. I was proud of that one since I got it months ago at a Ren Faire because it looked like something she'd really like.
I'm not a complete sad sack and I'm going over to a friend's later to eat Chinese food (for the irony), watch Wall-E and try not to cry. Right now I am nomming on butterscotch crunchies or haystacks or whatever you call them. It's melted butterscotch and peanut butter mixed with marshmallows and chow mein. SO GOOD.
MERRY CHRISTMAS!

Date: 2008-12-25 05:36 pm (UTC)My fave gift for this year sounds absurd, but it's the ceiling fan from my brother. I bought my first home in September, and really really wanted this so I put it on my list. My mother once again gave me a bunch of random organizational things from QVC. We need to take that station away from her, as it tends to prompt the sorts of gifts that make my friends say "Has you mom ever MET you?"

Date: 2008-12-25 05:41 pm (UTC)We are Scandinavian-Minnesotan, so Christmas dinner is Swedish meatballs, potatoes and beans, with silte (a Swedish headcheese) and gjetost (BEST CHEESE EVER) and lefse.

Date: 2008-12-25 05:45 pm (UTC)My favorite gift that I gave as a 12" Martha (companion, series three) action figure for a friend who loves Martha. I also got her a 5 1/2" bad guy action figure for Giantess Martha to kick around. I hope she likes it as much as I did.

Date: 2008-12-25 05:46 pm (UTC)So: judias rojas, cordero y acelgas. That is, red beans (...which I think are kidney beans?) cooked with salt pork, chorizo (Spanish chorizo) and some onions and garlic, lamb and Swiss chard. I probably can't convince the family to eat chard the Spanish way, which is to cut off the leafy part and bread and fry the stalks, but I suppose it's worth a try...
Then there's some tasty cheese, some more chorizo, pimientos al piquillo and white asparagus for before, and I think someone's bringing dessert. I, for one, am deeply excited!
